I recently purchased a 1979 XS 1100. Was in pretty good shape except that carb 1 was puking gas out of the air intake. Have since taken care of that problem and it now is running very good. Problem is that I can shift up to 2 gears up and 1 down without a problem. Up shifting I have to wait about 15 seconds or so before it will go to the higher gear. If I don't wait long enough the shifter just feels like there are not any more gears to go to. Wait a few seconds and then it will click to the next gear. I can usually get it to down shift 1 gear sometimes 2. Then I have to stop, reach down with my hand and work the shifter to get it back down to 1st. Also I don't think the…

  5. Hi All, I have recently rebuilt the above engine and now find that 1 cylinder gets very hot very quick. Also that same cylinder pumps out a much more powerful blast from the exhaust. Anybody got any ideas where to start looking? I have tried to sync the carbs quickly but need to do a more thorough job. Any help gratefully recieved Gary

I have an 81 xs400. Which stock has a 16" mag rim. I'd like to know if anybody out there knows if an 18" spoked rear wheel of a 77 xs650 will fit without any swing arm modification?

Hello I'm from ohio, (long story) I just got a xs400s and it is in good condition but as I went to pick it up (from a preacher none the less) he pulled me off to the side and said he just made some mods that would really get some power out of it . Took it around the block and all seemed great so I paid for it and took it home. After about 6-7 miles I noticed it started to backfire alot finally chugging all the way I got it home and noticed it was really hot and would not start until it was cold then it acted fine again for short distances only. Two weeks ago I was about to give up and sell or junk it then my neighbor walked up to me and said he would check it o…

  8. I've got a '78 XS400 that I am trying to get running. I was cleaning the carbs today and got through the first one great. When it came time for the second, as i went to remove the idle/mix screw I found out that a previous owner had tightened the mix screw in too far and the tip is stuck in the hole. It is broken off from the screw and jamed in there. Any ideas on how i could remove the tip? It seems very stuck. The whole carb is soaking in carb cleaner right now. Where might I find a set of carbs? I checked ebay. No '78 xs400 carbs. What other years or models will fit? Or is there another alternative if I have to buy new carbs. I'm not looking to spend a whole bunch.

Ok, well I just bought a DT100 a few days ago. It's orange with "100" in a black and white vertical stripe on the tank. It's mechanically all there, over the years previous owners have removed the headlight, turn signals, spedo, brake light, ignition switch. That doesn't bother me I'll never run it on the road. Otherwise it's all there. It's been sitting for a few years. Engine turns over fine, the carb opens/closes freely, the clutch, although it doesn't seem to disengage does pull and return freely. I have no spark. The woman that sold it to me tells me her husband thought it needed a new shear key between the crank and flywheel. I've never seen these go ba…

Hi, NOOB here. I have an 81 XS400 I did a ground up restoration of but I still need a set of pipes. The exhaust I have now consists of MAC slip ons and the original down tubes which were cut off just in front of the crossover pipe. I'm no fan of the MAC 2-1 for looks, sound, price or quality (the MAC mufflers I have now are losing the chrome as I type) so I was hoping there would be any other way to get a set of 2-2 pipes for this bike. Alternatively, if anyone has a nice set of pipes lying around PM me please.

so I recently got parts in to fix my carb problems, only to learn i now have spark issues. One coil is dead and the other going. I want to replace the whole spark system, however can't find what kind of caps to get. I threw a multimeter on the existing caps and got a 9.x kohm reading, so i think they are 10k resistive caps, can anyone confirm this? Would there be any benifit to going with a different cap? Bike is a 76 XS500. thanks

thought I'd tweek my ignition timing with the strobe and the tick over went down. started raising it and it felt a bit stiff, all of a sudden the thread let go and know I've stripped the fine thread on the carb body AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!! luckily I've got a spare body ( unlike mine) but I'll have to restore it if its going on me bike. MORAL: don' piss about with something if it ain't broken, as it soon wil be there got that off my chest

Here's a pic of my finally completed 81 XS400 racer. The camera was goofy and only one picture was saved but it's a goody. I'll get more tomorrow hopefully. Rides NICE!!! I restored it to factory default first then redid it again. However, I didn't take a before everything pic. It was in really rough shape. It had been sitting in a barn since 1987 (two years before I was born even!) It had an extremely worn gas tank, bent handlebars, missing side plates, broken carbs, worthless tires, etc. I replaced the usual for a cafe conversion; seat, bars, signals, 2into1 exhaust etc. I've done all the work myself minus the upholstery on the seat. I appreciate all the help …

looking for exhaust options for my 78 XS400... either going for the 2-into-1 MAC full system or just graft some aftermarket shorty silencers on my stock head pipes... any thoughts on the MAC system? quality? sound? performance? also, i do not see a mounting point for the silencer from the MAC system... does it just hang off of the header, or, does it attach somewhere that i am not seeing? i will be cutting the frame and am holding off until i figure out the exhaust and if i need any mouting points for the silencers... thanks for any and all info. I've been browsing for an XS1100 for a new project and I've found one for the right price I believe ($350 US). The bike was a daily driver until 2nd gear became broken. The bike is a 78 and I've browsed ebay for a set of gears. They're very reasonable at about $75 US for main axle with gears but they're from 1979 and 1980. I'm wondering if these will be compatible with this 1978? Thanks!

Hi guys, I'm new here, and I'm a total rebuild noob, but I plan to learn as I go. I picked up an extremely rough 1981 XS400 today for $150, and it's my new winter/spring project. I have some pics from a phone camera: http://picasaweb.google.com/asittler/XS400...feat=directlink As you can see, pretty dang rough. It sort of starts (except for the fact that there's no gas in the currently-cracked tank) but doesn't run (currently... By next summer, that'll change). The handlebars are DEFINITELY gonna go asap. Anyone got any suggestions on what would work comfortably and add a sorta cafe-like look but without being impossible to ride on a fairly long (~5hr) ride? …
