Hi, I've got an old 1979 175mx for a bit of off road/green lane fun. Its a bit ropey but good fun if you don't expect too much of it! It could do with a little bit more power though, I've fitted an expansion chamber with a DEP end can (takes me back..) and its going a lot better. Running with the top bit of the airbox removed, and with a 145 main jet seems to be a brink on the rich side but better safe than sorry, already holed 2 pistons while trying to lean it off last time! I have a friend with porting tools, and knows what he's doing but any tips for what to do with the ports? Don't want to end up with anything too peaky but I understand it'll always be a tradeof…

Just recently bought an XS400 Heritage Special. I have to pick up the repair manual still but I thought I would ask all of you a question to see if I could get started on the problem sooner than later. Firstly, the turn signal works mostly but sometimes when standing at the stop lights the signal just stays on and does not flash. I discovered that if I rev up the engine just a little bit the signal starts to flash again. Any one experience that before or have any ideas where to start searching for the problem? On a side note my battery isn't keeping a charge. I managed to give the battery a good charging from a battery charger, put it in the bike and used my mul…

Hey guys, I'm trying to restore a 1974 Yamaha. The engine is seized and the suspension is shot. Also some of the wiring is faulty and the horn doesn't work. I have limited mechanical experience. I've been working on a GTI for autocross. THis is my first bike project. If there are any good reference websites or manual books, I couldn't find any. A forum is a great spot for information I know that, but I like to read/learn it on my own. So if anyone knows any that would be helpful. Also the exhaust is shot, a local shop does custom car exhausts so I'll ask them about bikes, and some other minor things. This is going to be a complete rebuild of the entire bike I'm …

Hey there, I'm new to posting in these forums but often read the threads here. I'm currently restoring a '82 XS400 while trying to keep an '81 running. The '81 is experiencing that dreaded high idle problem, where the engine revs up to 4000 plus rpm and stays there. Seems to be lean, but numerous carb cleanings/tinkerings haven't had much effect. I'm on my third carb tear down, clean out, reset right now. However this is not the issue I come to you with today. I had purchased a parts bike for 250 dollars and when it was dropped off it was quickly obvious that it was in better condition than my daily driver. I asked the previous owner what happened, and he said he…

Hi all I've just started a complete rebuild of the first bike I every road its a 1977 250 DT I would list all that needs doing but Its easyer to say what I've got. Wheels, frame, engine missing almost every thing else. Parked it in dry storage when I moved off the farm it was going when I moved.Wife says mid life crisis is around the corner. I've seen loads of second bits mostly 175DT of similar year got my parts book can any one tell me if the 175 and 250 switches, headlights, speedo, tacho are compatable. First topic when I find out how will put some photos on but she looks very sick at the moment.

Greetings Everyone! I'm a new member and just inherited my first bike, my father's 73 Yamaha CT3 175 Enduro. I was hoping for two things: 1. If I could be PM'd a service manual for the bike, I would be very appreciative. 2. Advice would be helpful The motorcycle runs great except for one issue: it cannot hold idle without stalling. The bike runs fine and operates great above 2500rpms. As soon as I let the throttle go, the engine dies. Whether I'm in neutral, 1st, 2nd, etc.. I believe it has to do with the carburetor but don't have a lot of experience with this type of work. Any input/suggestions would be deeply appreciative. Thanks everyone! PS, The b…

I recently swapped out my stock bars for a pair of BikeMaster clubman cafe style bars, but noticed that the brake fluid reservoir is in a tilt. I'm concerned about fluid being able to flow through, because the opening is now the highest point on the reservoir, so all the fluid pools down by the opposite corner of the opening. Is the reservoir pressure activated and does fluid still run through, or do I need to find an aftermarket fluid reservoir?

I am not affiliated with this seller in any way other than I did buy my '80 XS400 from him. Not trying to promote his sale - just thought folks on this forum would find this listing interesting. Hope I am not breaking any rules. If so, please remove or move to the proper place. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320620696734&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AFSEL%3AUS%3A1123#ht_1860wt_1167 Update: This bike sold for $2002.17 U.S.

Hi all, Just a quickie, I have acquired some of the lovely (looking) XS400 '80 wire wheels, both drums. The front is the twin leading shoe model (if anyone has these?) I was just wondering how good they are? I know they are going to be worse than disks, I am only interested in fade characteristics and life of the shoes. Thanks in advance, Joel
