The wire harness for this bike has been chopped and spliced for a few rounds. I managed to get the harness to what I thought was 100%, however here is the problem: Problem: With key in the ignition, the rear brake light is constantly illuminated. And when I select the right or left rear flashers, from the handle bar switch, both right and left signal indicators have low illumination, if any at all and the rear tail light pulsates. Here is a link to a video of it happening: Video of problem My theory: Now all the lines match, strand for stand. I retraced the lines for continuous match of color code for a second time. There are two brown lines, …

HI! I found a GT-80 that has all the lights & turn signals, so I'm going to register it on the street just for the little runs around the neighborhood. I got no paperwork with it from the seller, so how do I go about determining what year and model it is? Obviously, I know the VIN. Does it tell any of this info? My bike has grey tank with red stripes, a bit like 1974 MX360. My 1974 MX 250 has same grey, but then yellow stripes, same style. I also have another GT80, but it's been painted over, I guess. Same problem. no paperwork and no clue what year & model. Furthermore, I'm a bit lost in what to model abreviation to use with my, what I believe is 1966 Ascot Sc…

  5. Hi, I am a new member here and I need help. I don't know much, if anything, about bikes. My clutch lever was almost at the top of its range so I tried to adjust it out to about midrange and after I adjusted it (at the clutch adjuster), it barely made a difference. Do I need a new clutch? The bike only has 3994 miles, so why would it need a clutch?! Is the Maxim the same as the xs 400e? I downloaded the manual but some stuff doesn't sound right. Please help me! Any and all info you have would be great. I just want to give my first bike the attention and love that it needs.

Hey, I am new here and a new owner of an 81 XS 400 Special. I bought the bike with only the header pipes, it runs but I know it's making it run lean and I was wondering if any of you know a cheap way to create come back pressure on the exhaust because as of the moment I don't have the money to buy an exhaust. Thanks,Jeremy.

AAAAAAAH!!! foook me! I lost my only set of keys to my bike. Whats worse - the bars were locked since it is sitting on the street. I am having trouble finding anyone in my area who has a blank key. I tell them that the bike is a '77 and I get the the 'oh sh!t' look. Several folks say they will make the key if I bring in the ignition but I would have to provide the blank. Anyone know where to get the key codes as this might make my search easier. Yam dealership here in Richmond VA is USELESS!(joint yam/honda dealer that only works on hondas) the only full service yam dealership went under a few months ago.

  12. My '78 DT250 wasn't flow any gas through the carb, so I took the bottom bowl off, cleaned out the gunk with carb fluid cleaner, dried and reassembled it. However the needle valve keeps slipping out when I slid the bowl back in. So I turned the carb sideways so that the needle doesn't fall out, and set all four bowl bolts in place. But as soon as I turn the fuel petcock on, within 6 seconds, I have gas streaming out of the vent near to the throttle screw along with pipe air vent at the bottom. What did I screw up? The needle valve sits in the recessed opening, just above arm float. And when the bowl fills up, it is supposed to push up the needle so that the fuel do…

I have an 82 XS400 with electronic ignition. The last time I had my bike running it was fine. It sat for about 12 days in the garage, battery unhooked most of it. I installed a new battery today (freshly charged) and it would not start, turned over and over and then one huge backfire. I pulled the left plug and had no spark. Here are the symptoms -I shorted the battery by accident to the frame while I was installing it. -Sometime I get a spark in the right cylinder, sometimes not. -When the right cylinder is working, if I swap the signal wires to the coils I will get spark in the left cylinder, none in the right. -After the starter runs and stops, there is a…

My '81 XV920RH leaks oil from the bottom of the crank case. Short of splitting the cases, is there any good way to seal the crankcase joint? I tried the recommended procedure of draining the oil, laying the bike on its side, cleaning the bottom of the cases and painting the joint with Yamahseal. Still leaks. Spitting the cases appears to be a major project needing several special tools. Is there any other approach that works?
