  8. Hi, I'm new to the club and hope someone can help me. I'm going bald and can't afford to pull out anymore of my hair. I just inherited a 1978 DT125E, with points and magneto. Trying to get it started and decide whether it's worth restoring. It has no spark. Could not get it to generate any ac voltage, even when I hooked up a drill to the crank and spun it. Took the flywheel off and the coils and points look good. But here's the strange thing - one end of the source coil was hooked to the condenser and then exited via the B/W wire which leads to the ignition coil. The other end was pigtailed with 2 leads coming off the lighting coil and exited via the Yellow wire. T…

First off i would like to say hello to you all. I have a 1980 XS400 SG its been sitting for about 4 years untouched in a shed. last week i tried to start it up and it was dumping gas out of the carb so i had a friend check it out and pressure test it, and fix the leaking issue. he replaced a needle, adjusted the float level to standard and i believe he said he replaced an o-ring. Today i got the carb back hooked it all back up and fired the bike up. At first it didn't want to stay running but after awhile it was fine until you tried to ride it. i put it in first and go to let out the clutch and just cut out. the left side was warmer that cold but barely and the exhaus…

Hi all, Request here for some info from the knowlegeable here.... I have the chance of obtaining a pair of very decent (not NOS) original silencers and rear mudguard for the XS400 from a chap in the US who has 'flat-tracked' his XS, and no longer wants them. He wants me to make an offer but, to be honest, I have no idea what such items would be worth.... Any ideas folks? Will drop a few photos here soon... Cheers CT

Bought an NOS rear tail lamp bracket from Stafford for the Gilera, origin unknown. No markings on it, but, there were 2 bolts with the number 4 in the heads. Now I know Kawasaki number their bolts like that so it was a matter of using google images to find the correct one. turns out it was a z400 twin bracket, it suits the Gilera and is very close to the original, so I'm keeping it

  15. Hi there. The 1972 LS3 100 muffler assembly is part number 336-14710-00, but I cant find that anywhere. The '75 RS100 muffler assembly is 463-14710-10 or 463-14710-50 I've been able to work out from the part diagram that they both use the same muffler joint to connect the muffler to the exhaust pipe, so I know they are the same diameter..they also both use the identical muffler stay (336-14771-00) they also look very similar, but not identical. I was hoping that someone with a RS100 muffler could measure it up for me so I can confirm that it will fit. I guess i need the distance from the front bolt to the first bolt that connects to the muffler stay. …

I own what I think is a 1980 or 1981 SR-250. The numbers on the frame are: MFR DATE: 8/80 I.D. #: JYA3Y600 3 BA 113183 A Little background; I am a ASE Automotive Technician by Trade. However, that doesn't mean I know anything about motorcycles. As a mechanic I frequently decode Vehicle identification Numbers to determine correct parts as well as service and maintenance procedures. I would imagine that there is some kind of decoding method for motorcycles. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am hoping to know for sure what it is I have, and possibly what it may be worth. I also have some questions about carburetor adjustment and chain lubrication. And i…

HI, I was checking my spark plugs after a ride recently and it seems the bike runs a little lean. I did replace old foam on the air filters through the winter and I wonder if I need to oil them. Before the change the bike ran rather rich, but old filters where really in bad shape. Now it seems somehow ok without oil - so do "to oil or not to oil" - that is the question... thanks Oskar

  18. Guys, have a look here (XS400SE81): I wanted to adjust my contact breakers, but it seems I am at the "end of scale" for them. I mean that the two cutouts at the LF plate are practicaly useless, and the screw at the RF is at the end of the oval hole. Do you think its time to exchange points or maybe I should play with "gap" setting (which seems correct 0.3-0.4 mm) and find the "best possible point", even though it will be off a bit? The LF is pretty much ok (1mm to mark). The RF is like 3-4mm off the mark, so needs adjusting. Points aren't that expensive in the end, so maybe I'll change them anyway, but maybe issue is somewhere else (cam chain?)? thanks …

  19. Hi guys, I'm trying to run my bike after long winter (still snowing though) and I just do a some checks here and there. I was measuring current drawn from the battery when "off" just to check for excessive current, but it was ok. I have turned the key to "ON" - neutral&oil lamps went on and I could measure 3Amps to negative battery terminal. I did fast calculations - neutral+oil lamp: 2x3.4W @ 12V -> 0.6A, even if I add something extra it's far from 3A. I have disconnected the whole "indicators box", but it still draws 3A. I've checked for the resistance at disconnected battery and disconneted indicators box - it's roughly 3ohms no matter what. The…
