For the Vintage Yamahas

I just recently bought a 79 XS 750. They guy before me switched it to the air pod filter coming off the carbs (Mukuni) My question is.... there is about a foot long, 3/4" vacuum tube (I assume) coming off of the engine block (by the oil cap) that is not blocked off or attached to anything. Where should this go? I think it probably attaches to the air box/filter, but there is not one since he had switched it over. What do I do? THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!

I see tons of bobbers and cafe racers, but few if any semi-original bikes. The XS400 is quite a competent roadster with only a few modifications, most of which can be done without compromising the historicity of the bike. Is anybody besides me riding a stock (or close to stock) XS400?

Greetings and salutations to everyone!!! Alright, to the quick and dirty. Posted a couple questions a number of months ago when I started the rebuild of my '77 XS400D. Over the past year or so I tore the thing down to all it's bits and pieces. Cleaned it all up, repainted it...unfortunately a rattle can was all I could afford, and rebuilt it with mostly original parts. I FINALLY got the thing started this morning and as far as I can tell it's running top notch except for a high idle which I think I can fix with a carb adjustment. Now to my problem. As soon as it started there appeared some blue smoke in the left side exhaust. I thought not to worry since there i…

  5. So I was debating selling my 1st and only bike I bought last year to get a CB 350 last september and then while on vacation someone knocked my bike over (and stole my friends van and busted his other cars windows lol). So when I came back I decided to make my baby into something beautiful to get back at whoever knocked it over hehe. Hence the name "Black Vengeance". Here is what she was: and here is what she is (minus the fork gaiters and maybe K&N air filters I bought ... and my new very cool non-neon helmet which I'll upload in a few weeks): I bought all the parts (tank/seat courtesy of awesome seller Dave, still …

  7. Started by Born2Restore,

HELP! Just installed a new set of mikuni RS racing carbs onto my 1981H xs1100 and the bike is back firing through the carbs. A recent restore and never heard the bike run, but it turns over well. I've checked the timing chain tensioner and it appears to be fine. I also opened up the case and accessed the timing mechanism and it doesn't look like either diagram in the OEM service manual. It doesn't have an F designation on the timing plate or the timing degree hash marks. It has a T and a C on the plate and a 4R0-10 designation stamped on the plate. Does anyone know how this is suppose to be timed? This bike was abandoned in a barn for 14 years and I've worked the past …

  8. I have a single disc setup, using the strange looking pivoting caliper, the one with wedge shaped pads!!!, this is my first experience of this type of caliper and I'm not sure I want to continue using the god awful thing. It appears a previous owner has rebuilt the caliper with new seals and the master cylinder looks clean enough, I have bled new fluid into the system but the effort required to give even a small amount of braking effect is crazy. The brake line is still the rubber original but I'm not convinced changing it will give significantly better performance. Is there a direct bolt on upgrade from a newer machine or have I got it all wrong about this oddball c…

  9. I have just collected an '82 XS400 SE 4G5(UK spec), It was bought as a non runner, but after delving into the bike a little bit, it seems it has the BS32 carbs from an XS250, has anyone used these carbs succesfuly with this engine and if so could they recommend some jet sizes. It appears the carbs have standard XS250 jets and the only change I have found from standard is that the needle has been raised to the 4th notch(2nd notch is standard for XS250). I can't wait to get the bike up and running, as it's in generaly very nice condition and I'm sure will be fun to ride. I'll try and get some pics up when it's back in one piece. Cheers... Krusty.

i was about to do a painstaking fork rebuild plus resurface/polish (somehow) until I found a set on fleabay for $20 USD! for both! why work on it when you could be riding? so..... why would a '79 (xs4Special) not fit a '77 (xs4d)? I wanted to check with the all-knowing yama-geniuses on here. Any response to my noobish query would be much appreciated.

I got my clutch and gear lever sorted out last night, but when I was going to kick it I ran into problems. First the kick doesnt want to spring back, so I have to lift it up with my foot. Then, when I kick, it sometimes springs back with a huge force and hits the engine with a loud noise. Something is clearly not as it should be. It was ok before I replaced the clutch, so what on earth has happened? And how to fix it... I want my old kick back

I have heard about the overheating issues with TX500's that cause heads to crack and what not and was wondering what the best oil would be to run before I start taking it on the road.

I have a 1977 xs400 that I am slowly modifying into a sort of street tracker/cafe racer hybrid. Haven't done much yet, but my first order of business besides doing the seat and rear end is finding a 2 into 1 exhaust for it. I know that kerker doesn't make them for that year anymore, and from what I've found, it's pretty hard to find an original one. I know that mac makes one, but I don't really want to spend $250 on a product that I've heard some sh*tty reviews on........any suggestions on where to look or other options? I will put some pics up soon also! Thanks.

Hello everybody! I am happy to find such a place for Yamaha-Owners from all around the globe. I ride a beautiful black 1985 SR 500 myself. She is really making me happy since I bought her 18 months ago. At the moment I am thinking about enduros a lot 'cause I'd like a second pair of wheels for the weekends. I've been searching the web for any information on Yamaha CT-1C, which is being offered to me as a bargain. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to find valid information on the bike. Why is that? Even the searching of yamahaclub.com brought up just a couple of matches… Is it a solid bike? Is it hard to get spare parts and where would I get them? Is th…

Hi. I'm having some trouble adjusting my clutch cable. First off there's no spring at the end of the cable at the crankcase. Does this spring just help the cable/ lever spring back? The Main problem is either the clutch is not engaging when the lever is pulled in(making shifting rough and obviously not good for the gears), nor disengaging all the way when let out in gear(which would probably result in burning out my clutch?) There's a very slight happy medium adjustment span that will allow me to drive the bike. But when i adjust it either way it will stall when i put it in gear, or not let out all the way. Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks

hey. Im definitely new to motorcycles in general. I have a problem with starting my bike. It's a 1982 Sr 250. When i bought the bike it had a new battery. The problem was when i would hit the start button the starter solenoid would just click. I'd have to put the bike in gear, rock it back and forth, then put it back in neutral and then it'd turn over and start.(Sometimes after a few time of doing this process) Now only the starter solenoid clicks continually and doesn't turn over at all. So my question is does this just sound like a bad starter solenoid? And can you bypass the solenoid to make sure its not the starter? Thanks

1982 XS400 bike. This bike will make your eyes water after 15 seconds, it runs so rich. The air filter is clean and both plugs are firing. The factory book shows no air/fuel mixture screws on the carbs. Earlier years show having the air/fuel mixture screws. Does anyone have experience in correcting this problem on this vintage bike? Thanks in advance. Phil
