just curious ... i am converting my bike to electric ignition so reading parts of the manual i never explored before ... So i am going to put regular 80/81 xs400 coils in my bike... I saw in the Haynes manual (on page 132) with those stock coils and electronic ignition section: "never run the engine without both spark plugs connected, the high 2ndary voltage could damage the ignition coils" Which got me thinking on a side note... On mikesxs, they dont put this warning except on the most high energy performance coils (I guess the 80/81 electronic ignition coils are way stronger than 78/79 coils as well)... Anyway... My main question is... how do I test th…

Hi guys an gals, I'm a newbie to this forum. I have just finished a quick re-furb on a 250 SR and I need some info regarding the oil circulation check. The PDF manual I got through Ebay from Spain, says there is a screw at the bottom of the left of the cylinder. No such screw exists on my engine ! ?? There is however a "hexagon headed/cross point drive" screw/bolt", at the rear of the cylinder head on the right ! Is this the other "bleed" screw ? The original screw which was in the oil filter cover had the same type of head. (I have replaced this particular screw with a stainless button allen screw) Can anyone shed any light on my query ? I hope so …

Hello all, I just bought a 94 xj600. It runs great, however sometimes when I'm riding and I pull the clutch in it doesn't disengage the engine; instead it revs the engine super high. I'm releasing the throttle so I know that isn't what is causing it. I thought maybe adjusting the clutch cable would help but it hasn't. Any ideas on what could be causing this? It doesn't happen often, but it is becoming a real concern for me. Thanks for your help!

Hi guys, I'm Bas from the Netherlands. I'm 16 years old. And I used to drive on a 1982 Puch maxi. With that thing broken down. I've been looking for a Yamaha TZR50. I found one in the neighbourhood. It's a 2005 model. With a bit of scratches on 1 side. But that doesn't really bother me. I know i'm new here. But once I've bought a TZR i will become active here, and post regular updates of my TZR. So it's not that I need help, and be off after i've been helped. My question is, if i'm going to see that TZR, what should I look for. Are there common issues or stuff like that that I have to know, and make sure it's allright one the one i'm looking after to buy? I'm going for a…

Hey guys. Was just on a journey to my grandparent's house, and noticed a small, but noticable noise when in second gear. Only happens at bang on 4,000rpm, lasts for about a quarter of a second. Sounds like a supercharger whining. I've since changed the oil and found nothing in the old oil. Took her out for another quick spin and the noise still persists. My bike's due for it's 3,500 mile service, so I'll probably conjure up some cash for that, but in the meantime, does any of you fine people know/have any idea what it might possibly be?

Please can someone help.I've got issues with my one plug lead which is loose between the lead and the cap so I am therefore losing a lot of power. What I want to know is, is the lead and the coil one complete unit i.e. can you remove the lead from the coil and just replace the lead or is it a sealed unit ? The dealers want to sell me the complete coil and lead which makes no sense to me as the coil is fine, it is just the lead and cap section which is faulty. Thanks !

I have a question regarding the Carb on a Yamaha SR125 1997 Model. There are three pipes into/Out of the carb: 1 from the fuel tank 2 Out of the sump which just dumps directly out to ground. 3 There is a third I have noted in a diagram which is situated on the opposite side of the fuel inlet pipe but I do not know where this terminates (is it similar to the overflow sump and just hangs loosly or does it actually fix to somewhere? regards Derek

The 81 xs400 engine I have has a blackish rubbery? paint on the bottom cylinder block. Its kinda peeling off at certain points. Whats best way to remove while still on the frame? I saw some ideas on internet... JASCO Paint remover carefully painted on and then peel off with small wire brush. I would get the tools to sandblast it, but just want to do a quick decent job with it still on there, doesnt need to be perfect/polished. EDIT: well i tried it ... i got chemical splash goggles, good respirator, and chemical gloves. got a tin can from store and a small brush... applied it on cylinder. waiting 15-20m and then got between fins with q-tips to wipe off …

