78 xs 400. For some reason fuel is accumilating in the carb adapters...I dont know why. Needle and seat appear to be fine, one float had a hole but I soldered it shut. I rebuilt the pet cock. If any one could help.

Hi all, does anyone here have a 1976 DT400?. The ignition switch on mine is missing, and i was wondering if the one from an XT500 is the same. By the look of the parts book it has 2 block connectors. Thanks for any help. Chris. Forgot to mention its the UK version, type 513

It's a 1979 400xs. vehicle id. 2V6. It's a gift from a friend and it's been in storage for 20 yrs. Cruds' a kickstarter with about 10,000 miles on her and everything is in working order now, except for the fore-mentioned topic description. The manual that I was given is hard to read when looking at the wiring scmatics. Wire colors don't match and there's a F.R.E.D. with no reference to. (the fred is located on the left side near bottom of tank) Are all the problems related? and if so does it involve f.r.e.d.! F.R.E.D.=flipping rediculous electronic device.....

Hey everyone. I've got a 1976 RD400C with an interesting steering problem. I'll try to describe it as best as I can, so please bare with me. The steering feels loose in general compaired to my other vintage yamaha bikes. On a sharp turn, even at slow speeds, the steering seems to want to come towards the bike (tank). It feels like theres a spot where any resistance in the steering seems to be lost. When the front wheel is hanging at full droop, the steering seems to be very non-linear. Is it true the RD400C has no steering damper? Could this be the cause of what i'm experiencing? Any help or input you could provide me with would be great. Thanks, V…

  8. Hello Everyone. This is my first Yamaha, a 1982 XS400 Maxim. I am very disappointed that it does not have a kick start. Upon cold start, the engine cranks but will not start. Intermittently I will get some rumble, even once it started on full choke but promptly died as soon as choke was less than 100%. I cursed the bike and left it out back. The next day I hooked up my starter/charger, gave the bike an extra 50 amps and the bike sprang to life without hesitation. I took the choke off, and it idles fine. After idling for less than one minute I killed it, then waited a moment and started it again. Started fine. Drives fine. So obviously the bike needs anything o…

Hi all! Just got my Maxim a few days ago and I want to change the oil but I can't find the specs anywhere. It didn't come with a manual and nothing is visible through the oil window. I was hoping someone would know how much to refill. Also, my Virago had a different rear suspension system, does anyone know how to adjust the shocks on the Maxim? I have an idea but I don't want to mess it up. Thanks. Peace and carrots. _dave

Hi there. Brand new to the site! A friendly neighbor gave me his '78 XS400 that he no longer had the time for. When he got it he did ride it home (like 8 yrs ago?) He said he had the engine fixed up around that time, but had not run it since. I'm no expert, but I can tell the cylinders move and have compression. I would say that if I can get the engine started, I would be in decent shape of I replaced the cables, tires, and brakes. The pipes could use some work too. So the first order of business it to do a fluid change, get a new battery, replace the spark plugs and keep my fingers crossed that sitting so long hasn't gummed it all up too bad. I figure if …

I rebuilt a 1981 XV750SE about 3 years ago, but the one thing that lets it down is poor carburation. Original carbs, although thoroughly cleaned, work well for a while and then degrade. Poor starting and slight misfire while running from time to time. Clean em up and retune and they are fine for another 500miles. Can anyone recommend replacement of the original Mikuni carbs with another more modern type or style?.

On my XJ550 the left hand Petrol Tank badge (which is made of hard plastic) has stared to crack/fall to bits (so it now reads 'AMAHA ). So I go to my local Yamaha Dealer for a new one (who I have to say has been brilliant in the past and infact suprised me what is still available/been able to get for me despite bike being 25 year old) he checks part number and asks for £16.38 ($30.17) and told to wait a week ...this morning (after 2 days) I get a call, totally apologetic from parts chap saying item has been discontinued and a full refund of my money awaiting at dealership. So looks like i've got to have a search round the breakers/bone yards/ebay. Thus my…
