I spoke to Yamaha Scandinavia in my desperation to fix the front brake of my son's DX, and it turns out that the lid/cap of the master cylinder and the master cylinder assembly is not available any more from Yamaha. But the guy at the main parts department (which is in Sweden for Norway and Sweden) said that I could use the RD 125 LC master cylinder on the bike if I could get it to fit with brake line and stuff. The difference in brake fluid pressure was not enough to create any problems. And there are tons of LC master cylinders on eBay, so that I can get any time. But has anybody ever done that switch, or does anybody have both bikes so they can tell me if the banjo bo…

There's a crack in the corner of the lid of my son's 125 DX, and it's leaking a drop of fluid every day. I tried to search for both cover and lid on eBay, but I couldn't find anything. Can somebody tell me the best place to get something like that? The bike has never been sold in Norway, so parts have to be imported specially. And parts in Norway, especially for rare bikes, are hysterically expensive! So I would appreciate a tip on that.

It doesn't take long to fill in the survey ( even if you are a multi-classic vehicle owner) and you can do so anonymously should you feel the need. It may help to preserve our ability to use classic bikes and cars on the road in the future. http://fbhvc.co.uk/survey-2011/

Well, it will idle for a little while, but then it just dies. And that will happen if I let it slow down too much without engaging the clutch and rev it a bit. Where should I start to look for this problem? The bike should be in good shape, it has been checked out in a Yamaha garage before I got it. Do I need to do a carb job on this thing, or can it be something easier? It happens on both warm and cold enine, and it will run for maybe 10 seconds on idle before it slowly starts dying. It really doesn't remind me of anything I have had before on my 350's. But I'm still thinking carbs or something else in the fuel system, not electrical. Any objections?

Hi All, I couldn't quite figure it out whether there is some lubrication for the starter motor/starter motor clutch and how it works. Have a look here: http://yamxs.joaquim.ch/cariboost_files/1977xs400.pdf It's not the same model, but still the same place: page B9 part 1&2 which covers things from page A10. In MY bike there is oil there, since it's dripping from the gasket a bit. Question is - should there be oil? how much? Is it an "oil bath" or? I have ordered a new gasket anyway, but I am not sure whether I should drain the oil first before taking that cover off or it'd be enough to tilt the bike on its right and catch the tiny bit of "leftovers"? …

I am removing my front master cylinder on my 81 xs400 to rebuild it. I need to know how the brake light switch is removed. I can't tell by looking and don't want to destroy it by twisting and pulling on it. I guess while i'm at it, does anyone have anyone have any advice on this rebuild beyond how to remove the brake light switch?

The footrest on the right side is bent after a crash some time, and it's too close to the kick starter. Should I remove the assembly and try to bend it on the work bench or could I simply use my good old pipe (which I use as a power arm on stuck bolts) and bend it while it's on the bike? I would like to avoid breaking it, but I'm guessing that if it hasn't been bent back and forth several times that shouldn't be a problem, right?

This issue has likely been already answered somewhere in here, but I couldn't find anything using several search terms...nonetheless, I apologize in advance... My '78 XS 400E starts easily on the kick-start (starter not working...winter project), idles fine at around 1300rpm, carburates smoothly during normal acceleration in all gears, except at around 5500 and above, and going up hills in top or 5th gear. Then it hesitates a bit, and won't give any more than about 6000rpm. Battery is fully charged, new gas, carbs have not been rebuilt, but were dismantled and blown out with carb cleaner and compressed air. No crap noted in float bowl when taken apart. No rip…

I notice maybe 1 drip every 48 hours but when the bike is running it seems to drip a lot more.. and it almost seems like its watery oil... I dunno this motorcycle stuff is still real new to me. I took pics of where it appears the oil is coming from but I don't see any place to tighten anything.. The dam Haynes manual doesn't really mention anything there to tighten that I could find. what do you all think. thanks

Hi all, While I was out last week, the bike started making a bit of a racket with what sounded like a bearing playing up in the bottom end. I'm pretty sure it's at the back on the left, behind the drive sprocket. It will make the noise with the engine turning over in neutral. I've got the engine out and can get it to make the noise (sometimes) by turning the drive sprocket. I'm thinking I'm headed for getting the crankcase apart but would appreciate any words of advice before I start. Thanks in advance, Gordo

Hi guys i have already introduce my self a couple of weeks ago and since then i haven't been able to ride. first it didn't idle and i also noticed low compression on the right just by putting my hand on the exhaust,i went and adjust it the valves but i think i may be a little bit off not much. However compression was the same (hand feel),the only thing that change some how the left sound it aggressive and louder still didn't idle, one more thing i just got a new battery because i had to jump start it with my car all the time,i don't know if is ok to jump it with the car but i did until it wont even turn any more with the jump so i got a new battery. Hello all, I am in need of some help. I just purchased a 1975 Yamaha DT400 in pretty decent shape except it is completely missing the carb. After searching for a carb. for that specific year and model I am comming up pretty thin for options of buying a used carb. I was wondering what other years or models of bikes that the carb would be compatible with mine? Or if anyone has a used carb. in good condition that they would want to sell. Thanks for any information. Josh

Hi, I am now getting around to getting my XV750 running. Usual story, bought as a restoration project last year from someone that said he hadn't spent any time on it but it became obvious he had, but failed to get anywhere. I have replaced the cracked starter motor and fitted all the suggested upgrades, fitted an almost new standard exhaust to give the mice time to find a new home before I evict them from the still solid original. I have fitted another searter relay, cleaned the carbs and numerous other stuff. It will just about start and chug on one cylinder. I have now decided to get serious and start doing things properly so I have stripped the carbs and sent…
