I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find fork tubes for a 79 yamaha xs400 as mine are all pitted! I came across two new forks posted as good condition for $75 but they are off a 1980. They look like they would work from the pics but I'm not sure. Does anyone know is there were any changes between the years? Are the calliper bolt holes in the same place? Any help is greatly appreciated.....the snow is melting and gotta get my bike out!!!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the motorcycle world, and thought I'd start by buying an 80 xs400. It's seems to be a good bike, but it had some reving issues when I would be riding. So I looked around and saw that it might be the carbs... Well being a man I decided that I could fix this myself... So I took off the carbs, replaced the joints and the rubber tubing from the air filters to the carbs, the air filters. (I also did some other things , but nothing that has to do with the carbs) As for the carbs themselves. I took them apart and boiled them in lemon juice to clean them out, replaced all of the pieces, measured the floats to 1.26inches and put it back together... …

I put the bike away for the winter about a month ago, was rooting around in the garage this afternoon and happened see a big puddle of oil had spread out from underneath the dropcloth beneath my old 1978 YZ80. The entire contents of the transmission/clutch seem to have leaked out. I haven't disassembled anything yet but it looks like the oil seal for the driving sprocket has failed (or possibly the gear shift oil seal). Is the oil seal something I can replace from the outside (by removing the sprocket) or will this entail splitting the case? Does anyone have a DIY guide for this? I'm mechanically competent but don't like to get into something without at least some k…

Hey guys and gals. I'm trying to spruce up my new 78 yb100 and I have a couple questions about the wheels. What tires should I run? Looking for something grippy/sporty, not too concerned about looking vintage or rain performance. The wheels are pretty rusty and I was considering taking them apart, powdercoating and relacing them. I haven't done it before, but is that a job that is doable by a newbie? (not a complete dunce mind you). Thanks Ian

Are there any Generic sealed bulbs that will fit in my 1975 RS100B. I'm finding similar bulbs but nothing that seems to let it be known if it will fit. The bulb is a 6 volt 25/25 watt, and I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure they are 5.5 inches in diameter. Any help would be amazing thanks a bunch! Matt R

Hello all, I'm looking for the lil screw-in jet on the left side on the back of the carb. I think its different than the 'pilot jet' which is inside the carb.... This is called the 'air pilot jet'. I think the values on that hole are 170 when i looked at it (but on backup carb i have I think i saw 155), not sure whats stock. I think the 'air pilot jet' is #52 here (vs #12 for the 'pilot jet'): http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1978/XS400E/CARBURETOR/parts.html I think my is a bit stripped so i was looking to replace. MikesXS has 'pilot jets' but i didnt see 'air pilot jets' Thanks!, -Arian

i have been riding around on my new favorit toy for the past three days , mistakenly thinking that the small oil leak that was appearing as an occasional drip , was just a worn crank seal ,and an occasional top up of oil would be less cost effective than a overhaul. but to my horror i discovered the offending drip to be comming from the oil pump to carb feeder pipe, it's a twat to see and get at on the passola, when you have large hands and short sight. so be warned all you who own these fantastic little scooters, always stand to the rearmost of your ride before trips, and inhale , raw fuel is bad, spent two stroke , your good to go.

Hello, I'm Micha from the Netherlands and i have a beauty full 1979 xs400. The bike stood still for about 10 years and ran again after replacing the old fuel. Now i want to get it running properly. can someone tell me how to adjust the ignition timing? i know that the breakers need a gap of 0.4 mm and that the bike sparks when they open, but my flywheel had multiple signs on it, how do i know which one to use?

Hello There, Can any one help me, my 650 US custom has lost it's charging, so far through listening to others i have spent over £700 trying to fix it, i have replacd the brains/black box, carb diphrams, changed it to points, all because of it miss fireing, when the charge in the battery got low, i can do about 20 miles then the battery that is fully charged runs down, so it has to be the chargeing system, any ideas on what to look for next, would be welcome, thank you. Fred.
