Hello, I'm new to bikes. I did my CBT and went and bought a 1982 SR125 that seems to be in generally good shape. Here's a picture of me, the proud owner: The one problem is that the speedo doesn't work properly. When you start moving slowly, it seems to be ok until you approach 30mph, then suddenly the needle shoots up and down rapidly, as if it were a rev counter. And then, a little while afterwards, it'll be all the way at the maximum level, even though I'm only doing around 30mph. When I stopped at a junction, I watched it very slowly drop back down again. As I say, I'm new to this lark, but I read a few things about the speedo. I know there is…

Hi i have a 1992 xj900f and have covered 39k miles in 13 months with only the expected minor niggles. But now it has me stumped. I started it yesterday and it would only run on 2 cylinders, the right hand coil which runs the tacho isn’t working. The tacho kicked in once and the ignition fuse blew. I replaced the fuse and now it will only run on cylinders 1 and 4. I have disconnected the instrument console + tried – no difference I have isolated the tacho – no difference I have checked the resistance of the pickup coils – ok I have checked primary winding + secondary windings resistance on ignition coils –ok I have swapped the wires to the coils over – no spark on any…

My wife is in the process of buying a 2004 Virago 250 with about 24000 kms (1500 mi) on it and I noticed when we were checking the bike out the the bike starts fine but there is quite a rattle sound from starter which stops as soon as you release the starter button. The owner said they inquired with the mechanic and he said it wasn't unusual. I know the early Viragos had starter issues but this isn't a early Virago. I have owned and currently own two other bikes and none of them make any unusual sounds when the started is ingaged. Thanks Dan

Hi Guys I'm a new member and this is my first post! Not new to bikes.... but new to fuel injection............ Got a new MT-03 2008 model 2 weeks ago and for the first 300 miles all was fine. Then soon after, it would occasionally cut out when pulling away. This got worse and developed into hunting on a steady throttle. No problem when accelerating harder, but awful at anything other and cutting out a lot more when pulling away. Also, tickover went down to 1200rpm ish from previous 1500rpm. (I put it back to 1500 - 1600rpm as manual says) Tickover is hunting too!! (No guns or bows and arrows ; ) Now done 600 miles and going in for first service Tuesday 10th Fe…

Hi there first post on the forum! I have literally just bought an SR125 (1998) from ebay which needs a bit of work doing to it. It might sound silly but as I will need to collect the bike with my dads van and it is my first bike I was wondering if there is any specific tools I will need to remove the front wheel as I am not sure it will fit unless I remove it! I've got spanners and ratchet sets etc was just wondering about the brakes in particular. Last question which haynes manual would be suitable for the bike as I am used to car haynes manuals (model specific) but I am aware sometimes bike manuals can cover a few vehicles. Thanks very much guys sorry if I sound so ine…

Thanks for all of the advice so far from this forum- I appreciate it very much. I have a real problem that I cannot figure out- The turn signals light up as they should and with the left switch control changes sides perfectly The problem is they light up but do not flash???? I just puchased a new Flasher Relay thinking that was the problem- same result. It has to be a wiring issue? Any advice will help. Thanks you Greg

Hi everyone. Have fitted the big bore kit to my DT50 and this time added a bigger jet (#115, from the #98 that was originaly in there) and now it seems to be overly rich, starts on a light kick first time every time and idles very nicely, but in the low-to-mid range it feels very slow, if im in 5th gear at 30/35mph on a flat, it will barely pull me and only when i change down a gear does it accelerate. at first it was bad to the point where in the mid-range it would bog down alot, but i dropped the needle one position and it seems to have solved that. there is a large powerband high up the RPM, it can be physically felt when the engine reaches this as it really t…

Hey There, I recently has an accident on my 1982 Yamaha XS400. I used to commute everyday on the thing as I dont drive a car, the bike al the way. Recently I have had to rely on Public Transport I was coming down a hill, it high sided me and threw me off, coming down on the right hand side of the bike. This caused the handlebar to bend back about 90 degrees and the right hand controls to bend back around. This happend a couple of months ago, and its been in my driveway ever since. Its time to get it going again. I started the engine today, no worries all good there still, but as I went to move the bike, I noticed that the rear brake was stuck on. I tried moving the re…

Hi all. My first post, so please be gentle! With all the rain that we had in the South East on Monday evening, I got thoroughly soaked on my way home from work. During the ride, the bike would occasionally splutter, and a couple of times it cut out. It started again relatively easily, but literally yards from home it died and wouldn't fire up again. It's now been sat in my garage drying out, and the problem still persists. A couple of things: 1) is this likely to be wet electrics? If so, what in particular? Are there vulnerable areas I could start with? 2) Seeing a post about fuel cap breathing just now, is this a likely cause? I've had it for about 8 mo…

Hi, Finally got my puncture fixed, when I put the rear wheel back in, when pushing apart the brake pads to slide in the brake disk, one of the shims fell out. It was rusted to f**k, and practically crumbling. I took both pads out and they were knackered, I've ordered a new set of brake pads thinking they would come with shims, but they didn't. Ebay isn't helping much, any idea where I can get new or salvaged shims from?

Hi all Just got myself a 1991 DT, it's just had a service inc engine rebuild and when I ride around and then stop at the lights I notice a really strong smell of petrol, more so when the tank is full and the bottom of my trousers stink of it. Would this be due to a petrol tank overflow pipe? Or would it be over-fuelling in the carb and an overflow pipe releasing the excess? Could it be coming out of the exhaust manifold?

I have had my bike for about 5 months now, and at the beginning I had an intermitent problem that the bike just kept dying on me. It could be at lights, or driving along doing 60mph, it was very strange but seemed to stop. It has now re -emerged with a vengeance and is happening several times a day. I changed the spark plug but nothing happened. Just been to my local mechanics. He removed the fuel pipe and drained it in front of me. The fuel initiallycame out quickly and then began to drip and had no pressure at all. He then told me to take off the fuel cap whilst he continued to drain it. As soon as the cap came off the fuel began gushing out again. He says it's pr…
