So, i have a 1985 maxim 750 that has been running great up until now. All of a sudden, when i start the bike, fuel starts pouring out from under it. At first, i assumed a fuel line had come loose or broke, but after tracing it out, it looked like it was coming out of the rubber boot that covers where the drive shaft mates to the engine. After pulling back the boot, sure enough, it was a mix of gas and oil (mostly gas now) just pouring out from the spot where the shaft leaves the engine case. Any idea what exactly would cause this to happen, and happen this bad? I'm assuming piston rings or something, but what could cause it to be this bad all of a sudden? The gas ju…

  4. After splitting the cases on my 1978 DT175E, I got the transmission in place and aligned the shift drum neutral ball indicator just off the neutral indicator on the case, the gears spun freely, and I followed the clymer manual through sealing the cases back together. I installed the cam pin, cam, shift arm, springs etc. until the manual says to push the shift arm down into 1st gear to check the alignment of the index marks on the cam and upper part of the shift arm. My marks were not originally in line, so the manual says to adjust using this eccentric screw and locknut. I dont have a deep socket to loosen it so I just lifted the upper shift a…

Hi all, I posted a couple of years ago about an engine block that I had stripped the threads off where the stud goes in. I repaired it using Epoxy Steel Weld (which was amazing, actually took 2 mole grips, a stud extractor, 50cm lever and a blowtorch to remove!!). However, I have decided to replace the studs and need to drill out and put in a Heli-Coil thread repair. My problem is this....using a digital calliper, I measured the diameter of the stud as 6.25mm. The diameter of the threaded ends was ~6.7mm. I didn't measure the pitch. I can't use an M6 helicoil because it'll be too tight. What size should I be looking for, as Heli-coil's seem to come in the metric …

I need to remove the fuel tank on my XJ750. Its half full/half empty depending on your out look in life, but cannot remove it with out losing all my fuel. It has a prime, on, and reserve. What the best way to take it off? I need to remove it as the bike is running extremely rich, misfiring and generally sounding like the proverbial sack. I need to get the carbs sorted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  9. hi all im on rebuilding the engine a 1985 xt 600 cc and ive came across a bit of a stumbling block. its a 550 cc lump in a 600 frame and before i realized this i bought a gasket kit for a 600 cc :eusa_doh:the cylinder head and base gaskets will be no good but my question is will the rest of the set fit ? looking on Google images the 550 and 600 engines took identical and so im hoping that the only difference is the bore

So I took the tank off my 1983 xj550r to paint it, put it back on and gas is pouring out odf the carbuerator. Took the tank back off and found that there are two wires that go to the electronic fuel gage are compromised. When I tried to start it,(it was really low on gas,) i poured maybe 1/2 gal. in and immediately gas poured into the carb with the reserve tank switch in the off, my question is would the electronics of the switch/gage system possibly cause the gas to be released from the reserve when the switch is in the off position rather than the intended result? I'm stuck and really would rather not be here as the day winds down, it'll start but won't stay runni…

Hi. My XJ's fuel pump died on me and at 360€ (280€ if I use the one from Thundercat) I can't afford a new one. Does anyone has experience with the repair kits sold on eBay? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-Fuel-Pump-Repair-Kit-/360361109756?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53e73228fc It looks quite simple to install and I think I can manage to do it on my own, but I'm afraid to spend money and still end up with a dead fuel pump. Other than that, any place where I can buy a new one cheap? Thanks

Hi guys, I have a 1977 DT 175 MX and it has been running well up until this summer. I changed from using an oil tank to pre-mixing. I don't know if this is the cause of my problem or not. So when I started the bike it had no idle. Twisting the skrews made no difference. I took apart the carb and cleaned it without result unless fuel flowing out of the overflow and an idle of 6000-7000 rpm or no idle can be a result. Any help or insight appreciated. Regards, Onida

  13. Hi All, Model: 2003 V-star 650cc. In Ireland we call them Dragstars. The one I have was originally imported from the USA. Mileage: Approx 5000 miles (the bike is new to me and I have to presume the mileage is genuine. But I notice both tyres are tubless and not the same make. For example, front tire is Continental. I would have presumed original tyres would still be on bike and they would be tubled.) Problem: Oil is being blown up from crankcase breather pipe (I believe thats what it is called) into the airbox. I noticed it as it weaps/leaks out the side of the airbox (part that sits on top of carbs) and more or less drips off the end of the idler adjuster…

As the title shows, I'm having problems getting the thing to start. I switch the ignition on and I hear what I assume is the power valve self-checking. I then try the electric start only to get a single click from the starter solenoid. (starter is brand new, thought this would sort the issues) The battery is new and putting out a good charge. It does have fuel. The plug is new and clean Even trying to kick-start it won't fire it up. It has compression but won't catch. I've tried to put the bike in gear, rock it back and forward a little to see if that helps the starter but no luck. If anyone can give me a few more things to try I'd really appreciate it. (…

I have a 2009 V-Star 950 Tourer. I'd like to remove the bags but when I started doing so, I realized that the rear pegs bolt onto the bag mounting frame. There are no bolt holes in the bike frame to remount them to. Is there a conversion kit I could use so I could still have a passenger but be able to remove the bags if I want to? I had thought that they were simple bolt ons but it seems that the tourer is meant to be as-is forever. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know any Yams that would have a 6 7/8 or 7" headlight - trails type - same distance between the ears? I am looking for something that looks like a DT complete unit if they are 7 inches for the Suzi. UK spec or at least MOT'able, 6 volts with a pilot light. I am not asking for a shed raid, just something that I can get as a pattern part. There is some stuff on evilbay, but nothing grabs me. Thanking you all very much.

Okay hello. This is my first post on here. I am a new member on here. Just yesterday i dumped my bike while avoinding serious injury and accident. I had to ride to work the rest of the way after the crash. I'm a little irritated because my bike got me to work fine, then in between shifts I started it up, and the bike's ignition was pooping out. Needless to say I coudln't get a block away before it was puttering and dying out on me. I have looked at a few places for a new ignition, but they seems to run at about 150 dollars. I have a 93 Yamaha Virago 750E, and if anyone coluld point me in the right direction as to wher I might be able to find one for cheap that would be gr…

  19. Hi, a few friends and I decided to have a wee challenge, we had to buy a 125 scooter get it running and road legal all for a few hundred pounds, and then we are going on a 4 night trip over the Scottish highlands. I found myself a Yamaha majesty 2002 model. I have found that all the indicators work but fast, I have swapped out the relay but no difference, I tested the wires and found two plugs not attached to anything, the first is a twin plug with a green wire and a brown wire each have power when indicators are on, one for each side. Next to it is a 3 wire plug, red, black and light brown, red is power light brown powers up similar to flasher relay and same colour and …
