Hi again, more questions!! I've just about got my bike up and running, (XZ550, 1984) and I've hit another small problem. The original mudguard had a fork brace built into it, but as Ive replaced the mudguard without a brace in it, I'm wondering if I should put an aftet market set on, the type that clamp to the forks? I've just been told that its not really necesary by some one, but I'd like some opinions please.... If I need to, where could I get some? Cheers

Hey All, I've been riding my SRX400 to work and back now for a month. THis is a 80km round trip, most of which is on a highway. I noticed my chain looked a bit dry. I was wondering how often i should lube my chain on my SRX400. It looks pretty dry and i'm concerned about it causing damage. Here are some pics of my chain <i don't know if this helps> NOw seeing as this is an SRX400, which never goes faster than 90miles/hour and usually putters around at ~60-65miles/hour which chain lube would you suggest??

Hi I'm about to fit an alarm to my bike. It says I need to locate the 'positive side of the starter relay'. There are 4 wires to/from the relay. Would it mean the side which 'becmes' live when ignition is turned on or the side which is always live? I presume there is one live going in and one out when the relay is activated? Can anyone help with this please.... Many thanks.

Just a quickie. While tinkering with me cat i had to change three of the dash lights. I changed two with 12v 1.7w lamps and fitted a 5w one by mistake. Although the 5w is brighter and much better, will the do any damage being a higher wattage? Thanks Thunderass.

Was just wondering if anyone would have a idea what is wrong with one of my bikes (would just hapen to be the one that i am riding at the moment as well). There seems to be oil getting into the exhaust and then burning whilse it is in the downpipes, i cant understand it as the bike is serviced regulaly and has only done 17000 miles, though other than loosing the oil this way the bike runs sweet and like new. it would use approx one litre of oil in 15 miles when warm.

hi guys im new here, im having problems with my engine rebuild on my dt125r its a 00 model, to start with there was water in the crankcase when i bought it but i never thought much of it as i was buying it to rebulid anyway, but now iv stripped the head and barrel off and checked the condition of the barrel and piston and all seems fine... but when i hold the con rod and lift i can feel slight play (up and down play) is this ok or do i need to replace bearings? the bike is for off road use only so doesnt need to be perfect.. and wot oil is best to use? cheers for any help.... oh and wot would be the cause of water in the crnkcase???

Hi, i was just hoping someone might have an opinion on how my piston rings should sit on my piston. Bike is a TY250 mono about 84. Last bike i changed a piston on the rings where both the same but on this one they are two different shapes. One is your traditional ring and the other has an L shaped lip. Just to make it trickier their is nothing stamped on either ring, they are genuine yamaha rings and there is nothing in the manual. Just wondering what anybody thought about which ring should go at the top and which way round the ring with the L shaped lip should go? My thanks. J.

Hi all. Merry Christmas. Help please. I fitted a new chain and sprockets to my Thundercat two weeks ago and i am now getting a whirling noise as i throttle up. I have checked chain tension and used a tape measure to make sure the rear wheel is spaced correctly , so is aligned with the front. Is this normal with new chain fitments and will it wear away or am i missing something. Any help would be most welcome as i am now pulling my roots out as i have run out of hair! Many thanks Paul aka Thunderass.

Hi this is my first time on here so im hoping some one can help. Iknow all about the rev counter needle flicking to 8k to show a fuel circuit problem but my bike does it all the time and there dosn't seem to be any problem with the fuel pump etc.I've recently (46 miles ago) stripped the bike to bare metal resprayed it and rebuilt every thing and cleaned all the electrical connections but its still doing it .Its done it since the warranty ran out ive had it since new the only way to stop it is to put it on reserve. It dosn't cause any problems but its annoying espesially when people keep telling me "you've got a fuel circuit problem there mate"Cheers

I'm thinking of replacing the shock absorbers on '81 My XJ550 as the 'Hagon' shock absorbers that I fitted 14 year ago in 1991 are now locking very rusty. In fact the Hagon ones started to have the chrome peal off the springs after just to years of winter riding so this time I decided to look at alternatives. The ones I've looked at (remember I run to run this bike as a cheap 'Jalopy/hack/rat' ) are called SHOX and SHOKA which I think are the same firm/design. They are available in Black, Chrome or a Combination of Black & Chrome (which is simlar to my Hagon made ones) SHOX: SHOKIA: All advice greatly received Thanks…

I bought my first bike (250 Virago) a couple of months ago and took it in for the 600 mile servicing and was I shocked when they gave me the bill: $190! I was thinking it would be more in line with taking a car in for a lube, oil, filter. Obviously, I was mistaken. Does $190 sound right? If so, I think I'll be taking a crash course in motorcycle maintenance.

Hi I've just purchased a 1984 yamaha XZ550.....in bits, I hasten to add. I've got a query regarding pads. My new pads came today but they are slightlyyyy bigger than the originals. They were quite hard to get in the calipers and they dont seem to slide along the shims or slider bolt too easily. You can push them back and forth along them if you use a screw driver or similar instrument, but not easily. I've put copper grease on the approapiate metal bits, but still seem a little stiff. I'm wondering how much resistance is acceptable. Should they be looser than this. or sloppy, or just a little resistance. As pattern parts they are squarer at the shim end, maki…
