For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by johnsnownw,

Yeah, so when I took apart my carbs only one of them had the needle valve seat clamp. Is this a necessary part, or should I not worry about it? Thanks

Okay, So, now that I got a new battery she will start up just fine. The suggestion was made that I should seat my mixture screws and turn back 3.5 times. Well, I've done that and can get the bike to idle in neutral around 1200 rpm, but only when I tightened the idle screw quite a bit more than it had been before. Now the bike seems to be popping quite a bit, and idle rough. It also seems to knock quite a bit, when I don't think it did before this. It should be noted that I filled the tank with 92 octane fuel. Any suggestions? Aaron UPDATE: So, the knocking seems to be coming from the gas tank, in fact, if I move the petcock lever to RES, the knocking is l…

  3. Hello everyone, I'm sorry to bother you all with my issues but I've been watching the forum for quite some time and I could really use some help. Several weeks ago I was gifted a 1981 XS 400 Special. I don't know much about bikes but with some help from my friend we have since done the following: Replaced clutch springs & friction plates (shifts like a pro now) Repaired the kick-start (easy fix and it's fun to use) changed the headlamp assembly to a high end halogen (mmm light) Rebuilt and cleaned the carb Replaced the battery And that's about all I can think of... Well today me and my friend thought we finally had it! It seemed like it was running great…

I have an 82 XS400 I had my bike going today and it was running fine. I slowly got worse through the day until is started "chugging" and losing power at higher rpm. I took the carbs apart again thinking there was some new dirt, but went a step further than before. I pushed out the needle tube and it was filthy and plugged. Cleaned it up, cleaned the holes, etc. Put the carb back together and now it won't start! Took the float bowls off and checked the floats, noticed they were binding a bit so I cleaned out the pivots good. The float bowl lwvwl does not seem to be enough but the tangs are already bent some. Also, if I leave the bike to sit, fuel runs out of …

  5. Started by plain old dave,

Checked with Z1 Enterprises and they have an XS750 kit for only $21. Same BS34 carbs on both bikes, but @1 size larger jets I believe on them than the XS400. The bike mechanically is not stock; I have Uni foam pod air filters and the EMGO knockoff of the old Dunstall Decibel mufflers. Plugs look good with what I had before the carbs went belly up, and I would think 1 size up on the jets would help all round. Thoughts?

How do you guys remove these things? I have been using an impact driver to no avail. All I seem to be doing is destroying the screw heads. I've gotten 3 out of the 8 off, the others just won't budge. It's quite infuriating TBH. Aaron

Greetings all, I’m new to this group so I should probably start by introducing myself, my name is Kevin Donovan, and I live in Foster RI. I am mainly a Penton guy, but just picked up a 1973 AT3 125 and needless to say, I have lots of questions. Anyway, last week I picked up a 73 AT3 125 for my wife. The bike is not running but it has lots of potential, good compression, 95% complete and 720 original miles on the clock. The bad side of this machine is someone monkeyed with the electrical. I guess my first question is with the electric start. Based on the wiring diagram I have started filling in the blanks so to speak on the harness (it looks like the previou…

OK, here is the problem. The bike (81 XS 400) now starts up no problem, all the lights work properly and for the first few blocks is a pleasure to drive. 3 blocks later I hit a stop light and the thing is now going crazy! The RPM's are at 5,000 and they wont go down! Its the devil!!!!! Does it not want to leave my home? Does this bike hate me?? Where the heck does that petcock lever go? Left, right or the middle? Is it related to the RPM's? What the heck is going on? Also, sometime the bike feels VERY powerful, then the next time I go to ride it seems to be at 70%?? Any suggestions???

So, i posted earlier about my bike. Got it running(battery, spark plug.. think it still needs carb work.. but thatll be later) Anyway, I can get it into first and drive it around the block.. but Im having problems getting to another gear or getting back to nuetral. After fiddling with it for awhile, i started to realize that the gear selector itself was waaaaaay looser than any other gear selector ive ever dealt with. Normally, you click down and it snaps back, click up, it snaps back up. etc etc. On this bike.. you snap it down.. it stays down, you snap it up, it stays up. Like waaaay down and way up. What could be wrong?

