Battery is drained afterwards. Even in motion, when I pop the clutch to get fire again... no turnover. <Checked fuses, they check out> What should I check and in what order? Thanks! -J

Anyone know what size jet needles are on my XS360, and would MikesXS carry them? Or, any other source, for that matter?

I got your carb thread right here, buuuuuuddy! So, this of course goes out to the usual suspects. I've replaced my ratty stock filters with uni socks that I run behind the side panels, but without the air boxes. I raised the needles one notch to match the increase in air intake. I synched the carbs, adjusted the pilot screws. The bike runs great now, very responsive, smooth at all throttle positions, all that stuff. The one thing though, she's become a tyranical bitch to start. I now have to kick the living crap outta the kick start till she'll finally turn over. It sometimes takes me a good 10 minutes of kicking her until she's finally start up. Once she'…

Hi everyone. I just bought a 1980 Yamaha. The engine has 655cc stamped on it but I'm having a hard time identifying if it is an XJ 650 or an XS 650 maxim, or an XS 650G. Is there a way to identify this engine before I start ordering parts for the engine. Thanks. Brotherflash

Hey all. Just picked up my xj. I had to travel 180 miles to pick it up, and what a ride home! so windy! I doubt I'll be using it for long trips! Just wondering if there are after market fairings to buy? I know there are screens (any one own one? Where best to buy?) but are there any real fairings for it, or will any fit from other xj's (like the diversion)? I used to ride a virago (only a 125) but this is my first 'big' bike. It may need a little work as the gears are very clunky, the front break is very spongy and the rear break is SO sensitive - just a small nudge will lock it! I'm only using this for the winter - I'd like a sports tourer for summer. I'm sure once …

I'm looking to get a windshield for my 82 Seca400. Just wondering what you guys are using on your older Yamaha's Lets hear your experiences, good or bad. I've been looking at the Plexifairing 3, The Plexifairing GT, and some of the windshields from Memphis Shades. I use my bike for commuting to work and I ride year round (except for rain and snow days). I need the protection of some kind of windscreen. Thanks Guys ! p.s. heres a pic of my bike

My Dad is working on getting a '72 RD250 back on the road. He's got it running again, but we need a new seat cover and probably foam too. Does anyone know where we could find one without going nuts on the price? It doesn't have to be totally authentic or anything, just a working seat cover that's not going to cost an arm and a leg. I had a previous thread regarding my '74 TX500 and some issues I was having with it. Well, now it's pretty much road worthy with the exception of a slight idling issue. The bike starts up fine (on choke or without when cold, no choke when hot) and idles great when it's cold. Once I take the bike out and it gets warmed up it always feels like it wants to die when I let the rpm's settle back down to idle (just above 1k). It use to die like this all the time until I restricted the intake filter a bit (wrapped some cloth around it somewhat decreasing breath ability) and this seemed to help. I have figured that it is probably just running lean at idle/under 4k rpms (p…

Hello, I have an 1981 XS400. The exhaust headers on the bike are rusted up quite nicely and I have the presence of some RTV where I joined the slipon pipe to the exhaust header. I was thinking about wrapping the header with exhaust header wrap to conceal these uglies but was wondering if it is a bad idea. AS the bike is air cooled, I was wondering if using exhaust header wrap if it would prevent proper cooling, and was wonderig if this would cause my exhaust valves to get too hot and eventually end up burning. Any thoughts?

I just got a 1980 yamaha xs850 and it makes a valve trane rattle it has 30,000 miles on it and I am unaware of the service history. I changed the oil with the proper weight and it still does it. Do the valves have to be adjusted on this model? Maybe the timing chain? it kinda sounds like a chain but it doesnt skip time or anything fires right up on one kick. runs great besides that high pitch noise. any help would be much appreciated chris

This year bought a 1979 XS 750, and although I know from reading this forum it is not the best bike Yamaha made, I would like to persevere with her. She has been running quite well with surprisingly few electrical problems. I live close to Seattle (Vashon Island), and would like any recommendations for a shop who can set up the carbs- Twin Line won't work on any past 1978, and the other choice is Southend Motorcycle Service- has anyone used them ? Apart from Ebay, are there any shops in Seattle that sell parts for my bike ? Thanks- Spencer

My 83 xs 400 DOHC Maxim has recently developed "Petcock Incotinence." It just drips out with the valve set to the on position. It normally doesn't leak anything. The petcock has res, pri, and on. None of these posotions are "Off." The on position is off when the bike isn't running. It set overnight. I came in the next morning and I must have leaked a half a gallon onto the floor. It's filling up the carbs too, leaking out of the intake side and filling up the cylinders. Some gas got onto my NEW backtire and formed a bubble on the tire. I am so pissed. Anyway. Is there a quick fix for the valve? I want to put a "Shut-off" valve after the petcock and in front o…

So, I sold my 83 xs 400. The guy rode it around town all day before buying it. After he gives me the money, he rides it home and a few miles down the road, the bike dies. He flooded it and couldn't get it started. He cranked on the starter for a long time until the battery died. I showed up with a new battery, cleaned the plugs off, PUT SOME GAS IN IT, and started it. Now my stater is toast. It will not crank at full speed. I took it apart and found some windings "welded together" inside. After I got the bike started the first time, I would ride for a few minutes then the bike would just die while riding. Would this starter be a "dead short" now, and cause the b…

Hi all, I'm new here having just acquired a 1979 DT 125 MX, presently sitting in a garage in South West France. The bike has been sitting up for the last eight years and has recently been serviced (I think this was just a new clutch, oil and filter) but is now running. I covered a few miles before a front puncture slowed things down. The learning point here is that inner tubes usually perish after such a lengthy rest.... I'm missing a flywheel cover for this bike, so if anyone can help out with one in any condition I'd be interested. Cheers, Paul

Hey, I have a 73 TX 500 with a leaky head gasket. I was wondering what to do about the cam chain, I called my local Yamaha dealer and searched Bikebandit.com and the master link is no longer available. Is there any way to get around having to break the chain? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.
