I asked on dotheton, but just thought I'd ask here too since Yamaha folks have always been great. My friends '74 cb450 had a variety of issues. I had to clean his carbs as his bike started to run bad, and he let it sit for too long which gunked up carbs. We then put on uni-filters since his stock air filters were breaking up, and we put a higher main jet for that air filter. Bike starts after 5-10 kicks, but stumbles/splutters. Idle mixture doesn't seem to help at all. Bikes symptons are: 1. Backfires occasionally out of right exhaust. Sounds like a gunshot hehe. (read that lean or rich conditions can cause it, but idle mixture seems to be fine). 2. Has a noise …

Hi, can anyone throw any light on a problem I am having with the oil seals on a 535 virago please? I have searched the topic and nothing relevant found. I did the fork seals on the bike 2 years ago, and it was a job to get the oil seals in enough to get the wire retaining clips on, and when I did the dust seals didn't quite sit down right. I've blown a seal again, I ordered some off evilbay, and again it won't go in far enough to get the clip in. In fact I just destroyed one trying. I took it out, got out the vernier and measured up, and it seems this set of seals and the last set I had are too thick by about 2mm. The seals I have are .4" thick, or around 10mm. I have …

How would a faulty fast idle solenoid cause my YBR 125 to keep cutting out when sat idle? I`m still trying to work out my problem with my YBR 125 before i have to finally take it to the main dealer at £35 an hour and a £60 diagnostics check!!! I think a fault with my fast idle solenoid, or the sensor related to that has caused my bike to keep cutting out. When the engine is cold it starts up fine...... then as soon as it gets warm it custs out and will not start. I`ve checked everything and i think it`s the fast idle solenoid. But as a complete novice, i`m not even that sure of the function of the fast idle solenoid!! My problem can`t be cured by adjusting th…

Hello all, I just picked up a 1982 XJ650 Maxim and I need some recommendations for swapping out the rear shocks. Either mine are shot (likely since I think its the original set) or its just not as still as I'd like. I've got them set on the stiffest possible setting and its not getting the job done. I noticed the XJ750's have a different style rear shock, are these better? or are they even compatible? Any help would be appreciated.

hey guys, I've been trying to diagnose why my DT125 LC Mk3 has suddenly stopped working after it was left for a few months over the winter. The engine doesn't start at all and therefore, as far as a beginner like me understands, it's either a problem with the spark, or with the mix coming into the engine. So, I tried to see if the plug sparked whilst outside of the engine, and as far as I could tell it didn't. After playing around with the multimeter, I decided to replace the ignition coils, and the spark plug. Seemingly, still no spark. At the same time, I'd been advised that maybe the jets in the carb had become blocked, so leaving the electrics for a while, I…

Okay this is what happened : I rode the bike, then I got home and it started raining, I did not cover the bike (bad choice i know) it rained for 3 days straight, then it stopped and I said i'll go ride! I turn on the bike turn on the choke so that the engine can heat up before I leave with the bike, everything starts normally, bike has high RPM to heat up the engine, then all of a sudden the bike lowers the RPM slowly and then it turns off, then I try to start up again and the bike tries to start but it wont start. so far this is what I have tried : 1 - Changed all 4 CR8E NGKR Spark plugs (4 new ones installed) STILL DOESNT WORK. 29.00$ 2 - Checke…

Ok as some of you may know i was messing about with a motor a few days ago. Well the motor was from a very rusty Powervalve Servo from a sachs xtc 125 ( Yam DTR engined). I thought i would post my findings in case it helps someone else out. Ok so it started when i realized the Servo wasn't turning at all while the bike was running. Upon investigation i found it to be rusty and seized solid. It was raining out so i thought i would entertain myself and try and fix it. Pulled the motor out, opened it up and coated it with WD40 in hope that would loosen it up. Well it did, but not all of it, so as I forced the motor round to free it up it went with…

Hi, new to forum, and as i have a yamaha i thought i would give it a go. I have owned many bikes in the past, mostly yamaha's, but now me and the missus are starting a family, and i was not allowed to get another big bike but she gave in and let me have a scooter (cheap, less chance of me killing myself, etc etc). I finally found a nice clean tidy example Majesty 250 S reg for £700, goes like stink (not like my R1 used to) and she likes going on the back for a change!! Ok, finally down to my question. I am a bit of a gadget freak and a letter dropped on my door step from the old bill, stating that a lot of scooters below 400cc are high risk items being stolen on our e…

when doing a valve clearance on my yam sr 125 i done as the manual said and lined the [T] mark on the rotor rim to the arrow on the crankcase. the valves were closed tight so set them to the manual setting.started it up and they rattled like fu k.tried again, this time testing piston was at tdc by putting a plastic tie in the spark plug hole.now a mark on the cam chain sprocket seemed to line up with another but the [T] mark was way off.valves were way too lose so set them again this time its ok.is my timing off.the bike is back to the same as it was[dies if you give it throttle].

Last week, I got myself a 92 600 Diversion which starts no problem and has plenty of power. The problem is, when its idling, it backfires every few seconds. Also, when I rev it beyond 5k, it belches black smoke out. I took the plugs out and they are black and sooty which to me says way too rich. The haynes manual however states that you cannot alter the mixture screws. as they are set at the factory. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this same question initially in the wrong forum (it's an age thing) so here it is again and hopefully in the correct forum:- My XV110 has no oil pump chain tensioner and the chain seems quite slack. Haynes Manual says there is a tensionsioner which is part the chain cover but I've heard elsewhere the later models (mine is 1986) do not have a tensioner. Shall be grateful if anyone can say for sure whether my engine should have a chain tensioner or not.
