Hey all. Got a query about my dt175. It has 2 screws on the port side of the carby. One obviously idle. and the other? Mixture? I wanna get her running A"-Grade so im doing all the tweaks. I've already rebuilt it and converted the annotying 6volt system over to LED's (except the annoying AC side of things) and it's finally ready for rego. It runs well. but i recently relized i know SFA about tuneing a 2 stroke engine. I assumes it would be a metter of adjusting this screw and changing the mixture but the screw seems... hmm unresponsive would be the word. it dose make a difference but its irregular and hard to figure out. Just hopeing someone in here could paint a clear…

Hi there I hope some one may be able to help. I have just acquired what appears to be a late 60's early 70's single (maybe 100cc) it has the VIN H3- 305 405. I have spent a number of days searching the net to identify the bike. So Far no luck. I have tried http://cyclerestorer...facturer=Yamaha but the number is not there and the other sites I have found don't do the old 8 digit numbers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Alex

Hi. I have 2-1982 yamaha seca xs400rj's. Red and blue. The blue one is hard starting at times or when it is cool out, won't start at all.Cleaned the carbs ,changed battery ,starter ,plugs. Changed everything that would come off the bike (except the wiring harness ). Changed all those parts for the one on the red one (parts bike ). At the end of last summer, the blue bike would not start at all .As a last resort I changed the engine. Still is not right. The engine that would not run ,is now in the red bike ,with year old gas,.........and it started right up. What else can I try ?... What am I missing ??? Getting very disgusted ,probally going to sell them Thanks fo…

I bought a old xs and got it to start up. But with such a low price there tend to be quirks, the engine is blowing more smoke than hippies in woodstock. So drewpy and my buddy believes it is the valve seals and I am afraid to open an engine up since I have no experience. What would I need to do this? I am currently bidding on a complete gasket kit (with valve seals of course) and have a small set of wrenches. Can anyone direct me? or even come down and help me? I promise to buy you a case of beer!!

Hey everybody! First post on this forum. I just acquired a really nice xs400 today for $400 with 11k miles. It runs really well! The only issue I am having with it is that is it missing the entire front brake system. I just checked Ebay, and I didnt see any up for auction ( which leads me to believe that they are hard to find ) so I was wondering what the parts interchangability was between this bike and the other XS models close to its year. Will the brake systems from the larger XS's bolt up ( minus the 1100 because it is a 2 caliper setup obviously ) or am i stuck trying to find a functional XS400 front caliper system. Or, if push comes to shove, what other fork/triple…

I have a 1980 DT 175. The kick start was slipping and I tried everything I could think of to tighten it. I did not want to pay the $75.00 for a new one. I went to a bike boneyard and found another one for a few bucks and put it on. It still slipped so I figured the shaft was the problem. I have a welder so I welded it on to the shaft. Now to my suprise, I have ruined something else. Oh well, this is kinda how my life has gone so far. But anyways, I believe what I did was fry the oil seal. It seems to be leaking from the oposite side of the kick starter( The left Side) maybe where the spocket comes out. Anyone replaced the kick starter shaft and the oil seals in …

On my SR250 I need to replace (secondary) DRIVE CHAIN and SPROCKETS. The drive sprocket now has 15 teeth. The driven sprocket now has 40 teeth. The drive chain has 98 links now. When driving in 5th gear it shows 5000 revs at 70 km/hr Looking in the manual I found: Page 3-2: Drive sprocket (picture) 16 teeth. (On engine drive axle) Page 5-4: Driven sprocket (picture) 46 teeth. (On rear wheel) Page 7-8: Specs Secondary drive chain:: Type 520 DS :: 102 Links. My bike has plenty of pull and used 28 up to 33 km per litre when I drove over 1000 km with two up (73+53kg) and some luggage (~20? kg), from Eastern to Northern Thailand. Does anybody know factory recom…

hey all, im pretty new here...ok so this is my first post... either way i need some advice. i currently run a 1988 fz600, (not to be confused with the fzr600 (as most shops seem to think)) the back tyre has a nail in it and obviously i want to replace it. im thinking of the bridgestone bt45's but instead of a 120/80-18 tyre, (the stock size) i was going for a 130/80-18 tyre but not sure how thats going to affect the handling and grip. any suggestions? or if anyone knows where i can find a set of maxxis supermaxx sport tyres to fit please give me a shout. thanks, az

