I have an xs 400 and popped the seat off and noticed the fuse and the far side was all black and had melted the plastic holder around the fuse. I replaced the fuse about 2 months ago, and I know it is the fuse that the ignition runs through. so I turned on the ignition and within a few seconds the metal casing for the fuse was hot to the touch. what does this mean and what is a possible cause???? also if anyone knows what is for sure the proper fuse for that, so I can check to make sure that I got the same one when I replaced it. pretty sure I did but it never hurts to check!!

Ok so I have a 1981 XS400 and am going to change the oil for the first time. (In the process of rebuilding it) On the bottom of the crankshaft underneath the oil filter housing, there are 2 bolts, but I am not sure which one is for the oil drain plug. There is one bolt that hangs down quite a bit lower than the other. I tried looking at the parts diagram however the iso view is not quite clear. By the way is there also appears to be another similar bolt on the left hand crankcase. Thanks

Hi all I am a fairly new rider and I took my maxim out for a ride the other day and found that I was slipping out of gear in every gear. It changes gears just fine and there are no jerky starts everything works fine except it slipps out on me at high revs (between 4-6 thousand RPMs). I figure its a clutch issue, is it just a matter of adjustment or does it need complete replacement? I tried adjusting the clutch with the screw up at the handle bars and I have small differences but its still slipping out. I have not yet had time to look at it. I will this evening but has this happened to anyone else? Thanks all

I'm refurbishing a former farm bike, which has lost its signals (and a few other parts). I cannot find a clear photo or illustration of what the turn signal lights (front'n'rear) look like, and how they are mounted. Any photos would be appreciated, either posted, or emailed. I bought some aftermarket lights from a dealer, but they turned out to be for an XT. Thanks awfully. Rest of bike is complete, and I can help others with info / input on things like suspension/brakes/speedometer, as I've all these apart, and replaced much of the innerds.

I am in the process of rebuilding an 81xs400 and am having a hard time finding some parts. I am looking for the shaft with the attached hooks that are underneath the sea, used to hold down and lock the seat. My current seat is in great shape, so I don't want to buy a new seat from ebay for $75, since I just need this one part. I was hoping that someoe may have an extra lying around if they replaced a seat. If not I will have to build one by welding a hook on a shaft and if anyone has a photo of the hook or an outline please post a photo. Thanks

Why have I never joined this site before!? A while ago I inherited a pair of ty250 twinshocks from a friend who had run out of space. They'd been sat for 10 years and unfortunately one had been landed on it's face and folded the frame. After sorting through the bits I found I had just enough to rebuild one bike. SO... now I'm a year on, have a pretty much perfect motor but the one good frame is in a poor state (crappy paintwork and foot peg snapped off) and I've just about run out of funds for it. Shame. I'd love to finish it but as time goes on and house moving looms it's looking less and less likely. I guess the question is really how much cash is it worth sinki…

I shouldn't look at Craigslist, but I just can't help it.. I woke up last week and saw that a 1978 XS500 had just been posted for sale in my neighborhood. I called the owner and hopped on my XS400 with my checkbook. $275 later I own my first project bike! Good- -bike seems complete (except the actual plastic start button is gone with the spring sticking out) -has some sort of cruise control on the throttle I'm completely baffled on how it works -The compression seems healthy -The seat looks great -shows 10k miles -the previous owner started cleaning he bike and I think it is going to look pretty sharp when finished - I changed some fuses and hooked the batt…

I have been trying to see if the bolt holes line up (via pictures since I don't have a 650 to use as a reference) and they seem somewhat similar. Has this been tried before? I am guessing that it isn't possible (too good to be true). The 650 seems like a very popular engine. Thanks.

Just a quick question.. Will the tanks from the bigger bikes bolt up to a XS400 frame? I just picked up a XS400 but I'm missing the seat, tank and side covers. It would really help to know what models I can pick from.. I found a 650 with no title that would really help finish the XS400 off.. I know keeping the 650 together would be a good option but it takes 2 -3 years to get a new title. without the original owner to sign off.

I need to know what tire sizes I can run on the TX, I am looking at a 100/90/19 for the front and a 120/90/18 for the rear but I have read that some use a 110 rear. Can I fit the 120?

I have been riding my old '78 for the last few weeks and enjoying gas milage in the high 40s, good stuff. Turned out my 'starting problem' was more or less just not kicking hard enough. Now she will hit after 3-4 good kicks 1st thing in the morning in 50 degree ambient temp, and more often than not 1st go warmed up. Won a side panel off of E-pay and a fellow at the local Auto Zone is giving me a front fender off of a '72 CB450. As I am running a 100/90/18 on front, a little more fender would suit me right down to the ground. Long-term plans call for going semi-custom with a lot of Brit styling cues (knee guards, Triumph-style 2 tone paint, late Triumph-style rearview mirr…

Hi Everybody, Last week I've bought a "garagefind" XS500 that hadn't been running for a long time and because I didn't drive one since 1980.......why not? At the first glance it looked O.K. and 100% original. The second glance was less promising: badly rusted inside of the fueltank, broken clutchcable, rotten mufflers, battery died, no starterbutton, dirt and grease everywhere and so on..... but this is all part of the "classic bike" fun of course and I took it home anyway. Because I didn't hear the engine run when I bought it I decided to make that happen before making a restauration plan. I "Kreemed" the fueltank, cleaned the petcocks and installed a new battery. A…

I can't seem to find a way to get the pistons out of my caliper. I brought them to a shop so they could use their compressed air to 'push' them out but no luck. The only thing I can think of next would be to use the master cylinder. I had them soak in some PB Blaster overnight, no change. They only have 644 miles on them. Any other suggestions?

Hi all, This is my very fist post here but I've been reading you for a while, so hello! I've just bought (two weeks ago) my first bike, a 1987 Yamaha XS400 12E, and I'm certainly happy with it. I'm doing minor tunning to ensure safety (tyres, brakes...), but the bike runs quite smoothly. I'm now planning my first addition: a windscreen, but it's being quite a pain finding one that fits this model's square headlight Did anyone here manage to find one? or did you manage to adapt one? On other subject, it happens that the technical (legal) information coming with the bike doesn't reflect the real power, and being the XS400 a model with different versions rat…

Upon trying to really top out my 81 xs400, I got to 71 MPH and just couldn't get anymore. When trying to rev the throttle any higher than 6500 RPM in 6th gear, the engine boggs down and can't go any higher. The bike is really quick up until that and the engine runs strong. I know most of these can do 90-95 mph with stock components. What's going on here!?

Hi all again, Although it looks I wasn't very lucky in my fist post I'm posting again with my hopes in getting any answer... I've been checking my bike and have realised it's missing two devices; I think they may have been removed First: I've read somewhere that the bike has a side stand switch that cuts off the engine if you engage a gear while the side stand is open. After checking the part list and checking the bike I've realised the swith is not there at all. Do your bikes have it? Does anyone have a picture of it? the manual is not very graphical and I'would like to see it physically for trying to find a replacement and an idea on how to mount…
