Curious if a fiberglass gas tank is street legal (in PA) and will pass inspection? My friend seems to think not. This is the tank I might buy (guy uses them on alot of XS's/CB's so thought I'd give him a try): Guy uses "new polyester resins that are engineered much better than the old stuff plus as a precaution, are coated with phenol epoxy applied by hand before the tank is assembled, then once more after the tank is assembled, then I pour coat into the bottom around the seam". http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Norton-Manx-style-Cafe-Racer-Gas-Tank_W0QQitemZ200398599766QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2ea8aff656

Anyone have some of these, or any magazine articles of the 60's Yamaha twins in high resolution? I'm itching to read all I can about these bikes, and I find them interesting to look at.

Hey guys I thought I would like to show my progress of my xs400. Here is the hump I am struggling with. I was trying to cut small foam blocks and glue them together but they keep crumbling when I sand them. This is what it looks like so far. Excuse the tank it was a 5 min bomb job to see if the color scheme is good I think its too square? is the hump too far back?

I've just got a 1979 Yamaha Rs 100. I'm new to bikes and know pretty much nothing about them mechanically. On first starting it started fine but was on reserve fuel, after a few hundred yards (on the way to fill up) she spluttered, banged and stopped and upon filling up has refused to start again. Rubbish in the fuel tank has got to somewhere it shouldn't have? Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved!

I removed the spokes in the front rim to replace them thinking it would not be to difficult. Stupid me I did not take pictures or mark the rim with the spoke locations, now I am puzzled how to relace the rim. I can't seem to figure out the pattern or were to start. I really could use a little help. Thanks

Hello there I am new to both the site and motorcycles in general. I recently was given a 1982 Yamaha 400 Maxim, and need some help to track down some much needed parts. The bike was a parts bike but I have decided it isn't far from being road worthy. I am trying to track down all the handle bar controls minus the brake and clutch levers. I am also looking for a set of carburetors. Does anyone know what bikes are interchangeable with mine and what are good online sources for parts.

Hi everyone, I have faded and cracked gauge faces on my '76 xs500 and I am wondering if anyone knows how to disassemble them to replace the faces. A how-to guide would be awesome, or a video, or any tips really. Also, does anyone know where to find replacement faces for older yamahas? I've found lots of stuff for hondas, but not yams. Thanks

In the process of fixing 400, mounted rebuilt carb with "factory" settings. Right ignition point, was not opening, set with difficulty as outlined in Hayes. After lots of kicks and priming the cylinder with choke cleaner, engine started, but immediately ran up to red-line. After 5 or 6 starts it keeps doing the same thing.... does not seem to be flooding, any thoughts?

Hey all, Currently in the middle of a complete (well sort of anyway) tear down and rebuild of a 75 mx400… motor is set to go once I get the rest of the parts in the mail and I figured while I was waiting I would do a little repaint (previous owners thought rattle can camo was a good color for a classic bike)… I have seen the examples of the restored white mx400 floating around online however I have also heard rumors that these bikes also came in the “competition yellow???? The original color of my tank (sanded down bottom to figure it out) and plastics appears to be yellow too??? (yes I’ve checked the vin its not a 76 yz) though for all I know the tank and pl…

Hi all I was finally finishing dismantling my XS400 last night and was a removing the front end from the frame. I removed the headset and top yoke with no problems but the bottom yoke with the steering stem will only withdraw about halfway when it seems to get stuck. It feels like there is something on the steering stem that is hitting the inside of the bottom aperture of the neck. Should there be something on the steering stem that would prevent its removal? Is there a cup for the bearings that needs removing? Any help with this would be much appreciated. Caddy

I recently acquired a 1977 Yamaha XS500D It ran but very rough and had a top end of about 40 mph. I have cleaned the gas tank. pitcocks & carbs. Replaced needle valves & seats & one float. When replacing the plugs I discovered that one of the heads had been drilled out and a larger plug (diameter) was installed. I replaced the plugs with NGK plugs that according to the numbering system are the same depth and heat range. It finally ran good after I replaced the points and condenser. But only for about 20-25 miles then it started doing the same thing. I suspect the condenser is the problem, since the points still look good. Can anyone explain what might …

So... I building a cafe racer using the frame from an as1, the motor out of a ycs1 and the fuel tank off of a g7. It's all yamaha so steeze points for me. It has up pipes on it and they go right through where I want to mount my rear sets. I would like to buy some gyt ones but they simply don't exist anymore and the ones that are out there are being horded like jew gold. I've got dibs on a set of dg chambers for a rd 125 but I would have to cut the head pipes off and adapt them to my cylinders.... Ideas on a better way?
