Hey folks, I've recently lost my keys to my XS400 77, and ended up purchasing a new main assembly w/ extra keys (hooray!) But since I've lost my keys I haven't taken a look at the thing to figure out where to start. I notice that there are two bolts, what is the safest and best way to remove the current main assembly and secure this other one in there? Its nice that the wiring is snap-on, but I can't imagine 'squeezing' any tools into the main assembly area.

Hi all. Need a bit of advice. Am looking to get either an XJ900 or an FJ1200. I'm leaning toward the 900 as I prefer the shaft drive but depends on what comes along at the right price Thing I am most concerned about is I have no idea what would be considered high mileage for either of these bikes. I'm pretty sure both engines are quite robust and will take quite a lot of punishment but, for instance would you say 50k is getting into problem territory for an XJ900? Most of the bikes I am looking at of course are 15-25 years old and one would expect the miles to be fairly high but I just wonder if I buy a bike with 50k+ on the clock and given that it has been we…

Okay, I looked for a topic with an answer before posting this thread...couldn't find one. So when i turn the key to engage the starter on my 81 xs400, sometimes the motor turns over fine. But sometimes there is a god awful sound coming from the cases area. Kinda sounds like the chain is being slung all over the inside(just a description). Then when I stop and try again, the motor turns over fine. Does this sound like a problem with the starter, starter clutch, or something else I'm missing? Bobb

Hey guys, Just picked up a cool xs400h. Bought it not running but got it to run this weekend. Ive got a few issues with it. At first it would not idle but gradually came down to a steady smooth idle at about 1200rpm. I took it for a quick ride and It has a high rpm studder that seem like a revlimiter at about 6200rpm. Timing? carbs? few things to note here...the timing was really screwed up and I had to turn the tci pickup untill I got the bike to fire. The bike has been all apart so im guessing the guy that put it back together didnt know what he was doing. That being said how do I check the timing? or more specificly where do I shine my timing light when I hook it…

I was able to start my 75' xs500b off for a few seconds for the first time with the new Mikuni vm34 carbs I installed. I just need to wait on my custom throttle cable now. Does anyone know what to do with the jetting for these carbs? I plan on running with pod filters. Thanks, Jason

Hi, am a newbie here and looking for some help if possible, this will probably be the first of many questions as im new to Yamaha in general, just bought a very rough 78 250, engine / frame no 2x9000137, im trying to get it running, problem is that 90% of the wiring has been removed, can anyone assist me by advising which colour wires from the CDI magneto need to go where to enable to get a spark at the plug, i am only interested in getting the engine running, will not be fitting any lights, I assume that with this system i do not need a battery to run the engine ? Thanks for any help, and im sure i will be back with lots more questions !

Hi There, I was hoping someone out there may be able to help. I'm restoring my 1978 Yamaha XT250, my first project of this nature. The engine itself is in a terrible way and its going to be more economical to buy another one. I have found two today, one taken from an xt250 with a round swing arm profile and the other newer one from a square swing arm profile. Will the newer engine fit on my bike ?. I dont know what year the swing arms changed, so cant date the engine & the chap selling it doesn't know. Any help in this area would be great. Also if anyone could recommend other places to pick up engines i'd be very grateful. many thanks Rupert

Just curious, i lost one of the rubber 'round' gasket part that goes behind the Float Gasket... Pic attached... I didnt see it anywhere on yamaha's offical parts: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1978/XS400E/CARBURETOR/parts.html Is this part terribly important and if so, where do I buy it ?

Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum, but have been reading on it for a while. Amazing what Google can find On to the problem. Some dude once wrote: Too small of a pilot can be indicated by an idle that "hangs" after blipping the throttle or by having the motor be slow to return to idle after running at higher speeds. Once again, mix screw settings may help here. That sounds exactly like my problem, so I thought that I'd check that pilot jet out. And what I found was a screw instead of a jet. Or I think it was. It was actually first after I put the carbs back on, that I discovered this issue, so the pictures doesn't give a very good view of the …

Looking at purchasing a 1967 Big Bear Scrambler, with the 305 engine. From what I can tell, it was only produced for one year. While I'm sure that makes it a bit more unique, I'm wondering what people's thoughts on availability of parts would be? Thanks

I haven't been on the forum in a while. I have been in the process of rebuilding my carbs. Everything was going ok, until I got to the main jet, which I could not figure out how to remove. The manual said it could be pushed out....I couldn't make that work. In the process of trying to get it out one of the arms that hold the float snapped. Does anyone know a place that sells whole carbs, rebuilt? I found what I think is a match on eBay, but it doesn't appear to be rebuilt. Any ideas? I appreciate any help I can get. Aaron

Hi folks, a friend of mine mine living in Japan might pick up a used Virago 250, and was wondering if the bike can handle her Widder electric vest. It's a previous generation to the last version, listed here. I could've sworn it was 22 watts draw, but I'm gonna go with the 33 watts listed there (hers is a size 38), as I can't imagine them being that different electrically. Can the little Virago handle it? I don't know anything about this bike, but for comparison I used the same vest on my old '93 Suzuki Bandit 400, which I believe has a 250 watt generator, and I never had any problems with it. Unlike modern vests Widders' were very efficient (sad to see those guys go).…

I am looking for people or companies that have performance parts for late '60's two stroke twins. I have a '68 Bonanza 180 that I am trying to turn into a Ascot Scrambler clone. I will have plenty of nice take off parts to sell or trade. I am going to use this bike for a local indoor flattrack winter series, in a 200cc class. My pile... '63 Ascot Scrambler 250...

Hi, a quick question, I recently bought a XS400,for some reason I'm not able to roll the bike backwards while in gear with the clutch pulled in?. The guy who previously owned it before said there had once been a sidecar on the bike, is this problem due to having been set up for a sidecar?.
