  2. Im trying to convert to pods (documenting the process for a future guide to help others) and from what Ive read on here other people with xs400/360+pods have always used the pods on the end of the rubber boots because of the room between the battery box. see picture There is only 3 1/2 inches from the carb to the battery box. I did just now find a 15 degree angled uni pod 4" long / 57mm ID which would be perfect to hook direct to the carbs.. my question is do you think it will fit with the angle.. cause no way straight it would. <insert that's what she said jokes> I also just found out parts and more have yamaha oem rep…

Hi y'all. Newbie from Milwaukee! I'm new to the site and new to motorcycles. Thanks to everyone for the invaluable input! I've looked around for another thread regarding my questions, so if I'm being redundant please direct me to where I need to go. (I have looked) I've got a 1979 xs400 that I used to go to work a few years back. I recently decided to rebuild the bike down to it's most elemental parts. My goal is to end up with a sweet bike and learn everything about my bike in the process. I'm willing to take my time. I've removed most everything and just tonight I removed the wiring harness. (labeling everything) The insulation on all of the wires is brittle…

I upgraded the ignition on my 78 xs400 from points/condenser to electronic ignition using parts from 80 & 81 machines. Nice blue spark now dancing on each plug. Problem is, I don't know which coil plug goes to each coil. I have 3 different manuals (including yamaha) and all have same wiring diagram. None show which cylinder coil connects to which plug (one with orange lead, one with grey lead). I have a 50/50 chance, but before I fire it up, I thought I would ask if anyone could tell me which one is which. Does plug with Orange lead go to the left cylinder? Thanks & Cheers...

Also is the steering lock the same key as ignition ? and any advise in pulling the lock out ,cover from lock missing can see the brass pin/broken off and the key goes in will not turn though -the bits/frame etc was left in a shed for years and it shows also been a field bike -the seat is a old fertiliser bag!!!! will put some pics up when i can, belive it or not the r…

hi all. i am a new member to this forum and new to the world of yamaha. i have recently acquired a 1980 yamaha dt 175 from my father-in-law that has been sitting in a barn for 10 years or so. got it home the other day and after a couple of kicks it started right up! rode it for a half-hour or so and then put it away so i could start cleaning it up. cleaned everything up and today after filling with new gas, 2 stroke oil, and new crankcase oil, i couldn't fire it up. won't even try to start. figured maybe i forgot to hook something up, and started looking around the bike. i found that the rectifier (DE41 is listed on it) has one tab that is broken off. also, i am getting g…

Howdy, I have an 81 XS 400. Picked it up for free from a friend who couldn't get it running. I stripped and cleaned the carbs, replaced the spark plugs, installed a new battery, and changed the oil. All of these measures together got the bike running and I've been putting some miles on it over the past week. There are some pretty obvious issues with the bike that I would love your insight for. 1) Literally every time I turn the bike off after I ride, the engine back fires very loudly. I suspect that the timing is way off and have a timing light, but don't really know how to use it on this new bike. 2) The idle is super high. It was hanging out between 6000-8…

Hi New to the forum and i have a problem. Just bought a 1977/78 Yamaha DT 125 E twin shock (the bike of my dreams) and it has an uncertain past and came with no registration number or log book. It was bought by me from by a local guy would bought it a few years back from the family of the owner who had passed away. The bike had lay in his garage for 20 years probably never being ridden and the family knew very little about the bike. After the owners death the family attempted to gain a registration document from DVLA, but DVLA sent back the V62 form saying they required the registration number in order to process the form? I phoned DVLA yesterday and they told me to …

  12. hi there, I know there arent many yb100 owners lurking judging by the response to my previous topics (maybe I should be posting in the general mechanics section?) but here goes anyway. I removed my forks earlier today and laid them on the floor and I noticed oil came out the very top of the fork where the bolt usually sits. is this normal? I noticed there isnt a drain plug on the bottom so is it possible that they are just so dainty they just need to be flipped to be emptied and filled? when replacing I should be putting in 160ml of oil right?

Hiya chaps and chappettes. I've purchased this old clanger and I long to turn it from tragic to magic. I've introduced myself in this thread So I've got this little bike sitting in my shed now. I've noticed on Ebay there are foot grips - yay! And I can get rear lens, from the same shop. Nice. Any idea where I can get a schematics diagram or even better a workshop manual? And - anyone got a fairing for sale? Ideally I'd like to get this fella stripped down, re- powder coated in brand new colours - get the seat re-done, re-chromed etc. Should be a fun project! Here's the pictures of the bike to date: and a picture of…

Hi I have been very slowly building this bike up from bits for the last 15 years,I was given a pile of bits - 2 wheels a engine minus piston, pair of handelbar with switches and a rear swinging arm with monoshock from a friend at work, as soon as I saw the rear monoshock and round section swinging arm I knew it was a 175 MX which I always wanted, just missed out with the 250 learner bracket came in. Anyway I have just got myself a frame with V5"ebay" and due to cost of fuel getting shut of car so can carry on with the build again, not an exact/showroom rebuild due to lack of cash which is one of the main reasons taken 15 years but a bike for getting to work and a bit of …

Hi guys, anyone know where you can find a new plastic reservoir to replace the ones on the late 70s early 80s XS 400s? Mine is old and leaking around the bottom. I have taken it apart and cleaned it thoroughly, but it now leaks past the large O-ring that is supposed to seal the reservoir to the aluminum master cylinder. I either need to get a replacement (with O-ring) or find someway to seal it that won't break down from the brake fluid. Brakes work ok, but I don't want to grab a handful of brakes one day and get nothing but air

It is possible to replace the forks/triple crown on my yb 100 with something of a similar sized bike? If so, which diameters and lengths do I need to be aware of while sourcing replacements?
