I am wondering if there are part numbers or metric sizes of the steering stem bearings and races on my 1982 XS400? I am hoping I can just buy the bearings off the shelf at a bearing place or parts store rather than going through a dealer. Not one of the parts I ordered for my bike from the local dealers has been correct yet, and they don't seem to know or care about old bikes. Let me know, thanks

  5. So I put my bike away for the entire winter and finally pulled it out today. I never owned a vehicle where I had to store it for an entire season so I never knew to put in special liquid if the fuel to prevent varnishing, or to disconnect the battery. When I started the bike I found out the battery was completely shot. I bought a new one, and they guy suggest and empty the tank, and start with fresh fuel which I did. Then I cleaned the carburetor once again very thoroughly, and I made sure the rubber connections to it are very very tight as to not leak any air. The first few kicks did absolutely nothing. (My electric starter doesnt work... I just hear something spi…

Well as for this weekend my test start and prototype intake manifold was a sucsess. Now to fine tune the jetting. The bike runs a bit rich. But has super throttle response. Bought a brand new vm34 mikuni from a fellow on ebay. So far the bike runs and starts. I will post pics in some days to follow. Anyone have any wiring diagrams on the 79' xs400 models that they could share? I want to take some short cuts in my build and modernize some of the wiring system.

Hi out there, I have a 1982 XJ 650 Maxim, I am unable to get the locking gas cap to unlock and am looking for some more ideas on how to reslove this. It will turn about an 1/8 of a turn and then stops. I am afraid to try and turn any harder than I have. Made sure I was pushing down on the cap while trying this too. It acts like the locking pins itself is froze up. Not sure and out of things to try. Thanks in advance for your helpful ideas.

Greetings. I've noticed some very knowledgable feedback from this websites members and since I'm now a Yamaha owner, I've got a question.. or two, since all I've ever worked on previous to yesterday is my 1985 Dodge 500. First of all, what gas/oil mixture should i be using? I've seen a more convincing post say 40:1, another 32:1.. does anybody know for sure? Secondly, the bikes previous owner, like a champion , ran it on straight gas. What kind of problems should I expect? He didn't use it alot, but it has been ran through at least a whole tank on straight gas. I've already emptied the tank and purchased a liter of 2stroke motorcycle oil the pep boys guy assur…

Hi Folks! I just purchased my first bike it's a 1980 400 Special. I'm a newbie when it comes to riding and don't know much about motorcycles at all. I have a few questions and would appreciate your help. My friend noticed that any small key could fit in the ignition and turn the bike on. Even a penny could start the bike and get it running. I was shocked at how easily this could happen and the thought of having my bike stolen that easily is scary. Do you have any suggestions to prevent this from ever happening? Is it a good idea to replace the ignition? Also my electric starter is quite weak and is not working very well. It's trying to turn the engine I can hear it …
