Hi all- I'm new to this forum, but am hopeful someone can help. Here's the story... I saw an add on Craigslist for a 1981 Yamaha xs400s- "$250 FIRM, Bring a truck" I figured since I rode one back in college, this would be a good bike to start on again- it's been a few years. I've put in a carb kit, gone through all the electrical etc. I replaced the stock airbox type air filter with K&N style air filters. Bike will start ONLY with starter fluid. Once it starts, it will run nicely. Will restart when warm on it's own. Float bowls have been adjusted to recomended setting, valves have been adjusted, and I just installed new plugs. Plenty of spark. T…

Would like to lose my mag wheels in favor for spoked wheels. Does any one know if I can run any XS wheels or if I am limited to XS 400 wheels only? What are the considerations I need to learn? in any event, any idea where I can score some? Thanks

I see that the headlight on my Maxim is a sealed unit. Would any 7" replacement headlight work? I've been researching a bit and it seems that a seller on eBay (Rimiinc) sells universal headlight replacements that uses a standard H4 bulb. The stock lamp isn't burned out yet, but for a 26 year old bike I probably should start looking for a replacement soon. Here's a link to one of the headlights: http://stores.ebay.com/Autopal-Lights The Maxim headlight measures out to the same size as my '97 Nighthawk, so I'm guessing it would drop right into the bucket on the Maxim. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hey guys! I am a new member with a recent purchase of a 1977 Yamaha 500 xs with 15000 original miles and unfortunately have my first issue with the ignition. After a nice weekend of riding I washed and waxed her up only to find that it now will not start. I have juice up to the ignition switch as the neutral indicator lights up but the start button doesn't work assuming some relay or other switch has failed in between. I cannot kick-start or compression start the bike either. I checked and rechecked all fuses and connections; battery level is fine. I started testing the smaller ignition components with a tester light not really knowing where to start nor their functions. …

I have a 1981 XS400SH and am looking for a muffler to install on the bike. The bike has head pipes that are cut behind the point where the muffler was welded on to the headers. There is a slight flare before the cut point and I can see another pipe inside. I have tried MikesXS.com and was looking at their slip-on options, however I am concerned that these mufflers may interfere with the controls. Anyone have any experience with these or can you recommend something else? I have no preference to style or sound, just looking for the cheapest solution that will not burn my valves.

Having a little bike problem here, got myself a 1984 yamaha FJ 600 Diversion she was driving fine now i can't get her to start. You can hear the battery kicking over but she wont start. I was thinking it could be 1 of 4 spark plugs. (I was told if she has 4 cylinders and one stops working she wont start.) I cant try the spark plug method untill thursday due to lack of funds. But any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brian

Greetings, all. I'm another newbie here with a few vintage motocrossers. I look forward to meeting you other vintage enthusiasts as time goes on, and to be of some assistance when I can. I recently picked up a 1970 DT1CM motocrosser that just came out of a barn here in Virginia. Its rough--I mean really rough. The story is that the old farmer just pushed the bike into the barn when his kids left home. Everything is original, but the chrome is rusty, and all the rubber is dry rotted. It must have been sitting for more than a decade. The motor has decent compression though, and now it has spark. But to my point: Its got a strange carb manifold on it that I've never seen…

My XS360 for a 400, or anything that functions with electric start? I just re injured my ankle and am tried of kick starting the thing. All she needs is new a new float in the right carb, everything else is fairly well dialed in.(ish) I am still awaiting surgery on my ankle and I got the steroid shot in it, now I don't realize untill a few days later that I hurt my self. [email protected] and I will zip you some pics if interested in a trade. This is a title for title swap, no cash. -Bill

Hello Folks. I recently purchased a 1970 DT1 250 cc. I remember these bikes from back in the early 70's and always wanted one. I have been watching Ebay but never found a nice one close by. I found a survivor close to home last week that had been ridden almost all of its 2450 miles on the road. All lights work and the bike looks and runs great. I have a few questions that I need answered before I start to accumulate parts to make it like new again. 1. I think that the paint is original but am not sure. Can anyone tell me of the 1970 was red? 2. The fenders are painted grey, was that the original color? 3. The seat is worn and has a small tear. It has the longer (~22inc…

Hi All. I recently picked up a really nice 77 xs360. I plan on keeping it largely stock, with a few cafe orentied mods. While looking up different parts on different parts sites, they ask if it's an XS360c, d, or 2-d. anyone know what the differences are, and how I can tell what model I have. Thanks, mike

Hello everyone, I'm taking the chance of being kciked out since I'm not really working on a complete Yamaha bike. I have a project bike that I'm trying to get a Yamaha AT3 engine into. The bike used to be a '82 moped but the motor was so finicky, and only 50cc, I decided to upgrade. I found a guy who sold me a "ran when I parked it" AT3 motor, parts AT2 motor, and a bucket of bits. I"ve found that the AT2 motor needs a new piston and head, a new oil pump cover, and the cover over the dynamo but otherwise is all there. The AT3 motor is complete and in decent shape from the bottom through the head with everything but the dynamo cover. The bucket of bits had a good …

I have a great running DT 125 b but is probably geared down since it gets near redline at 50 mph. Does anyone know how I could find the stock countershaft and rear sprocket teeth counts? Not trying to make this a highway going bike but I am trying to keep the bike from running anywhere near redline on my local surface roads.

this is my first bike so im sorry if some questions sound retarded. I got a 76 xs360 a while back. previous owner hardtailed it with a stretch and didn't seem to care much for anything else on the bike. it runs well, but has a few little quirks id like to fix. first off, once warmed up sometimes the idle surges high. what causes this? Another question is there seems to be a pretty annoying tight spot in the chain...does this mean the chain needs to be replaced or sprockets, or both? also, when the battery is charged, the bike kicks over fine, but if its dead, it seems like the motor isnt making anough voltage to get a good spark. i always assumed you could kick a kick sta…
