So I will be relocating the battery to the back hump really soon and since my battery has been neglected forever I was thinking of getting a new one. I read on some bobber forums that they just used a very small battery that is the size of your fist and it works? I currently have LED turn signals (will be adding LED tail light too) and changed the headlight to a 35/35w h4 bulb if that information helps any. I know a sealed battery will work but than I would have to make a fiberglass pan for it and have less space for the rest of the electronics since I am clearing the battery box and making the thing look clean.

Still working on my long time project. Finally got a XS360 seat and tank and the tank I can make work on the XS400 frame but the seat is another matter, can someone post some pics of their XS360 frames again? I need a pic under the seat this time. Also, is the rear fender and tail light the same between both models? In case no one knows, I'm using a late 70's XS400 special frame and engine and putting XS360 pieces on it to make it a little more sporty (also the same as the regular XS400, its just easier to call it a XS360 conversion since they basically all looked alike).

Need to get a new exhaust for my 1983 XS400RJ Seca, old one is all rusted through. So far I have found this one : Mac 2-1 Part #004-1103 and it states it will fit the XJ-400 Seca and Maxim, will it also fit on my XS400RJ? It can be found on this page http://nichecyclesupply.com/ProductDesc.aspx?code=804-1103&type=0&eq=&key=it Know the 1982 Seca xs400 is very different then the 1980 XS400, completely different engine, but what about the 1982 XS400RJ vs the 1982 XJ400 Seca? Would the exhaust header fit? Any help would be appreciated, since once bought it cannot be returned. Thanks In Advance.

I want to add a 12v power outlet to the bike so i can use a GPS for long trips. (my battery is abysmal.) Where is the best place typically to add it to the harness? What protections need to be taken? I'm not electrical genius, but i can work my way around a system. Ideally i'd like the outlet to be switched with the ignition so that i can't drain the battery when the bike is off. Any help is appreciated.

My headers are really not looking good. They are rusting, and very pitted. I plan on getting new ones, either trying to find some (not sure if 650 pipes will work), or having some made. Until i get new ones, what are opinions on finishing them. I'm going between cleaning them and painting with high temp paint, using a spray ceramic coating, or heat wrapping them. It won't be for performance reasons, just aesthetics. From what i've heard heat wrap can cause more rust and corrosion by trapping water. Thoughts on the best temporary method?

I have a fork dust seal missing on my 78 XS400, so decided to get rid of it, and install some fork gaiters instead ... and put on new non-rusty fork trim/badge and if got time, probably put in the steering stem bearings I hear improve handling this weekend (and of course at the end of this work, putting new fork oil)... I also bought some fork oil seals (yamaha part #1L9-23145-00-00) I was going to do it this weekend with some friends helping me out... So I had following questions... 1. Will the mikesxs xs650 fork gaiters fit the 33mm xs400 forks? 2. Should I buy any other gaskets (aka parts that are useless once they come off) if Im taking off the fork…

Recently bought a nice looking 1974 Yamaha TX500, despite reading reports of problems with balance chain and head cracking, but price was rightand overal condition is good. After cleaning the carbs it now seems to be running well and the bike feels like it will make a nice, relaxed "cruiser" with it's upright riding position and aftermarket fairing. I want to enjoy it for daily riding, so my question concerns the balance shaft and chain. The bike has 12,000 miles on it. Does the chain need adjusting often? Or replaced (I have a NOS one from eBay)? Did Yamaha make improvements later that can still be found and installed? Any other "issues" that should be looked at? Thanks…

My neighbor recently bought a 1981 xs400SH, it was running when he bought it. One morning it wouldn't start, so he asked me for help, I'm a car mechanic. I've never worked on a motorbike before, but on a 30year old carb'ed Yamaha, how hard could it be? I grabbed my battery jump pack and got it started. He took it for a quick spin up and doun the street, he came back pushing it and when it went over the curb, gasoline poured out the air filter boxes. I grabbed a drain pan and drainded the tank, I told him that the carb floats were probably stuck wide open. I told him I could easily fix that. I took the carbs off the bike, took them inside, to work on, removed the …

Now that I got the bike running, I gave back the keys, and now it stalls out while the owner is riding, both at idle and when he's accelerating. The voltage is 12.5 to 11.9 volts and it stays at that range no matter what RPMs the engine is at. When it was idling, I saw the RPMS slowly drop untill it died.I've checked the rectifier (diodes were good), the stator and the field exiter with my ohmmeter (both within the specs the Haynes manual said). The only thing I didn't check is the Voltage regulator (manual didn't give any specs). I'm really sure it's bad,and will be replacing it, but I'd like to know if the stalling is a symptom of a bad charging system, and would a bad …

I turned my bike off and it started dripping and I turned off the petcock to stop it. I guess if I have gas coming out of the left airbox while not running, its a float issue on that side?, like maybe its getting stuck? or could it be something else? Anyway just wondering what could be issue and what parts to buy since I have to buy air filter elements anyway today (just got my bike back from my mechanic and I guess even though he ultrasonic-ed the carbs, putting it back together he prob didnt do the left float correctly?). Thanks!

I have an 82 xs400 maxim I bought last year and have struggled with it since. Long story short - rusty gas tank - sealed with kreem - worked well - cleaned carbs - cleaned carbs again - cleaned carbs again - you get the idea. It had run really strong when I can get it started and keep it going but I have more issues when it sits longer. Being that I'm on a tight budget (and the carbs I have found are few and far between and expensive) I am going to try to replace the jets as the rest of the carb looks pretty good. I want to get rid of the rediculously inefficient looking airbox set up and put some pod filters on. I know this affects air fuel mixture which I'm pretty s…

I am working on re-furbishing a Yamaha XJ650 for a buddy of mine and he mentioned that the bike has an annoying habit of not wanting to start. The bike has had it's carbs rebuild 3 times, had the seals, manifold, fuel, and jets checked and seen more service then open road. And still the bike will start sometimes. My buddy said that often he had to pop the fuel line off, and open up the bowl screw on the right hand carb and blow on the fuel line while cranking over the starter. The bike often fired up and then he would have to quickly re-attache the hose and close the bowl screw before the bike stopped. The bike didn't care if it was warm or cold out or if it was hot or no…

I have just aquired a 1983 Yamaha YB100 This model was never imported to Canada or North America for that matter and info is hard to find. Over the next little while I will be needing help to get this bike roadworthy. (1) Does anybody know of a link to an online parts book. Speed & Sport (USA) & CMS (Netherlands) are no help I have only been able to access Yamaha North America. (2) I am considering purchasing the Haynes manual for this bike. Is it any good. (3) I have found what looks like a resistor under the tail light. It seems to be burnt out. Anybody know where I can get one or why I need it. (4) Any good sources of parts for Yamaha in the UK oth…

I have a 1980 XS650 Special and it will not charge its battery. I thought it was the battery because it was old, so I replaced it, but it was not the battery. Then I opened up the cover on alternator and replaced the brushes because they are cheap and easy to replace. That didn't fix it either. So now I want to test the other parts of the charging system like the stator winding, rotor, voltage regulator, rectifier (I think it and the regulator are all one part?) Anyways, does anyone have any details on how to test these things so I can isolate the problem. FYI, when I rev the engine I get about 6.5 volts trying to charge the battery (dead).

I recently traded my 1988 Yamaha FZ 750 for a 1985 Yamaha XJ 700 X Maxim plus a few other parts for the Maxim. I have to say I enjoy riding the Maxim a lot more than I did the FZ any way here's a couple pics. Let me know what you think.
