For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by christoph21,

Would all of the 7" round headlights from 1981 Yamahas be compatible with each other (Maxims, other XSs and so on)? I have a burned out low beam and can't find a used replacement for my exact bike and the OEM part is WAY too expensive. Quick link to the part diagram. 2. Hi all, I seems to have a lot of minor problem with the bike so please pardon me. The 2 lights has never work since I got the bike. I tested the continuity on the 6 pin and seems like the Oil Press (Black/Red). wire has no continuity at all. Will that be the oil press. switch or the harness? My 2nd Q. is if I leave it this way, will it do any harm? Thanks

Hi All, I need a new rear tyre and am unsure what size I can go up to. Obviously I want to make it look a little more sportier with a fatter tyre. The size on there now is 160/60/18 is this the biggest I can go to. Regards Jay

I am rebuilding my bs34 carbs and i am trying to get the pilot jet and my manual says to use a tapered rod to remove it but i don't understand what they mean by doing that. I would think if you push to hard then you would just push it in harder. If anyone has some suggestions that would be great.

Investigating problems with the 1978 Yamaha XS500. Currently know of one locally with about 25,000 miles and it has a 100 percent leak down one cylinder. Seems that the exhaust valve is pretty much toast. I am trying to find out if this is a common problem for this vintage of the XS or maybe just on the 500 of this era? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Hey there =) The names Alex. 18 years old and addicted to two strokes. After a set of new tyres on my CZ inspired new-found confidence in my riding, I've been practicing my cornering for hours on end, Chugging round and round on roundabouts with increasing speed. But I realised that the CZ was a TERRIBLY bad bike for handling when I was introduced to the YB100. My friend realised I was in a mess once my CZ kicked the bucket (about 2 weeks ago), and decided to give me the YB100 as long as I paid him £250 back over time. Obviously I agreed =) Frame is a little rusty, the paint job however, Is immaculate! The seat has two rips, But other than that, she's a beauty. …

Just bought a styling 73 RT1 for a crisp Hundo. The guy that I got it from said that it wouldn't come out of nuetral. So I thought lets see if it would run before I dink around with the trans problem. I cleaned out the tank and put some fresh gas in, added oil, and kicked it over. Little did I know that it infact came out of nuetral. So as I was kicking it to try and start it, it went into gear and the rear tire was moving. Any suggestions on where to start. If you put the clutch in it won't roll something is not right inside the trans. Help a vintage guy out Please.....

So my 82 Maxim 400 seems like has been leaking fork oil for a while with its previous owner. I have been actively riding the bike for only 2 weeks. Other than not very good looking it doesn't affect handling and braking. I am thinking it may even leak out most of the oil already because the other day I push down the front and it won't bounce back. I already ordered the oil and dust seal and should arrive anytime soon. I am wondering should I order a pair of new forks altogether. Thanks

Does anyone know where I can buy a 1982 750cc yamaha maxim, reasonably priced. I am in California and can travel ... have friends who would drive with me to get it and ride it back to San Diego.... so it would need to be road worthy. Thanks Nelby

Hey All, My first post here. Thanks for having me. My bike is a '76 XS500C. BACKGROUND: So, down to business: I recently had a break down on the way up a twisty mountain road here in VT when I shifted into a false neutral between 3rd and 4th during a pass. Over-revved the motor, and blew out 3 of the 8 valve tappet adjustment screws on the rocker arms. Limped her up and down the mountain, got closer to town, tire locked up as expected. Grabbed clutch and coasted her into a country store to call a buddy. FIRST STEP: This was all two weeks ago. Since then I pulled the valvecover... Found 2 of the 3 adjustment screws, and 3 lock nuts... That's right, 1 screw is M…

Hello, I'm new here and come across this forum. I just got a 67' Bonanza 180cc and the cylinders are gone. What I mean by this is the piston clips failed and gouged the cylinders past the point of being bored out. So, I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get new/used cylinders or sleeves for this bike. Thanks, fletch Denver, Colorado

just wondering if anyone knows if an RD 350/400 motor can be fairly easily swapped into on XS 400 frame. i know with some fab anything can go into anything. The rd motors look pretty small so there should be no problem for clearance, just maybe change a motor mount. ??? has anyone tackled this before?

I've just bought this very nice motorbike, but I have a problem I just need help to solve. I could understand, that only the flash light indicators didn't flash when I used the signal to turn, since the flashlights in the rear wasn't there, so yesterday I did start looking for the flasher relay and the wires, so I could get 4 new flash lights on the motorbike. But I couldn't find the relay and there was only the small wires on the front flash lights, with no connection at all, I think that the flasher relay should be seatet under the the fueltank, because I found an old rubber holder there, but I'm not sure at all. I've been looking on several wire diagrams, but …

I know that this isnt a Yamaha bike, but you guys (and gals) are always very helpful, and I would really like to get this sorted out so that my wife can start riding this bike. Well, I have changed all of the fluids (except brake) on the 81 kz305 I just bought my wife, but have ran into a problem. Here is some back story: The bike was "running fine" before it was parked around this time last year. The bike has not been started since then, and had barely been touched. I brought it home, removed the old fuel from the (lined) gas tank, removed and cleaned the carbs with compressed air (pulled the bowl off and removed the jets to blow them out), changed the oil and f…

I have a 1979 or 1980 DT175. I'm trying to figure out which model year I have. The manufacture date is 6/79 but I'm not sure if that means its a 1980 model year or if it is indeed a 1979 model year. Also what type of oil do I need for my DT? My DT has been in a garage for about 10 years and I'm attempting to resurrect it. Thanks gad_fly
