My bike is finally about road ready after a new rear tire and inspection by a shop, but since I picked it up the turn signals have not been working correctly. Switched on (engine off) I can hear a relay click once when I move the signal lever left or right, but the most that has ever produced was an indicator that comes on solid, not blinking, or I just get no light at all. Usually no amber indicator on the center amber "idiot light" between the gauges but occasionally that will come on. I doubt anyone has messed with the wiring with this bike... Is there a fuse somewhere to check? Nothing under the seat is obviously blown. Thanks for any tips. Also would I be le…

Putting together the crankcases, when I tighten the bolts the crankshaft gets stuck/so stiff it can barely be moved. I've taken the cases apart numerous times, but can find anything that would cause this. The only thing I can suggest is the upper crankcase pushing down on the crankshaft, but that wasn't happening before? And there was little-no gasket cement when I initially took it off. This has cost me 2 days of work on an already limited timeframe so any help would be much appreciated

Alright not exactly sure how to describe this one but here goes. My '77 xs400d has a mechanical speedometer. The speedometer is driven by a gear assembly attached to the front wheel. This gear assembly is turned by a special nut inside the tire. This nut was broken when I bought the bike. But when i bought the bike the front forks and tire were off so I did not see how the front tire was set up. From the manuals it appears that the rotor goes on the right hand side of the front tire, and the speedometer driving gear assembly goes on the left. Before reassembly I decided to break down the gear unit and recondition it by lubing it up since it was pretty damn dry when I g…

I was wondering what can be done to stiffen up the front end of my bike. The front will compress under just the weight of the bike. I have a spare set of forks, new seals to put in, and a set of S&W aftermarket springs. Is there anything else I can do? I just don't like how much the front compresses before you even set off to ride. thanks

Hi all, The other day I changed the oil in my 82 400 Maxim along with the filter. However, I don't recall I put a washer (#7) between the filter and the cover. Also, My filter was just sitting on the cover with this side facing down. My question is, is the filter supposes to just sitting on #1 or should it somehow click with the cover?? Thanks

the foam in my around my '71 CT1's air cleaner is totally disintegrated, and the part ( # 248-14451-00-00 ) is no longer available...can't even find a NOS one on eBay. K&N's site offers some disc-shaped "clamp-on" replacement, which sells for $45, and i guess involves removing the stock air cleaner box. wondering what the best solution is? is there some way to replace the foam that's on the old air filter frame? what would you do?

my bike, a 1976 xs 360, runs best with its mufflers off. Unfortunately, I cook at a resort up in NH where I also live and even though the bike is small, it puts out some serious decibels when those mufflers aren't on it and I don't think management appreciates the awesome sounds that this bike can make. I'm hoping to find a pair of slip-ons that will make my bike sound unique and hungry but not quite as loud as a bike with straight pipes while still offering no restriction to the airflow which exists in harmony with the up jetting I did last winter and the pod air filters I replaced those huge boxes with. I tried putting the old mufflers that were on it when I purchased…

My low beam recently burned out of my 81 xs400 headlight. Will a 77 or 78 fit this too? I'm fairly certain all of these 7" diameter lights from the classics are interchangeable, but i don't want to lose my cash!

I recently bled the brakes of my 81 xs400 and it's the first time they've been bled in 20+ years ( found the bike in a barn a year ago). I didn't have a bleed kit so i roughed it a bit. I disconnected the fluid line at the caliper and drained all the black mess out. I seal it back up, added the new stuff and ran it through. I pumped it through the bleeder valve then. I sealed everything back up and the pressure seemed to have dropped a bit. Stopping felt smoother though. However, now there's a leak coming from somewhere when I press the brake hard and it doesn't look like either the bolt for the fluid line for the bleeder valve. I'm gonna try the baby powder trick t…

So I think my handlebars on my 81 XS400 are pretty sloppy. There are four rubber bushings under the handlebar clamp, and it doesn't seem to matter how tight I make the nut underneath, the handlebars wiggle front to back fairly freely. So, I figured the old rubber must be fatigued, and picked up some new mounts from mike's XS...only to find the new ones even looser...hah... I was wondering if maybe some additional washers under the nut would help tighten down more. I put a short breaker bar on the ratchet to try to get some extra torque. I really don't know what to do other than maybe glue the damn things in. I mean, I can appreciate trying to dampen some vibration…

I bought a 1979 DT 250 and the carb was all messed up. As I was taking the carb apart I found that the previous owner had screwed down both air screws. The bike needs trouble shooting, but first I need to know what the factory settting on the screws is first. Any help on the settings will be gratefully appreciated.

I am trying to get a '78 xs400 running again. What is the bare minimum I need to get this running electrical wise? I don't plan on using the electric starter and believe it is dead anyway. Also, the right handlebar switch has been cut. What wires need to be switched together for the starter? The Red/White and Brown? Also, what as far as safety switches are there that would preven spark? I can get 12v to the coils by switching the red/white and brown on the right handle switch harness together. I have them on a switch. But i don't seem to be getting any spark. Thanks.

Hey all, hope all is well. Had a question for someone familiar with this. I need to replace the points and condensers on my RD200. I went to the local Yamaha place and they don't see any being made for my 200. However they have them for a RD250. I was wondering if the points and condensers could be used on my 200 even though they are for a 250. I love this bike to death but I hate how I can never find parts for it lol. She is my pride and joy and I want to get her back on the road ASAP! Thanks in advance for any and all help you could help me with. I really appreciate it. Take care.

So my front fork is leaking, not a lot and definitely seeping out. I am wondering how hard for a 1st timer to do so? Do I need any special tools to get the job done?? I searched around this forum and find some bit and pieces but nothing really specific. thanks

What is the correct setup of the wires for the right handlebar switch? The harness has been cut from the switch and the switch is broken anyway. The wires I have going to it are this: Red/White Brown Brown/White Red/Yello Blue Blue

I am on the road to Jacksonville FL with the Green Machine, my 1978 Yamaha XS 400. Only made 240 miles today as it rained the whole way through the State of Georgia; I am holed up for the night at a hotel at the junction of US 441 and I-20. Bike ran like a champ, just seeped more oil than usual, but I can live with a little under 1/2 quart leakage for 230 fairly hard miles considering how little I have in this bike (I think most of it's leaking out the tach drive and valve adjustment plug/bolts). Bike ran like a champ all day with a minor exception. Observations follow: -Never. Leave. Home. Without. Rain. Gear. -US129 even through GA is a VERY curvy road; I w…