I couldn't pass up on it after seeing it on Craigslist since it was complete, in decent shape and it's a 400! That ought to be an upgrade from the 175! After having it for a few days, I discovered issues the seller kept his mouth closed about: --The bike is quite hard to start. I have to jump on the kicker and give it some gas in order for it to start within a reasonable amount of time. It takes about 6 kicks if I'm feeling lucky, but I've seen lots of these which start within one kick! I'll also add that it makes a loud hiss exactly like the sound of removing an air tool from a compressor if I hold the throttle open. Sometimes it backfires too. --Idle spe…

I have a 1980 DT 175 that has worked really well for me. It has leaked gas for several years and I have always just turned the gas valve off. However, it has slowly become harder and harder to start. The air filter was very dirty and I hate to admit it but It hadn't been changed in several years. I replaced the Air filter with a new one. I replaced the spark plug as well. I then cleaned the carburator out and put it back together. I replaced the needle and seat since I was sure this is what was causing the leak. After I put it back together, I was getting tons of gas comming out the exhuast pipe. I readjusted the float to 21 mm and this stopped the leaking. I adj…

Hey guys & gals, I just a free score on kijiji, a 1981 exciter 185, even came with sellers kit, and ownership, but no keys. so far bike is in good shape, lots of new parts. last night i used a paper clip to jump the ignition wires, bike turns over, but won't start, most likley the 2 year old gas, and dirty carb. i will fix both those, but i am wanting to take the tank off, so i can try to get some new fuel in the petcock, but can't seem to figure out how to remove the seat. sounds silly i know, but i don't want to damage anything, and wondered if there is a trick to it? also if anyone knows of a free online manual for this, that would be great. thanks, mike

hi guys -- i fired up that ct1 that i've been posting here about recently, and things didn't go that well. it popped and ran for about 5 seconds & then died. here are the issues it's having now -- i'd be grateful for any advice: 1. when we put gas in the tank & opened the petcock, gas flowed slowly thru the inline fuel filter (new) and to the top of the carb. after a bit, gas started coming out the fuel bowl overflow hose & then also out the fuel bowl vent hose. i assume this indicates the float valve's not closing (??). when i rebuilt the carb a few weeks ago (using an old keyster rebuild kit from ebay that had some different parts than were on m…

HELP! I just laid some cash out on a 1973 Tx 750 not knowing what it was. Now that I know, I wish I hadn't! 7900 mi. ( I thought it was a "low mileage" bike, but come to find out that FOR THAT PARTICULAR MODEL, it's HIGH MILEAGE! What MUST I do to keep it running? I'm in the process of having the oil filter cap machined. Bought 2 new mufflers and a used starter button. When i get the oil filter adapter made, I should be good to go. What's next? ANY and ALL information, and/or tips will be appreciated. How soon before she "Blows"!?

I have a 77' Yamaha xs360 twin that is certainly having some issues with the electric start. The problem is the wire going from the start switch is going directly to ground without pushing it, I have checked the wiring in the switch and its ok, (I know this because I followed the wire all the way to the solenoid with a meter). I have replaced the solenoid with a known good one and have a spare good one to boot. The symptoms are the same for both. When I jump directly from the positive battery terminal to the starter, the starter spins. There are two small wires going from the bike to the solenoid, one is red, which is the hot side and one is blue which goes directly to…

I've been putting back together a 79 XS400 and I'm almost done but now I've noticed the brake light does not light up. Its not the brake filament in the bulbs as I have a few different taillight assemblies and lots o good bulbs for testing. Neither the front brake lever nor the rear brake peddle light up the brake light. Should I replace the switches? I've seen both front and rear brake switches from Mikes for $6.00 each. Fuses are good-turn signals and running lights are good. I'm so close to being street legal-this might be my last obstacle(hopefully) Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks, Dave

hey, let me start by saying that I have the skills to rebuild a car engine but have never been inside a bike engine before... with that in mind I am still working on my 75 mx400... found that it had very little compression even after I fixed the "decompression" valve cracked it open and discovered that sometime in its life it decided to eat what I think is part of one of the rings.... needless to say not a pretty sight with metal everywhere top of cylinder and piston both have more craters and pits than the moon... I pressed out the piston pin (luckily I found the little clips before I tried it) and the needle bearings in the rod just slid out and c…
