For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by Big Ross,

The oil companies here are just phasing out Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP). I rely on this stuff to run both my XT500 and my SR500. Now, has anyone had any experience of running any of the big four stroke singles on unleaded? Which (if any) additives work? Do I really need them? 95 or 98 octane? The best thing the oil company rep could come up with the suggestion that I "experiment". I will, if he supplies me with a spare head for a '78 XT!

Hey, does anyone know where i can get a set of carbs for my 1969 Yamaha R3? The originals for it are supposed to be Mikuni VM28's, but they've been discontinued and its a hard to find part. I've tried a few other carbs (VM29's and VM30's) but i keep run into problems trying to mount em. It seems i need an adapter or simply the original carbs but i can find neither. I wish i had more details about what the original carbs looked like but i never had em, i found the bike without carbs. This part number and illustration is all i have: part number: 15604-001 Illustration of the carb

Hi Folks: New to this forum. Recently picked up a 1983 Maxim 400 in great shape and low miles, mostly for my boys to learn on. It runs well, but as we're going through it I discovered the petcock was not preventing fuel from flowing when the bike was off. Opening the petcock revealed a failed attempt to use silicone to seal the diaphragms. I have a petcock rebuild kit, with two diaphragms on the plunger, but I can't make sense of putting it back together because: 1) both diaphragms are next to each other on the plunger and look like they were meant to stay that way, but when I pulled it apart there was a diaphragm on each side of a phenolic spacer. 2) the phenolic sp…

What RPM do you like to turn at highway speeds? say 60mph or 100kph I've been running about 4,500rpm in 6th but it feels a little bogged down. I ran for a little today at 7,000 in 4th. It Sounded great and ran really nice. I don't want to abuse it but it just like it was more at home in the higher RPM's. My bike is a 77 XS-400D http://www.pontiacs.org/modules/gallery/album11/IMAGE_008

77 500 xs: tried siliconing the intake mani's with no such luck. The bike idles great and has awesome throttle response when cold (no backfiring too) but as soon as she warms up I'll get the infamous high-idle and awfull low-end throttle response; also starts popping. I do have cracked and dry-rotted intake mani's. Will 650 Mikuni BS38 carb boots off of Mikesxs.com fit my Mikuni BS34's? I do believe mine are 38mm (not sure) diameter openings. If they will not does anyone else know of a reference or site I could get some new ones from? Thanks.

Hi all. I have just got a DT 400 from 75. It hasn't been driven very much since '82. I will start if the sparkplug is dry, and no choker is used. But it won't take the throttle, then it's stops, and the spark plug is wet as hell. Does anyone have some input what I can do? Some time it 4 strokes. Regards Rasmus in Denmark

Hello ! "Yamaha's 500 cc twin was first shown at the 1972 Tokyo motor show and introduced in 1973 as the TX 500." Do anyone know, if they send some Bikes to USA or Europa 1972 ? We like to build a racing bike of that modell, but the bike must have been already 1972 for sale, and do not find any !! I know, that in USA you can have it as a 1972 bike, but I am living in Europe, Finland.... Best Recards Risto

I've got a vacuum line running from the petcock into one of the carbs, whereas the other carb just has a rubber cap on the vacuum nipple. Is that normal, or should the vacuum line split out into both carbs? The bike runs good and all, so I figure I'll leave well enough alone. But, just askin'. Am I wrong to assume that hooking up the line to the other carb as well would increase the fuel delivery, making it too rich a mixture, which will then require screwing with the carbs to calibrate things out again?

Hello, I'm new here and picking up a '74 TX500A this afternoon. The bike has under 1000 original miles but from what the PO told me, it doesn't start. He has replaced the battery, plugs, and resealed the inside of the tank (I think he said it has some rust in it). I am almost certain that the carbs are probably sticking or that the fuel lines are clogged BUT I wanted some third party advice. The last time it was ridden was in 1981, stored till just recently. Should the motor (internally) be okay after sitting for so long? Aside from cleaning/rebuilding the carbs and replacing the fuel lines, what else should I do engine wise to prep it for running? (I wil…

Rebuilding a 77 DT400 here's what i have done so far, cases split total rebuild, installed carb rebuild kit, repaint all fenders [krylon fusion red] tank sprayed to original specs, seat reupholstered, boyesen reeds [boyesen recommends cutting the stock cage "windows" for better flow so i did, makes sense] went from 8 little windows to four and i would think this concept would apply to other DT engines , cylinder punched out and wiseco pro-lite piston installed, k&n air filter, cleaned out and cleaned up ports with dremel, must have been 2-3 grams of carbon that come out of that jug, bought a good used autolube pump off e-bay, along with several other items for the reb…

Anyone out there have info on modifying a Harley Sportster Tank to work on an xs (xs400 in particular)? I am wondering if much has to be done as the Carbs are vacum carbs (whatever those are). There is also some sort of Tampon filter at the top of the petcock into the Stock tank, does this need to come over to the new tank? Any help appreciated.

looking at the transmission breakdown i have, it appears as though it is possible to replace gears individually. would it be possible to replace just 5th gear to get a taller gearing if I could find the aftermarket replacement? I have looked into switching out sprockets, but can only find custom made ones that will only drop 3 teeth in the back, and I cant go any larger in the front. It seems to me that switching out 5th gear alone would give me the best of both worlds.... short gearing for snappy around town response, and a taller, more relaxed pacing for when I want to get on the highway or take a long easy ride. any ideas? here is the parts breakdown -…

I was looking to replace the bulb for a brighter one on the ole girl, but read in the clymer's manual that only the UK models have replacable bulbs, whereas the US models need to have the whole assembly (bulb/reflector/glass) swapped out??? What sort of madness is this? Anyways, did anyone try to swap out the bulb on the US model without replacing that whole assembly?

Evening, I have recently bought a new project what i think is a 1980 XS400SE the frame No starts "4G5". I am after some general info on this model. If somebody could point me in the right direction to any of the following it would be appriciated. Model Info, Workshop Manual, BEst place for Spares, etc The bike itself i have bought has a few bits and pieces missing the side panels, petrol tank and seat. The good part is that engine runs sweet and electrics seem to be fine. I am in 2 minds as to what to do with the bike, put it back to standard or get it on the road and use it. Any help on the above would be appriciated Cheers Chris