  12. Okay, I was trying to be smart and being 16 I failed, I got an Yamaha DT125 and not sure what year it is however it's or was in decent condition before it got to me... It was road legal but person before me used it for off roading only so he took all the lights off and switches but left the wiring, I decided to cut some of it and I failed horribly, I cut off most of the cables and now my engine wouldn't start no matter what I do, it does have a spark but it wont start I do have a basic knowledge but not enough to fix this problem by my self and basically I want to have as little cables as it's possible, I want to have as little electronics as it's possible because…

My 1999 XT600E has a starting problem. Sometimes (twice now) when I thumb the starter, the engine cranks over but does not start. When I lift off the starter button, it keeps cranking. Then I remove the ignition key and it still keeps cranking. By this time, I undo the leads from the battery, but it is too late - the starter relay has fused its contacts and burnt out. My mechanic and his auto electrician cannot explain what is causing it! The starter has been thoroughly checked out as have all the switches. Has anyone else had this problem?

  14. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me? I've just rebuilt the top end of my FZX 750 and when it came to balancing the carbs I've picked up a problem of the idle speed at 1000rpm being irratic. It keeps dropping to around 500rpm then cutting out. When I try to even it out with the idle adjusting bolt on the carbs it doesnt respond to the adjustment? I've cleaned out the jets in the carbs which I must say where a tad furry due to it being stood for around 5 years and still have the problem???? any suggestions on how to rectify this problem? 15. i found a good deal on a rebuilt 77 xs400 engine that Im debating buying, and while i am working on rebuilding my engine, I want to swap the 77 in so i can ride ... Is there anything i need to look out for? I'm asking as I bought the 77 carbs off this fellow before, and i noticed the carbs are a lillll different (throttle stop screw at the bottom, different float style 'plungers'). but even that seems swappable so I assume the engine is fine too.

Hi i recently bought a jog rr 2007, but it seems to have no bottom end power at all, I knew the previous owner so I know abit about whats been done to it. It was derestriced from new and rode with a standard exhaust, Then a technigas exhaust was fitted. I'm not sure if the fault started when the exhaust was changed but i do now that when the exhaust was changed it did not have a bigger main jet or new rollers fitted at the same time. When the bikes going along a flat road it struggels to get to about 30mph but then picks up to about 45 really fast??? Ive cleaned out the carb, replaced the spark plug and cap and cleaned the air filter but still the same. Do i need to repla…

Hi everyone, I have a 89 SR125 which is having problems with the idle speed. I have checked the Timing, Chain Adjuster, Tappet gaps (Inlet 0.05 mm, outlet 0.15mm), Air Filter Cleaned. There is no air getting into the system. The carb has been cleaned to an inch of its life, all holes blown and cleaned). The pilot screw has been loosley seated and turned out 2 full turns (throttle free play well within limits. I have started to adjust the idle screw and the engine will happily idle at 2400 and above revs but as soon as I start to turn out the screw to reduce the revs then the engine will stall and die. I can run the engine happily but as soon as I come to a stop i…

Hello All, I am going to purchase a new carburetor for my XS400 because one of the posts supporting the float pin has broken off. I found someone with an old carburetor they are willing to sell. All they can tell me is that the carburetor is for a 1980 XS360/400 Twin. My specific bike is a 1980 XS400G with vin number 3F8. I have not heard of the Twin model, does he perhaps mean a twin carb? Does anyone know if all XS model bikes in 1980 used the same carburetor? Thanks, Adam

Hi, I have a 1999 Yamaha SR125 (23,000 miles) I got it as a nonrunner, It had sat in a garage for 5 years not being used. I have put a new battery in it, new spark plug, a oil & filter change, the air filter looks good, cleaned the carb, new fuel, cleaned the side stand cut off switch. Wrapped insulating tape round the rubber between the carb and inlet, it's cracking but not all the way thru. It starts (just, it seems to run better on a warm day, than the cold of night?). When it's idling, if I open the throttle normally the engine slows down and dies. If I open the throttle a fraction the revs pick up a wee bit and the engine dies again. I …
