Alright, i'm hoping this is my last thread of this type for a long time. The bike is so close to running properly, but its not. If i let it sit for a while, or cover the carb openings and push the starter a few times to draw fuel through it will start. It will run beautifully for about 5 seconds, reving freely as you adjust the throttle, then it just dies, nothing you can do. Repeat the waiting game or covering teh carbs, and it will repeat this . I know this points towards a fuel starvation issue, but i can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong. carbs have been cleaned quite a few times. All jets are set to stock. Needles have not been touched by me ever. Flo…

Hey Guys, So, I'm working on my old XS500, this being the same bike I posted about earlier with the missing tappet adjustment screw and bad vibrations. As expected, the screw wound up somewhere bad: the LH crankcase cover. Destroyed the balancer chain, broke the idle shaft bracket into 3+ pieces, and sheared the teeth right off the balancer drive sprocket that is built into the crankshaft. The helpful soul who responded to my last post mentioned that I could run w/o a balancer. Is this a crazy idea? My other, and more preferred option is to replace the crankshaft and get that balancer spinning again. I've already got a replacement balancer chain and idle shaft…

Not sure i noticed this before, when I timed the left cyl it was on the LF (left fire) mark as per manual. When I go to time the right side, its on the RT (right timing) which is for the valves. I can't get near the RF mark and left it on the RT. It runs fine, but I need to know how this could happen, ive search my brain and its not comming up with the goods any ideas anyone? drewps

  6. It was my first time arranging something like this or making a long haul out these twisty roads on the bike, and everything went great. There was my beat-up old xs400, a buddy on a '79 KZ650, a 97 BMW R1100, and a local cop on a Vulcan 800. Here's the route we took: http://tinyurl.com/olq8d2 Yup, we went down one of the twistiest parts of SR 555, aka "the Triple-Nickel". If you google that, you'll find lots of stories on that road. It's about as challenging as the Tail of the Dragon of NC, except there's no traffic. My main focus was on SR78 though. It's much smoother and you could hold some speed thru the corners with confidence. 555 is a bit twistier, but it…

Hi I have just bought two XS 500 b's.... I notice a couple of new people have this model too. I know the bike had its problems back in the day so having two should keep me on the road!!! I want to put one back standard and go Brat style with the other, I hope to pick the experts brains at every opportunity!

My front master cylinder on the XS 500 is leaking oil all over the place. It drained the container on two brakes and the entire handlebar got a big oily mess. Now I wonder if I can use a RD 400 front master cylinder instead? I can get a completely working kit for about 90 usd and a rebuild kit for my XS 500 cylinder would cost me around 65 usd plus taxes. Is it the wrong way to go, would you renovate the old one instead? I am going to keep it but I need the bike up and running soon again. Was thinking also if there is something more that is wrong with the cylinder since it leaks so fast that a rebuild kit might not fix it? Suggestions please

I own a 1980 xs400 special, and recently i'ved encountered a little problem with the clutch, once i start the bike and after warming up i attempt to put the bike in any gear and it will go into gear but the bike will jump into gear, it will be like putting the bike into gear without engaging the clutch lever. And will cut the engine. I'ved checked the clutch adjustment by the book but no matter how many times i try the adjustment it will still do the same thing, please help... Thanks. The clutches and plates with cable were recently intalled.

  12. I have stumbled on to your site, very interesting. I happen to have a 1978 XS 500 E in original condition (with exception of newer tires). This Yamaha may be for sale, what kind of interest would there be for this bike?

  13. Here are all the issues I am having - The right cylinders exhaust pipe runs about 60 deg HOTTER than the left at all times - The right cylinder missfires at idle (ONLY after its fully warmed up, it idles perfect when I first start it up untill about 10-15 mins later) - I have it idling at 1500 and sometimes it dies at that (again only after its warmed up) Carbs have been FULLY dissembled and cleaned TWO times now. , new plugs are in. Any ideas? I have messed with the lean/richen screws but had no luck, timing is good, I had it idling perfect for about a week and this popped up, also did a cylinder leakdown test thinking maybe it was a head gasket but that a…

I'm trying to get the screw adjuster off, (never heard of it). If you look at this diagram, it is number 23 on the clutch diagram. It won't just turn like a regular screw. Is there some kind of trick to this type of screw? Hopefully it is something easy that I haven't tried. Also, I'm trying to get off the big bolt, Number 10 on the same diagram. It is on like a son of a gun. Suggestions? Thanks for your help. Link below: http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycl...0b-1975/o/m7402

My headlight's low beam is for sure burned out and I think that it was unrelated to my new problem. Now, the hi-beam has flickered a few times and has not worked for a little bit once (until i revved the engine up, then it came alive again). I know that a flickering headlight is commonly a stator problem but I just want to double check. If so, do I need to get just the outer stator coil? Thanks again BTW, I do have 4 aftermarket turn signals in as well. They work at higher revs but tend to stay on constant at idle rpms but that isn't always the case. I can live with that but I hope that's not affecting other things. Ugh, ELECTRICITY!!

I'm a newb to being a motorcycle mechanic and could use some advice. I got a dt400 and have gotten it running. the problem is the clutch. I can get it into gear, but the clutch won't go in all the way to disengage. (for example, I can put into first gear, but when I engage the clutch the bike still won't roll freely). I tried to just adjust the cable, but still not good enough. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello Everyone, My names, Gene. I'm a newb at restoring classic bikes. Just picked up a 81" xs400. It doesn't run, but I only paid $200 so... Everything looks like its still there. It hasn't been registered since 1986! Well anyways, my plans are to cafe it out. In my cafe'ing efforts, I'd like to change out the stock rims to 18" spokes all around. What should I be looking for that would be compatible? I am also looking for a good place to buy a longer gas tank w/ knee indentations, a rear seat replacement, and clip-ons. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am planning to tear the bike down to the frame and slowly restore one section at …
