78 XS 400. When I go full throttle no matter what rpm/gear at about 6,000 rpms it sputters/hesitates for about 2-300 rpm then pulls fine after that, does this mean I am lean or rich or something else? My idle is perfect and the throttle response from 1200 rpm+ is awesome right now. Thanks!

Yeah.. so I can go for like 10 minutes or more of good riding, then it can't idle and stumbles and dies. It'll start back up and go for a short time. The longer you wait for it to cool, the more time you can get riding again. But not for long... I previously thought it was a fuel level problem, as the right carb had a way high fuel level for some odd reason and that plug looked black/wet when it wouldn't keep running. I thought it might be flooding it once it got warmed up. So, I fixed that... and got riding just long enough to get far enough away to have a long walk/push home. I checked the spark plugs, and both look brown and OK. The fuel levels look OK in b…

Having finally gotten my bike all tuned and running well, I decided it needed to be put to the test - 4 days of riding in and around Shenandoah National Park in the Appalachian mountains. The main road through the park is over a hundred mile long, windy and hilly, surrounded by trees, wildlife, and occasional breathtaking views, snaking along high ridges the whole length of the park. I have to say that the bike handled it all pretty well - these were roads where light and maneuverable are an asset, though camping gear strapped to her made it a bit more unwieldy then usual. Fortunately, I packed light. Averaged just shy of 60 mpg, and had no real mechanical issues. …

Like the title says, I am experiencing a complete loss of power above 6k RPMs if i twist 1/2 throttle or beyond - it wont even rev past 7k. If I apply less than half throttle, it will happily go to redline. I have adjusted my floats to spec, and have tried it with floats adjusted to 25mm. I put in new main jets (135s), and cleaned+synced the carbs again but it still doesnt want to rev. The bike is running well other than that. any suggestions are greatly appreciated

I'm trying to bring a '78 XS4002e back from the dead. Someone has screwed around with the fuse box wiring and I am trying to fix it. Here's what wires I have at the box. Can someone tell me which need to go together? Red(From Battery) Red(To Headlight, MAIN) Red/Yellow Red/White Red/White Brown Brown Brown Obviously the Red goes to the Red for the power to the MAIN switch(which works) The manuals I have found online don't show the fuse box very well for a complete re-wire like this. Thanks.

My father in law got a 78 xs400-2e last week and i finally got it all cleaned up and running so i thought. It blew a headlight fuse and a main fuse. So i went over today and started doing some checking and found that if i do a ohms resistance test on the fuse box from the ground to the fuse block im getting no resistance anywhere meaning that i have a problem with a bare wire somewhere right? well i pulled most every part of the wiring harness out today and found nothing that looked bad. has anyone else had this problem? if so what did you find? I only had a little cheap tester there today i didnt have mine so ill take it back when i go over there thursday to look a…

Hey. New to the club. I just purchased a 1982 Yamaha 400 Maxim for close to nothing and it has a few problems. This is my first bike and I am totally unfamiliar with any mechanics or bikes of any kind. 1) Bike runs really roughly. Previous owner cleans the carbs but believes they need to be rebuilt or replaced. Can I do this myself? I am mechanically inclined and with a good manual I'd be confident (considering the shop wants 200 just to clean and rebuild them. 2) Bike dies when the clutch is engaged. Cuts off. No idea why. 3) Bike dies when put in gear, even with clutch pulled in. No idea why. 4) Bleed caliper(sp?) on front brake is broken. How hard is it to …

So my 82 XS400 Maxim seems to need more Tender Loving Care than what I have expected. The front brake is really bad. I need to squeeze the lever all the way to get minimal braking. I squeeze the lever to see if there is anything move at the caliper and nothing seems to move. One of the master cylinder cover screw is SO stuck I don't even know how to get it off. Therefore I'm think about replacing the whole front brake system. I want to know which master cylinder as well as caliper will fit my bike. Thanks!

I just buttoned up my XS400, turning it into a cafe racer. I am a little concerned about the stopping power. It doesn't come close to stopping on a dime, and I was wondering what componenet is most likely responsible for this. I can really pull on the brake lever and it won't lock up, perhaps I have ABS I am sure I have the air bleeded from the system. I also put it in new brake pads and replaced the seals in the caliper What should I replace to get some more stopping power, brake lines, rotors, piston, cylinder reservoir? I was thinking it may be my brake line, as it is the original and after placing some lower bars I need to snake the line aroun…

The bike had 2 owners before me. The original owner barely rode it then tipped it and hurt himself so he stored it for 7 years before selling it to the guys I bought it from. Has 8970 actual miles on it but the bike is a little beat up looking. And its running really bad. Actually, it broke down on me like 4 blocks down the road after I bought it. When I first looked at it, it ran fine but when I came to pick it up, it had the following issues... Idled insanely high. Even with choke off. Flooded easily. When throttled, the rpms wouldn't drop back to idle. The throttle went back into idle position and the cable was working properly but the rpms wouldn't drop unless i…

newbie here. just want to thank everyone in advance. i am new to the vintage bike restoration and was looking for some advice. . after spending hours on the playstation everyday having absolutely no interest in anything in the garage, i brought it upon myself to buy 4 "vintage" dirtbikes/enduros to try and restore together. the first is a 1975 yamaha dt100. picked her up for $75 and spent about an hour to get her running. runs great, starts with one kick, but needs a clutch. this bike is too big for him so i found a 1978 yz80. my real question is what is this thing worth? anything at all? tried and tried to research history. all i found is it is the first year …

Hi all Bike is running great after months of work but rev counter stops working from about 4-5000 RPM. Not precise coz my head is up. Engine is reving past that, and I'm just using my ears to change gear as you should anyway. There is no cable on these counters, so must be an electrical/connection fault, but it seems strange that it works normally up to that point. It's like the needle is jammed (its not) Has anyone had a similar problem? I dont suspect it is particulary specific to this bike. Would the CDI have anything to do with it? It would be nice to know when red line is approaching at least. p.s. after 150kms of running in, I let her accelarate freely tonight …

Like title says, I had the charger on my battery and moved the gas tank on top (I know) went to start the bike and it started but as soon as it did the gas tank shifted and sparks flew from the terminals and the bike died, I still have spark but the battery is VERY weak now and it wont turn over for very long before dieing. Did I fry me battery or something else? It wont start now either. Also all turn signals are still bright along with the break light, someone help me out please...

Good day all, This is my first post on this site because I just acquired what I believe are 2 mid 70's DT dirt bikes. One is a 250 and the other is a 400. I'm 99% sure of that but I'm hoping someone on this forum can verify it for me. Here's the serial numbers: 250 Frame and Engine: 450-223630 450 Frame: 501-006513 450 Engine: 501-006518 I hope someone can help. Cheers, The Menno
