Last autumn, my 1981 xs400s stopped running after I changed oil. A week after we changed the oil, my dad drained it again and the new oil was pitch black after only one week. The spark plugs and wires are fine, carborators were thoroughly cleaned, so my dad says that changing the oil likely washed built up dirt off the valves and now they need to be re-adjusted. I lost the haynes manual that I had for this bike and similar models, but it wasn't very good anyways. If I could find the official manual online, would it tell me how to re-adjust the valves? I am a total novice when it comes working with engines and machines; the whole reason why I bought an old bike …

For me they are the ... . 1: By far the SRX 600 Beautiful, torquey, power, style and great handling . . . AND . 2: Next the RZ350 beautifully engineered rocket-bike with awesome sound on the track with race pipes . . . . Now that you know mine ... I ask you ... what are YOUR favorite classic Yamahas of "all time" . Rubber Side Down . Karen .

So i have been actively scanning this site for info that would help with this head scratcher that i have going through for a few months now. so far i haven't found anyone Else's thread that has shed any light. The bike: Recently the bike has slowly been holding less and less of a charge, until one day the bike dies on me. I pushed it back to the house and threw the battery on the voltmeter, and it was totally dead, considering the battery was 5 years old i decided to replace it. Brand new battery and no luck 20 minutes of riding and the bikes dead again. So i took it home charged it up and started the bike, i tested the alternator out put. 11.9 volts at idle and i ca…

Hello I picked up what i believe to be a 1964 Yamaha YG-1 on the weekend. I called Yamaha with the serial numbers (Y20864465) and they agreed on the date/model but with some uncertainty. I would like to make a restoration project out of it, but im not sure where to find information. Ive searched around and have not seen anything that looks like an official service manual, and to my surprise have not found any dedicated forums or websites for the bike. Has anyone been through this? owned or restored one? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Jake

Tried to search for this. Prefer actual book-in-hand, rather than download. For 78 XS400 2e. Is one or other preferred; seems that the Clymer is more year and model specific and am leaning to that (both even better). Thanks.

Hey all! So i am starting the process of installing a 18" wheel on the rear of my previously 16" wheel equipt 1979 xs400. Starting with my 18" used wheel i removed the old tire then position the wheel on my homemade wheel jig (axle and 2 jack stands). To find the wheel has under a 1/4" of run out left to right. Then i started to try to tru the wheel my self only to realize all 36 nipples to the spokes are pretty lose. Then i make some phone calls to some local shops that probably have a better idea on how to handle this more than myself. Well that is not the case. So anyone out there have any advice or knolege on this? Im gonna give this a go on my own. whats the…

I have recently rebuilt from top to bottom a Yam XS500C, 1977 vintage. The engine was totally stripped down and rebuilt step by step - I'd better point out here that I'm not a mechanic, I just take my time, follow the books and use a bit of 'common' The bike started on second push of the starter button - it's not running right , but I can work on the carbs and timing later. The major problem is that the oil pressure light stays on when running - Not good!! The 'book' says turn off the engine immediately, trace and rectify the fault - that's it I've tested the pressure switch - remove, compressed air blown in, multimeter to check circu…

I broke the brake lever on my bike tonight. I have an 82 Heritage Special, but when I look up parts for it I never seem to get the right thing. I went to http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs400sh-1981_model8826/partslist/ and looked at an 81 model and it seems to have the right lever. Yamaha no. 4L08392200 Does anyone know if Motion Pro makes a lever to match? I come up with 14-0506 as a match. I think 14-0510 is the cable version, mine has a disc brake.

Haven't had time in weeks to work on the '77/'78 XS400 got in early Apr. It's a IIE (2G5), Kick start only which makes this all the worse. Tentative on kickstarting it at first until letting rings soak in ATF. Turned it over and Compression After removng clutch cover, thought I'd slide the kickstart in to attempt to properly get the spring in place (with case cover removed). THEN, why not kick it once just to check out the spring action. Not cool. I BROKE my bike!! A chunk of the innermost kickstart insert hole busted apart and far, far away. At first the beginner blunder to end all. Way too embarased to even take an after picture of this disaster …

Quick question, how do you know if you have an XS400E, D, F, etc? Was gonna sell my bike to get another bike later, but went on vacation and someone hit my 1st motorcycle and ran. Can't leave my baby in that kinda shape so going to turn her into something nice. So asked my vintage mechanic (dont got time with new job to learn motorcycle repairin') to turn it into a streetstyle/cafe bike with some parts I got. Will post pics in a couple months . cosmetically: Think I'm adding a new seat/tank that I know will fit xs650/xs400, headlight/taillight, superbike handlebars/torismo grips (debated clubman bars but i won't find that too comfy), and fork gaitors, and …

I just inherited a 1981 Exciter 250 from a family member, free. I think the bike is ugly, but I also think it has potential to make a nice project for my girlfriend. I was curious to know what you guys thought about the bike. Are there any known issues that I should be aware about with these bikes? Are parts hard to find? I ask because I have learned the hard way with my XS500 that parts can be hard to find when a bike is rare. In searching the web it seems that the Exciter is not as rare. Anyway, I just want to hear your thoughts on this thing. Here's a Picture of the bike when I picked up yesterday. It needs a new seat, new bars, and it needs to loose some o…

Who is the greatest motorcycle racer of all time ... Here are a few names ... Kenny Roberts, John Surtees, Joey Dunlop, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer, Geoff Duke, Bob McIntyre, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Giacomo Agostini, Klaus Enders, Jarno Saarinen, Kent Andersson, Barry Sheene, Jim Redman, Bill Ivy, Jarno Saarinen ... of course there are more ... many would say the magnificent seven Barry Sheene ... or King Kenny the man who revolutionized racing by knee-dragging ... mine goes to John Surtees ... not only the only one to ever with both the car and motorcycle championships in the same year ... it is everything he has done for racing since then ... never giving up on the…

Hello New here and have a question. My wife's 86 700 fazer has been acting up this year. It is hard to start, dies out of the blue, and sometimes it dies when you put it in gear from neutral with the clutch disengaged. I am kind of leaning toward it being a fuel pump issue. I also think it might have something to do with the thermistor in the fuel tank because it wont run at all unless the selector switch is in the res setting, but that didn't affect it last year. The battery is also kind of weak, but I wouldn't think that that would have anything to do with the fuel pump once it was running, unless it does and I am missing something. Any help would be appreciated. …
