Can this be replaced with the cam cover in place, or am I going to have to pull the engine to replace an $5 part?

Hello all, Had this posted in the workshop then wondered if I had posted in the wrong section. So here goes. Due to the lack of Rs100 forks avaliable I obtained a set of RXS forks. All seems ok.Mudgaurd position is slightly different. Also the Rs had a long spacer which was clamped at the end of the fork.To stop the wheel moving along the wheel bolt but I cant find it to calculate the size I need with RXS forks. The RXS does not have this as the end of the fork as it is all one part.. Anyone know the dimenstions of the spacer for the RXS or the RS100. If I have the RS100 dimentions I can work out the dimentions needed. I have a daughter hassleing me , she wan…

hi, thought i'd let yous know how its getting on. just about finished changed the ignition from points to electronic finished the wiring and got all the chrome bits rechromed, stuck a pair of amal mk2's on it and gave it a kick, hey presto, good things come to those with patience and a big hammer. it's gone from this to this and this its put years on me lol. now though its started blowing oily smoke from the left cylinder, valve stem seals i'm guessing.. new it wouldn't just be easy.

Just wondering if anybody had seen or found a replacement for the stock disc brake calipers of the XS400? I don't like the huge stoke calipers as they hide a lot of the wheel and look pretty ugly. Was wondering if any of the smaller Brembo's or such like match up? This isn't a question of performance, just cosmetic really...sad I know... Caddy

I run 15W40 Rotella T diesel oil, Cheap and has zinc in it. Not the subject. Question for the forum, though, is has anybody tried Lucas oil stabilizer in either an XS400 or an XS650? The bottle says you can run 10% in a wet-sump bike like an old Yam, but I want to know if it will help with my many oil leaks and possibly quieten things down a bit. I don't have any profound engine issues; bike turns easy starts relatively easy, I just don't like all the OHC valvetrain noise that a mill with 28K will have, and I would think the Lucas would stick to the top end and protect the cam and "bearings" at startup better than even my 15W40 does. I wouldn't think more than 100-150cc a…

  7. It's my first bike and I got it for 900 bucks with only 11,265 miles on it. The guy I bought it from said that the back tire had a slow leak and my dad rode it about five miles back to our house with no problems. I wanted to get an idea of how bad the leak was so I filled the tires up to the pressure indicated in the Haynes shop manual (26 in the front and 28 in back). A little over one week later I checked the pressure and the front was down to 19 and the back was down to 23. I wasn't planning on having to replace both tires and I was wondering if somebody could give me an idea of how much the tires are and about how much it will cost to get them put on and balan…

Is there anyone on here that can help and take a tape measure to their RD for me. I have got some headlamp brackets that I am putting on Ebay but I am not sure whether they are of an RD400 or an XS500 and from memory the gap is different. Thanks in advance for any help

  9. how strange the change from brass floats to plastic Im changing out the brass floats from my 78 Yamaha XS 400's Mikuni BS 34 carbs to plastic floats purchased from www.mikesxs.net.( $12 each versus $50 for the brass through the local shop ). I figure they should be interchangeable, These plastics are used on later 650 models which switched to the 34's from the 38. I saw some brass on the site but for the 38 and the bowls looked differently shaped. I notice the float heights for brass are 27mm and for plastic its 22mm. Is the height different for the 400 model mikuni 34's or do they just drop in at the correct height. Anybody ever done this, it would seem a pretty…

  10. Well to get straight to the point I just bought a 1978 XS400 for $20 from some guy in the pennysaver. He said it started and ran before he parked it 8 years ago. I want to get her running again and after giving her a good look over I've noticed it's not going to be as easy as I had hoped (is it ever?). So my first question is, does anybody happen to know a good website here in the states (Closer to California the better) that I could get some parts from? Just so I can kind of get a starting total of what it's gonna take to at least get the bike in putting around condition. Thanks in advance, I'm sure I'll be coming back here a lot and bugging the crap out of all of you…

I am looking to get rid of the battery on my 1973 ct175 I have heard you can fabricate a minimalist wiring harness straight from the magneto, one lead directly to the ignition coil, and another to a voltage regulator mounted under the seat that passes through a fuse then splits off into two leads, one that goes directly to the brakelight switch, and one the goes to a manual switch that powers the headlight and taillight, Has anyone done this? I need help with how to do this to make it into a "naked" bike. Thanks for your time and help!

I am modifying a 1974 TX500 to use a rear disc brake using a 76 RD400 as a guide. Here's the problem: In all my cross referencing I've found the RD uses a caliper that is the same part number as the TX front caliper (which I have many of). The RD connects the rear brake line directly to the caliper with a banjo bolt- The brake calipers that I have collected are fronts of a TX ( same part number as the RD rear)- The TX caliper will not accept a banjo bolt they are setup to connect using pipe with a tapered threaded connector. The tapered hole will not accept the banjo bolt- What am I overlooking? They are the same part # but it doesn't work. Any thoughts would really …

I need to know what size bolts they are so i can get new ones. the ones on mikesXS are too big. anyone know size, or a site that sells them? also, any recomendations for removing them before i ilet a local machinist drill them out? it's a 1976 XS500 thanks

I have a really nice restored XS250C. It runs OK but when throttle is closed the engine revs drop slowly which makes changing gear etc interesting !! Idle speed is set to 1200rpm but it only holds that when its hot i.e. after a good run. Everything looks OK, ignition is set up right, - plugs are OK, running slightly rich on both cylinders perhaps but not too much. Is there anything simple to check out. I'm considering a full carb strip but am unsure what to actually check. Carb butterflies snap shut when the throttle is released so is there something else? Do the carbs need synchronising. I'd appreciate any help / advice !!

Most XVS's works synchronously when IDLE but mine wont work that, wynchronisation is okay, but when IDLE times to times stucks and then goes faster, then slows again. sparks is okay, mixture is 1.5 turns, valves is 0.1 intake, 0.14 out take. does anybody knows about idle sensor and setups of this sensor?

So if the bike is not charging the battery well or at all, then where would I go from there? Replace the rectifier? A new problem for me, advice appreciated. Also, the previous owner put in pod filters, and I'd like to know what jets to get for it or just put the original air box back in which he gave me.

  18. yep. paid $50 for it. has a strong motor, but a compromised frame due to excessively raked front end and a wider than acceptable rear wheel. The engine is the real winner. it is the front bike in this series of pics.

Hi, First time I've posted on the forum. I'm struggling to try and sort out the wiring on my 81 DT175MX. I can't find the right ignition switch. After buying two, I'm wondering if the harness is from another bike. There's a 4 wire block with red, brown, black and white, black, which is the ignition and engine stop, and theres a 6 wire block that goes back to the light switch, indicators and horn. The colours on both the new ignition switches dont match. Any advice would be appreciated.
