  1. Got my bike back in November off a guy in Irlam. Off eBay the ad boasted the bike in fairly descent condition, looking to move to a bigger bike, restricted (As I need to be) and a few other odds and ends. Seemed a little too good for the £700 they were asking for it, but went up to see it anyway. Bike was pretty much as described when I got there, paintwork wasn't fantastic, engine was pretty grubby, covered in oil where the gaskets hadn't been replaced when they should have and when he turned the engine on - Rattled like F**k! Owner said it was "Something to do with the oil pump.." which is ridiculous, the oil pump is tiny and wouldn't cause a noise like that. D…

have this old dt, trying to turn it in to a gp sort of. crash diet ! electrical is becoming a problem. didn't realize it was a starter/generator type. was thinking of using a lithem battery, still going full LED even head light. but this old school reg has got me scratching my head. now with this starter generator, should i go with a 32v battery. to get the amps need for starter. or should i just pull it off and go with cdi and regular mag setup and kick start. would be cheeper and less weight. is this posible?

  4. Hi there guys, In late 2011 a friend of mine bought a Yamaha DT100 to do up with his wife, she wasn't interested and he didn't have the time to do it himself, so I managed to pick it up for a bargain £75! After getting it home, I did the standard ''Use buckets of water and mum's sponges for the dishes to get all the mud and crud off it, but also messing up the patio'' technique. After I got it clean (relatively) I decided to use the next ''take off everything you can and put it in a pile'' technique. The next thing I did, was cover it in WD-40, put it under a tarp and forget about it. It's now 2013, and after remembering I have a bike in the shed i…

  5. Hi Guy's I have a 1970 Yamaha 250 Enduro DT1C with a 21" front wheel. My bike originally had a 19" front wheel. I believe the 21" front came stock on the 1973 250/360 bikes with a low mounted front fenders. Does anyone know if the 73 front fender is different from the earlier 68/72 low mounted fender? The Yamaha parts list shows the same part numbers for all bikes using the low mounted fenders from 68 to 73 including 125cc and 175cc bikes. I have an original low mounted front fender, but it doesn't clear my 21" front wheel. Maybe my 3.00 x 21" tire is to large not sure. But the fender also appears to be to short. I'm not believing the part numbers should all be the …

So, I posted this on the YZF600R forum that I frequent and havent gotten any replies. Was hoping I could get some input from a design standpoint as to whether I'm on the right track here or not. I've attached the picture of the design below, as well as a shot of the bike so that you an get an idea of what I'm talking about. I'm sure this has been done before on here, but here's what several hours of daydreaming, a few beers, and MS Paint brought me to... I'm picturing using round bar for the majority of this, and using the heat and hammer method to flatten it in the places it has to have a bolt go through (maybe just welding tabs on?). My thought process was that r…

Well it has all started this weekend. Frame has been grit blasted and is now away for some minor welding. All foot pegs, clip ons and bits and bobs have been grit blasted and painted this weekend. Starting on the engine next weekend. Will get some photos up soon.

  10. not sure if this should be here, or in the general section, so feel free to move it! at the weekend i was in my old work, when one of the wifeys grabbed me asking if i know anyone looking for a cheap bike/project, as my ears tingled, she went onto explain that when her hubby moved away he left her his 1999 Suzuki SV650, and shes needing to move it on. its been sat for 2 years, combination of inside, and outside under tarp, and has damaged fairings from a drop. (not a crash, i know cos i helped her get it back up about a year ago). So chances are the batttery will be knacked, the tires will be flat/perished and the fuel/oil will need changing, but shes only loo…

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and would like to share ( and recieve:) ) some experience while restoring an old DT 125. Interesting enough; more and more of the cool bikes and cars from my youth, seem to have become vintage almost overnight. In january I found a 1983 DT 125 LC with most parts still in place, and decided to start what I call a 75% restore. That means get everything in good workin order, change everything thats worn out and get a decent, not showroom finish. Engine had low compression, so I did a Nr. 2 overbore, changed piston and tok the engine apart for examination. Pretty much everything had acceptable tolerances ( that puzzled me), but I changed the ma…

Hello all. I'm new to this forum. I recently bought a project bike to restore. It had been sitting in a guys garage for 3 years! He said it ran fine before he stored it. Unfortunately, he left the gas in it! I figured I would be able to fix it fairly easy since I have worked on 2-strokes in the past and know them pretty well. Here is what I have done so far drained tank, refilled with good petrol removed the carb and completely cleaned it. checked all the holes and made sure it was clear. adjusted the float height, set the fuel mix valve. even checked the main needle. removed the spark plug and cleaned and gapped to .024 changed the crank oil. charged up the batte…

  13. Started by stroker crazy,

I've long wanted to have a DT400 and when I was offered the remains of a failed project I took the plunge. This is what I received: Somewhere to start from, but the frame and suspension are too rough to be useful and too many components are missing. There is also a problem with the VIN. Undeterred, I kept looking and eventually found this: Rough but running - the motor sounds real good. Matching frame and motor numbers, some dodgy plastics, but a very good place to start from. I will update this thread as progress is made. Crazy

  15. I set off to buy a scooter 12 months ago and came home with a new XVS Classic 650. Amazing what some great service at a dealer to do for you. Then I discover that there were plenty of other interesting styles of bike out there that got me salivating. I am more a cruiser that a racer type of guy. With that in mind I have kept my eye open for a suitable donor bike for a project. One popped up several week ago a few hours out of town. It took a couple of weeks to arrange the trip to look at the bike and I liked what I saw had potential and bingo offer accepted and I got to drag home my donor bike. The Virago 1100 had sat somewhat exposed to the elements for the last 2 to 3 y…

Hi, I have just removed the exhaust headers and can from my XJ750 and while it's off i'd like to de-grease and paint the front of the engine. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Obviously I would love to cover the whole thing with petrol or some other de-greasing fluid and stem clean it but this would obviously allow water in to the bores and damage them.

seems as though all my parts have now arrived. So i will be starting work on this asap. just going to start with a strip down/rebuild. and put the new head on and hope that cures any issues it has. Decided to go with an inline fule filter after the tap. "and a new tap" Figured id like to see the fuel im also looking to see if i can find a big bore kit for it, but i dont seem to be able to find one. the closest i can find is for a yb 100 or dx 100 "both look the same to me" but not the same as an rsx 100. I had also planned on changing the sprocket size on the engine. was hoping to kill off some accel and add a bit to the top end. but if i cant find a bigger pi…
