Hello all, I am new to this forum and to this particular bike when replying consider me to be a decent mechanic but a complete moron when it comes to electronics and wiring I recently picked up a 1975 mx400 its in pretty rough shape and some idiot sprayed it camo but other than that it looks like it should be an easy one to get back on the road or well field/ trail just bought a new stator and cdi (both from 76-77 yz400's which I am told would work on my bike... babbits says so too but I wont know until I get some wiring done) now I just need to attempt to recreate some semblance of a wiring harness and go from there... only problem is like I said I am a c…

Hi, I am in the process of installing new contact points on a '74 DT175A. I have purchased 3 sets of points for this specific model and none of them fit. The rubbing block on the points will not touch the lobe on the flywheel, hence, I assuming, incorrect points. (no bump, no intermittent spark) The engine is original, numbers match, and the flywheel numbers are correct for this engine. I have elongated the attaching hole, filed points metal for clearance and still no rub on lobe. Obviously, I haven't gotten to the timing or points gap, yet. Any help earns eternal gratitude. Desperate! Many Thanks!

Looking for a new front fender for my 74 DT 125--it is silver/grey (plastic) and in shabby shape. Can't seem to find one in any better shape than mine. Any advice on where to get new one? Or can I paint the one I've got---and if so what kind of paint? Thanks a lot!

Hi,This is my first post on here and really need some advice! I have just built a cafe racer from a 1977 XS400, and have some confusion with some of the wiring. I will try to describe the problem as best as I can! The condencer has two black wires with a white box end, which is connected to the other white box connector from the wiring harness. From the same point in the harness is one gray and one orange wire with male ends, and one red/white wire with a double female end. From the ignition coils there are one orange (female) and one red/white (male) wire from each one. Unless I am mistaken, the red/white wires connect to the r/w double end. With me so far? Furthe…

Hi I'm working on reviving an old 1978 XS400. AT the front wheel there is a gap between the fork and the speedo drive, with the front wheel spindle in situ but not tightened. It looks as if there should be a spacer there. Anybody out there with a similar model know if a spacer should be there and how thick it needs to be? I'm thinking I might just measure the gap and try to make one up, but thought I'd check on the forum first. cheers Dave

Hey guys, I just got my 81 xs400 running YEAAAA. My friend helped me a great deal since he has a xs650 of his own. Anyways I come in need of help. I am trying to find out if the contact breaker cover sits on a gasket. I have a old haynes manual that covers xs 250's or whatnot to 400's so the general pictures looks like it needs a gasket. But when I look at bike bandit and drag up the parts, it does not show a gasket on it. So does it have it for my model or it does not? Also I need a engine bolt for the lower mount, does anyone know if earlier years can fit it? I bought some bolts off ebay and it seems a little short. Do latter years fit? and last but not least I am tryin…

I have heard, and read that these bikes have electrical issues. What I am looking for is anything any one has done to lessen these problems. As of right now I have found nothing wrong with the electrical systems, and would like to keep them working. I have seen replacing the fuse box with a modern one's that uses ato fuses. Is there any other mods to the electrical that help? Thanks, pez in ak

I am currently in the middle of rebuilding the engine in my 1986 Yamaha Radian. It used to be my dads old bike but he hydrolocked it and said I could fix it if I wanted. Well the exhaust is goint to the dogs so I thought I'd weld up a custom exhaust with a couple of Two Brothers cans from something. Doesn't really matter so long as the fit. So that's gonna open up the exhaust quite a bit and at the same time I was gonna do individual filters on the carbs to help airflow on that side too. What I was wondering is if anyone has ever done this or knows of anyone who's done this and what needs to be done about rejetting the carbs. I greatly appreciate all the help. Ja…

Hi everyone..this is my first time here. I have been reading you for a while, and I have recently purchased an XS400 from year 78. I want to make a cafe style bike out of it, and was wandering if these exhausts will fit. I'm planning to buy two conic air filters for the carbs as well, so I will have to rejet (do you call it rejet?...I'm spanish...) the carbs. I have also been looking for tires, and finally decided the Maxxis Cheng Shin C180...they are so cute... Any ideas are welcome!!

So I have pulled the valve cover and measured the clerance of the valves on my '84 xs400 maxim, only 1 intake was out of spec. I changed the intake shim and now it good but the exhaust valves are very noisy during warm up and not so bad once hot. You can still hear them tap even hot. So how could they be so noisy but still be in spec? I am taking my measurement when the lobe is directly opposite the shim.

Since my manual doesn't describe any way to adjust the timing chain I am wondering if someone here knows? I see the adjuster on the cylinder but I don't want to loosen it until I know what will happens. Thanks
