heya peeps. been using the XJ for almost a month now without too many problems, sorted out my regulator, got my heated grips installed and all is now well, however there are a few little problems i would like to get sorted out. firstly, at around 5000rpm there is a noticeable increase in vibration, this goes away at around 6000rpm but the bars still vibrate at any revs and after 3-4 hours this makes my little finger go numb, is there a cause for this and how can i fix it? second, the bike has been stood for a bout a year before i had it and about 8 months after i bought it, i suspect the carbs may need balancing, would age cause them to go out of balance an…

Hello all, My '00 XJ600N has recently developed an annoying habit of refusing to start. The bike will be in neutral, light will show, side stand down and clutch lever pulled in; and when I go to start him the starter motor won't turn over and all I get in the oil light coming on. A mate suggested the clutch switch and he cleaned and lubricated it to get it going again. However this time the bike will not start again and I have opened up and cleaned the starter switch, cleaned and lubricated the clutch switch and tried to clean and lubricate the side stand switch, all with no success of getting him going. Does this sound like either the clutch or side stand swit…

Hi Guys, I'm back with another fault Thanks for all your help getting me back up and running in the past, I hope you can get me out of trouble AGAIN! I look the bike out at the weekend and when i put it back in the garage I noticed a tiny drip of coolant coming out of the bike, I found it to be coming from the water pump gasket, it was quite late on Saturday afternoon so knowing nowhere would be open to get a new gasket and wanting it back on the road for Sunday , i phoned my local Autopart place and got a sheet of gasket paper. I knocked up a new gasket and filled and bleed the system, everything went fine and i left it tick over for 20 min's to make sure t…

My CT 175 used to run great, after some time in storage, it starts up perfectly and will run ok with the choke on, but as soon as I push the choke in (to turn it off), it revvvs like a maniac and stalls. Two different people told me that it had to be a leak in the rubber boot, but I've checked and rechecked and don't think there's a leak there anywhere. Any other ideas?

Ok so my bike just suddenly stopped starting on the electric starter (no kick start). Started in the morning, I drove to work. After work it wouldn't start. It was my first time at work with the bike and a few people went out to look so I assumed they flooded it as I forgot to turn the fuel off. So I turned the fuel to off and hit the starter for a bit until the bike got a bit of life ( around 10 min later).. turned fuel on and it started very weak, then built up. I assumed the problem was flooding so drove home no problem, parked the bike up and ate dinner. Went to go out about an hour and half later. Same problem. I knew it wasn't flooded. But I turned fuel off …

Hello, I have a Yamaha Maxim 700 from 1986. I'm getting a high pitched noise, like the revving of a windup toy, when I am between 10 and 25 mph. It doesn't happen when idling or going slow, but it'll happen in any gear between 10 and 25 mph. I think it is coming from the engine, but I'm not sure. Any idea what this might be? James

Hello All, I have a general question about valve clearances. On a four cylinder engine you must rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees between measuring 'partner valves'. When I say 'partner valves' I mean something like Intake on Cyliner 1 and Intake on Cylinder 4. Or the exhaust on cylinder 2 and the intake on cylinder 3. My understanding is that the camshaft lobes are 180 degrees apart on these 'partner valves', does this mean that a 360 degree turn of the crankshaft corresponds to a 180 degree turn on the camshaft? This is a 4-stroke engine, btw. Also, how do you verify that you are at TDC of cylinder 1? Is it when the cylinder is at its highest position. …
