For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by jordanscycles,

So i picked up this bike yesterday from a guy that had it under a bike cover in his back yard for an unspecified amount of time. He said he could never get it to run for more than 10 minutes. I went through and oiled the slides, cleared the main jets even though they didn't really need it and put a few drops of wd-40 on the needle valves. The floats looked good but I did not check the level. So basically this bike will run on the first of the two choke settings, which is half choke. I was able to ride it like that last night and it ran ok. It sputtered and back fired when you let the throttle off, just as it does when its idling without load. But when I gave it gas it qui…

Just bought a used Yamaha 400 XS. I bought it a week or so ago and I had it running (roughly) and rode it around a bit *driveway*. I parked it and the next day it would not start. Replaced the battery, still nothing. Dont know what could havve changed. I've toggled the choke and given it a bit of gas. It will kick over but not run. Any ideas.

  3. Hey guys I have been lurking on this forum for a little bit and i noticed the search function is not all that great. So my situation is I aquired a old gem for 200 dollars with a rebuilt engine. It is currently not mounted onto the frame and I have to buy some electrical bits in order to get it running again. My question is will i get wacked with late registration fees since it is almost 20 days? The bike is not running but I believe they need to do a visual inspection in order to transfer the bike into my name. Also I have been searching for a cafe seat with no luck. I heard that the xs400 had a wide seat frame so it is especially hard to find a good seat for it. Also I …

Help, I have just bought a 1973 XS2, at least I think it is an XS2. The frame/engine numbers are S650-114544 but it hasn't got electric start and I thought the XS2 did have electric start. Can anyone help? Will it run okay on unleaded. Also, is there a good source of XS2 spares in the UK. I want to built a flat tracker but I do need some genuine XS2 parts to overhaul the engine.......50000 miles so it will need a bit of TLC. I also need switchgear and the knob from the damper adjuster on the headstock. Can any one help? Many thanks. Tim.

Hello. I just got the opportunity to pick up a 1979 TX 500 (XS since it's from 79?) for a song and couldn't resist. Cost me 50 bucks and an RC plane - which I figure isn't too bad of a deal for me. It's not running now, but what can you expect for that price? Being delivered to me Saturday afternoon when I'll really be able to see what i'm getting in to. Some photos from the seller for your viewing pleasure: I've never had bad luck with a Yamaha so i'm hopeful all will be well. Currently in the garage is a 1994 FZR 1000. Yamaha wise i've gone through a handful of FZRs (2 600s and on my second 1000) and a 1972 R5B. I…

Howya all, I have aquired a yam but not sure what the model is as its not on the log book. Is there anyway i can find out from the frame number. 2KR are first on the frame then a few other numbers. Its 1988 4cyl 4stroke 250cc Genesis. I need to get a few bits but not sure of the correct model. I was told it was a YZF but looking at the pictures it dosn't look like one. Any help would be greatly accepted and read over a pint of the black stuff.

Hello to you all I have an XS 650 crankshaft assembly with 256 conrods that has a 17 tooth camshaft drive chain sprocket. As far as I am aware 18 is the norm with 36 teeth on the camshaft itself. The crank assembly is in excellent condition and if it were possible to avoid having to replace the 17 for an 18 tooth sprocket I would prefer to do this, why fix it if it is'nt broken? Is there a 34 tooth camshaft available and if so from which model, he writes tinged with trepidation. Your help in providing the answer to this problem would be greatly appreciated as Jeremy Kyle is unable to help. Kind regards Powermax

Hey guys, Just wondering if any of you have replaced the camshaft seal on your bikes before and where/how you got thr "right" oil seal, I've spent a few hours comparing part #'s on Yamahas part directory and thru ebay/mikes XS. There are more than one part # associated with this specific oil seal so I'm wondering if any of you have successfully done this and had good results ie:the right seal purchased. thanks in advance, Travis K.

One of the benefits of being a teacher is that I have summers off and can invest my time in things that are less frustrating than working with middle school children. Like sanding and polishing engine cases for 5 hours. Ok, so here was my process. I got a bowl of warm water with a little dish soap in it to remove any difficult grease and to keep the water nice and slick, and a sponge with a scrubber side. I also had 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit wet sanding paper. The first thing I did was clean up the cases with the soapy water and scrubber sponge. Then starting with 400, I sanded side to side (as much as possible), up and down with 600, side to …

Hey im new here and i just picked up a 1970 Yamaha Ct1 175 from one of my buddies and it wont shift at all. The shifter wont budge one bit. I took both side covers off an noticed that the gear thats located behind the clutch basket is broken and another gear that is connected to the drive sproket has a few teeth missing out of it. Would this have anything to do with it not shifting? The engine turns over. Ive never taken apart a transmission on a motorcylce before but I am a handy man when it comes to fixing things and working on engines. If anyone has any ideas or even diagrams of how to take it aprat that would be terrific. Thanks, Jake

Hello, Well yesterday I was running low on gas, so as I was driving I reached down and turn the petcock from On to Reserve. But just as I finished doing this I got a huge electrical shock. I am now trying to find out what could cause this. Any thoughts? I might have touched the pickup coil wire when I was turning the petcock, or maybe the spark plug wires. The spark plug wires are brand new and have new plug caps on them, so I didn't think this would be the problem, but the shock was very strong. Is the pickup coil on top of the cylinder outputing a high voltage too? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hey y'all. I was pondering on some things and wanted to run them by the educated ones(as I am not that educated about values of bikes, models, etc). I have a 75 RD200 and paint isn't horrid or anything but on the tank there are two dents near the forks, chipping and alose looks like a worn down part of the paint where you can see metal. There is some touch up paint in blue but not even close to the paint color. I wanted to see if it would really devalue the bike if I sand down the parts and repaint the bike. I would have it repainted to as close as possible to the original paint(or the exact if I can find a paint code) and If I'm able to find the decal for it I would a…

Ok, so still working on this 75 mx400. I couldn't get the bike to start up at first, and determined the guy who owned it before me hooked up the kill switch wrong. I cut the switch and voila! Fired right up. Only problem now is no way to kill (besides the obvious stuff). I bought a new switch, and hooked it up. Now, once again no start up. I cut the wire again and it started up like it should. Diagnosis? The CDI is very old and pretty nasty. Could it be something in there? Any thoughts of course are appreciated! Thanks for your help.

The right side fork gives up oil. Like to replace the oil seal & dust ring. The dimensions are not given in the manual. Does anybody know, please? PS Few weeks ago I put fresh oil in the tubes. Before that I had a hard time to get the rusty stoppers out on top. Forced them down with a bamboo rod and hammer just enough to free the clip. Hardly moved...... .....UNTIL next morning.... When I loosened the upper telescope clamps the stoppers rocketed into the air LOL I learned my lesson as there is no such advice in the manual
