For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by Peter Campbell,

Trying to eliminate carburetion gremlins in an old DT400E: I remember reading a few months ago about a service bulletin which detailed changes in the suggested main jets, pilot jets etc for this bike. Can't seem to find that info anymore. Anyone have any info on this bulletin?

  3. Folks, Anyone out there run across dual front disc brakes fitted to the DOHC XS400s? I have run across two PICs of such setups. One of a GREY bike and one of a RED bike. These appear very similar to the items on the Yamaha XJ650L Turbo model, but use polished lower forks instead of the black paint finish on the turbo. I have a DOHC XS250, which is due for a fork restoration - rechrome and new seals, so may be time to consider a possible upgrade. The PICs are interesting, as they appear to be production or pre-production items. They have slotted rotors, which I have not seen on production bikes of this era, and many did use the same disc. They also have seat straps, w…

Had another heat seize last night. Temps around 16*C, had gone about 12 miles, consistently around 4000 rpm. Going up a slight long incline, started to hear what sounded like the reeds flapping. When I realized what it was, I closed the throttle, clutched in and it immediately quit. After some testy moments with a friendly pit bull, I pushed it into a local power station lot, and after about 5 minutes gave the kicker a try. Was happy it turned over, so key on, kick again and it started normally. Rode gently the last 2 miles back home. I have already upgraded to bigger jets in both the main and pilot jets. I had the needle dropped all the way down but before the…

Hi, I'm currently in the process of dis-mantleing a DT175 and someone has lost the key to the steering lock. Is there a way to take the steering lock out without butchering the cover? Thanks

  6. Started by Steve Barnhart,

Hi all, I've been slowly getting a '74 dt125 into running condition, but I'm having some problems with it now at high speeds. The bike seems to cut out after I've ridden it for about 5 minutes and when I've gotten it up to around 55mph. I'm guessing it may be heat related but I've noticed two things: Any draw on the electrical system seems to stall the motor once it's hot (headlight, brake light, turn signal). The bike runs fine with lights when it is cool. The clutch doesn't seem to disengage when the bike is hot, even when I squeeze the clutch handle all the way. I don't know if the clutch problem is related and I'll try adjusting it tonight, but I had it ad…

  10. Folks, I preffered to start another topic rather than put everything in one post, so that those topics stay clearer. To the point. I had my carbs being cleaned and regulated during March this year, as I had really problems getting the bike to start up last year. After I got the bike I was nicely surpised by it's response, nice power, and somehow - more speed achievable - COOOOOOL! :D:D:D:D Yep - but - I also noticed increased fuel consumption (fine with that though) and recently I also some kind of fuel leakage which seems like..hmm..overflowing of the carburator. I did some reading about how to set up float levels, but wanted to get a second opinion before…

  11. I got my first bike, it is an '81 xs250. It needs some TLC and I have only ridden it to Bondi and back a couple of times but I am really enjoying it already. I plan on fixing it up while it is still on the road and I am on a really tight budget so I guess the build is going to take some time. I have replaced the throttle cable, rubber inlets and mildly cleaned the carbies and now it starts and runs kind of OK but I need some help with some problems. 1. left hand spark plug fouls after about 1 minute of running - black and powdery. As the left hand carby leaks fuel if I leave it on the side stand, could this be a carby problem and any suggestions on how to fix it…

Hello everybody! This is my first post and I'm hoping that I will find some good advice. To start, I'd like to thank everybody in advance who gives me any information. I am by no means very knowledgeable when it comes to bikes... I'm pretty green. But I do have SOME mechanical knowledge, as well as a well equiped garage at my disposal. Ok, so here's the problem: I bought a 1981 Yamaha XS400 Special last summer. It worked without any problems for 4 months last summer and for the majority of this summer as well, except recently there has definitely been somthing wrong with it. When idling, it will occasionally "die" for about half a second. The engine will lose most p…

Hi all,I picked up my 1978 xs250 yesterday and went out to give it a run.I noticed at the bike was surging a bit.I then opened it up to go over a large bridge and got to about 65mph when it started to die like fuel starvation.I came to a stop and it idled but would not respond to the throttle, however after leaving to idle for a few minutes I was able to carry on my merry way. With the bike still surging a bit I decided to chance overtaking a slow car and as I was alongside it died like fuel starvation again and cut out.It would not restart but after a while it did but would not rev up and now it stalls.I suspect carbs or air leak. The bike had a full carb clean ,new filters…

  14. Hello, everyone I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now. Kinda wish I found it before I got the bike but oh well. So, I've got a 1982 Yamaha xs400 it's gonna be my first bike. I say gonna because 1 I haven't taken the course yet and 2. It needs a little work to be street legal and road ready. I got the bike first because it was a really sweet deal old guy who works on motorcycles/atvs/ gocarts drives it to town and his mailbox (he's in the country) but wife says it's gotta go so he sold it to me cheap (to stop her nagging lol). Ok enough back ground on to the bike it's got a slight leak on what i believe is the rubber air cleaner joint (thats what the web sa…

I'm currently restoring a 1975 DT175 imported from the USA, I've just bought an ignition barrel that should have fitted but the mounting points on my top yoke are too far apart. I just came across this 76 YZ125C. It doesn't run but is 90% complete. No compression. It has been sitting about 25yrs. Very good shape for the year. Could someone give me an idea what it's worth in the current condition ? Should I repair it or part it out ? I can send pics. Can't seem to get pics to load here. Thanks for any info you can give me. Terry

Hi guys, I'm trying to find out the correct year model of my dt 125 so i can buy the right parts to get her going again, the engine and chassis numbers match, they are 487 - 102892, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  19. Started by Mastiff,

In Norway we're getting a new rule for bikes from the first of Jan, which says that you need to drive a "medium heavy" bike for two years before you can start with the real fun stuff. My son's getting there in one and a half year, and he's dreaming of an RD 250 around '80, same type as his current 125 DX cast wheel bike. Is it realistic to find something like this, or would it be a wild goose chace? An RD 200 DX would of course be an alternative, I guess they have a pretty similar perfomance, right?

As mentioned on the thread in the new members section, just a few pictures of the new-to-me RS200. They make it look better than it actually is really, although the closeup of the exhaust and rear wheel shows what it's really like. Most of the chrome is slightly pitted but polishes up so it looks reasonable, but the real problems are very rusty exhausts and rusted wheel spokes, although the rims are not too bad. These are going to be be the most expensive items to correct and, with what I've already spent, almost makes the bike uneconomic to restore - I can't see it being worth more than £600 even in A1 condition. However that's not the point; what I want out of this…