Bike is a 1978 XS400E

Another question: Have a 1982 XS400RJ Seca, need to rebuild/clean the carbs, pretty sure they are 34mm Mikuni (2 of them) what rebuild kit do I need for my bike (gasket, needles etc.). Can I buy one from MikesXS, or is there some other source (live in Ontario, Canada but can order on-line). Just want to order the correct ones, then will finally get around to cleaning out my carbs. Thanks in advance,

Hi all, well arrive home with my 1975 RD 250 B the other day and now its time to start thinking about its restoration, the bike is in very good condition for a 35 year old bike, but will need a lot work to bring it her up to show room condition, I plan to strip the bike down to the frame then send all the diffrent parts off to be re-chromed, Powder coated, rebuilt etc, make and order a list of new parts, then start the rebuild from the frame up. I would be very greatful if any of you could advise me on the best place to go for the Engine rebuild,Powder coating, tank and side panels respray, wheel rebuilding, spare parts etc, and if you have done this before then any ad…

  13. Started by 1981xs400II,

Sorry, for all the questions everybody but so far I have taken members advice for my brakelight and high idle problems..both which are now fixed. So I am going for question #3. Can the tach be taken apart? Why? Well, it seems that the two tiny screws, inside the front glass have shaken themselves loose. They are now sitting at the bottom of the tach and the face of the tach shakes. I know there are 4 panhead? screws in the back but I am not sure that taking these off will give me access to the face of the tach? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm back! My Dad and I dilligently worked on my 82 xs400 and she runs great and is a lot of fun to ride. I think I am falling in love with her (don't tell my wife!!). Well the problem I have now, and its very minor and not a deal breaker at all, is that when riding, it hesistates between 4k and 5k but it seems like it only does it in 3rd and 4th gears. It's no deal breaker and I won't be getting rid of it because of it either. If anyone can let me know, that would be fantastic, and one of these days I'll post photos of my beautiful baby.

  15. Started by Noah,

can you help me with where to get a carb rebuild kit for the mikuni bs34 carbs, I've been looking and can't find a rebuild kit anywhere, I did find a place that does full rebuilds http://www.wgcarbs.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=29 but they are expensive, I just want a kit that has all the O-rings, gaskets, needles and floats. or some where I can piece together my own kit, thank you.

Just a quick intro, as I'm new to bikes (owning and riding) as well as these forums. I'll have to ask for at least a little patience as I'm not an expert with engines. So, hey! I took a chance this weekend and got ahold of a 1981 SR250 (I think they also call them Exciters). I traded it straight up for my old laptop, so there was no real money out of pocket. The condition of the bike is pretty rough. The tank has a lot of rust inside, it didn't come with a battery, the seat is in bad shape, and it's dented/rusted in various places. Onto the good news... my dad hooked up the battery leads to his tractor just for the hell of it and it started right up! It stopped…

What is this? Uploaded with ImageShack.us What you are seeing in the picture is 4 brown wires, 1 Red/Yellow and 1 Red/White wires soldered together. 2 of the Brown wires run toward the front of the bike. 1 Brown wire runs to the fuse box 1 Brown wire goes to what appears to be the Voltage Regulator clip. Both Red wires go back to the fuse box Please tell me why this would be? Also, the voltage regulator that is supposed to be under the fuse box(removed) is not in fact there. Thanks, Aaron

  18. Any good metric toolkits (not like the kind you have in the your saddlebag, but a more detailed kit)? Someone recommended this Crescent Toolkit for standard maintainance, but wasnt sure if was a good fit to classic metric bikes (specifically 78 XS400), It includes alot of SAE tools too, so wasnt sure what will give the most bang for your buck for motorcycle use ... http://www.amazon.com/Crescent-CTK170CMP-Mechanics-Tool-170-Piece/dp/B000LWAX2C Anyone got suggestions to help add onto this list?: It doesnt need to be a speciality kit as I already have or am sharing with my friend these items: Circlip internal/external pliers Cheap socket/wrench set (3/8 ratch…

I have a '79 XS400 and I took the adjustment screws out of the carbs today to take a peek at them, this is what I found. The one on the right is bent and mushroomed a bit and the one on the right is flat on the top. Obviously the one on the left is messed up but I just wanted to know if the one on the right is normal for this bike. I am very new to bikes mechanically and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions at some point. Thank you.
