Started messing about with the XS as soon as I got it. It's ratty and strange but that's the way I like them. Starting to cut things off: Stripped down, ass ugly: Hard tailed, sportster tank, seat mocked-up, long way to go:

Anyone you read my last post- She Lives!!, will know that after getting my XS400 running I had a problem with fuel leaking from the overflow of the right carb. I was advised the problem could be from the carb seals or float needle, or from the petcock. Looked on ebay at rebuild kits, and considered even another set of carbs, but decided to strip the carb one last time before I spent more money ( my budget for the project has already doubled!) On the float there is a small tab that, when the float rises, the tab pushes up a valve that controls the amount of fuel entering the float chamber. The tab in the leaking carb was almost flat, while the one in the other carb …

Hey all! New here and I recently picked up this winter project. I've done quite a bit to it since I bought it a couple weeks ago, but it still has a long way to go. What I'm having a problem with right now is the battery staying charged. It's basically draining faster than I can charge it. I would assume this is a coil or mag problem as I couldn't find any shorts. Any ideas are appreciated. And here's the bike in it's current state -chris

After a few days of refusing to fire up, my XS400 slowly starts to show signs of life. After some confusion with wiring( thanks for your help, Drewpy!), I was still convinced the problem was electrical. Today I decided that it would run this week, as winter is fast approaching and there won't be many good riding days left. Checked a few posts on here to see where to start, and set about it. Thought I should start with the carb, left hand carb was fine, jets clean, opened up the right carb, the float was stuck and the rubber diaphragm ( is that what it's called?) was not seated correctly. Put it back together, checked the float was working smoothly, put it back on the …

Hi All, I'm fixing up my old 1978 YZ-80 for my son. It will make a great new-to-him ride just as soon as I get it back into running trim. The fork oil is 31+ years old and I have a sneaky hunch that it probably could use a change. I don't have the service manual so am hoping somebody can advise me on the following: - What is the recommended change procedure? - What's the recommended viscosity fork oil to use? - What's the oil capacity of each fork? The fork seals seem OK, they are not leaking despite their age. TIA for the replies! Daryl

I tried searching for the coating in the form, and either I missed it or I just suck. I will take either. What can I do to clean the engine and the transmission up if the original coating is gone?

At the risk of sounding like a drongo...where do the throttle cables go for my new Mikuni VM carbs? I know they go through the top but aren't sure where they 'attach' to, do you thread it through the needle retainer plate or something? Cheers

The cam chain adjuster on my '84 xs400 maxim just has 1 bolt in the center of the adjuster, how does this style work to adjust the chain? Is it automatic or do I need to loosen the center bolt for it to snug up? While adjusting my valves I noticed some extra play in the chain but the manual doesn't decribe how to adjust it.

Never owned a kickstart before. Having difficulty starting. Seems like every 20 kicks I get it started. Sometimes not at all. What is the procedure? Gas on. (what is the pri on the gas valve?) Ignition on. Choke on. (how much?) Clutch off. In neutral. Control lever off. Kick indicator window shows white. Kick. Do I give it some throtle? Bumpstarting it only works sometimes too. Am I missing something? Does anyone have the Owners Manual online? Eric

Just wondering if my 1978 xs 400 can be repacked, it has 3 pop rivots on the back of each muffler so I would think so, but I'd like to confirm before I drill them. Thanks in advance.

Just thought I'd pop in and say hello - lots of great info on vintage in here! I recently bought a Yamaha DT 250 MX from '80 - I'm excited about fixing it up during this winter and hopefully it will be fully restored come spring. I've included a few pics, just to show you how it looks today.
