My mechanic said i needed a 'rocker cap' since it looked like broke up and previous guy just glued it back on somehow. Not sure what this is or where to get one. I have a 1978 XS400 Thanks!

Hi I have a 1981 XS400 with the electronic ignition. I want to get new plug wires as the old ones look like they are original. I don't want to buy factory ones as they are expensive. I found a web site that has bulk wire and NGK plug ends. The only problem is the ends have different resistor ratings. I don't know what is the correct resistance for the stock wires. If my bike had points I wouldn't worry about it but I don't want to mess with the TCI unit. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have a 1988 Yamaha DT 50U. Do you guys know of anywhere i can find a piston kit or gasket kit for this liquid cooled hard to find parts for motorcycle???? Also do you know of any other engine that would fit the frame of this bike, say a yz 80 engine or something??????

  5. Help please! my seca has started making a whirring noise I can best describe as the sound a loose powersteering belt makes on car when the seca's engine revs. I thought it might be the oil I was running not working well with our winter temps so I changed the oil to a 10w30 non synthetic and it quieted down for a day or two but has come right back, the noise sounds like its coming from the cylinder side of the engine but as its internal theres no real signs I can diagnose. any ideas would be helpful thanks Ned Williams

  6. My bikes in the shop and had some rear brake issues. So I wanted to research it a bit... I saw on bikez.net that my bikes has a 'expanding' rear brake... not sure what that means... i was just curious what kinda system my bike has. I think there is a fluid container thing on the right side of the bike near the back, so i assumed before it was disc, but not sure anyway since i saw the words 'expanding brake'. Thanks!

Right, ive recently had a complete engine rebuild with 43mm piston put in instead of a 39mm, i had a complete new crank, con rod kit the lot. The job was done professionally and cost quite a bit... The first day out i went up a rather steep hill and i was told not to go over 30 mph for the first 500 miles... i was aproaching the hill in 5th and it started to loose power going neeeeeeeeeeeee, so i knocked it down a gear and it did the same through all the gears. Got to second gear and it conked out and skided. I told the garage and they just said was it a big hill? i said yes then they said well keep an eye on it because it is only little 60cc not alot of power..…

So as i disassembled my steering last night i was shocked to find how the bearings were done. Loose bearings sitting between the triple trees and the frame? I guess that's how it was done. Does anyone know if its possible to convert to a more modern setup like these? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-XS500-1975-to-1981-Steering-Stem-Bearings-Kit_W0QQitemZ360235691848QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item53dfb86f48 this is how the top bearing surface on the frame looked. Yes, these were toast. The steering felt like it had notches in it when i had all the forks and bars off it.

i need an exhaust sytem for my xs500 and i found jemco makes exhaust systmes for xs650s. But im not sure whether these parts are interchangeable. Tried looking online but no luck. I tried contacting jemco if they know about fitment but they're not familiar with xs500s and not sure of the exact measurements for fitment:( Does anyone know if the exhaust for an xs650 is compatible with an xs500? Any knowledgeable gurus out there that can help? Thanks. jemco exhaust

Just wanted to say a quick hello to all on this board, I recently purchased a 1976 XS500C for $300 and will be looking to get it road worthy. As has been said on this board, finding that parts for these are pretty scarce, but looking forward to giving it a go. Runs now, but a little noisy around the cam chain area.Hopefully will adjust out. Main issue is no title, so have to work this.

Does anyone have an opnion on how after market pipes for an RD250 would work on a RD200, aside from fitment issues. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  14. I have 4 bikes I have finally dug out to start putting together. For now I want to get at least 2 going. As I am looking at the bikes I noticed one has a different frame geometry to it, and the front brake is mounted reverse of the others, I can't make sense of it, the forks are at a steeper angle and the top tub (backbone) has a curve to it rather than a straight tube.. But... the serial number is right in line for a 72' JT2 60cc (JT1-321198..) I thought it might have been an MX but those those start with 0's! Other than that I can't find anything else thats different.. I also found a side cover with a slick factory looking block off cover for the oil injection pump.. …

  15. So I am getting almost finished with this bike mechanically and all that is really left is electrical wiring/rewiring of the turn signals and battery relocation along with painting the tank and seat. But I am super intimidated with tweaking the carbs. I am going to use stock headers with emgo dunstall replicas and mikes xs air filters. Does anyone know what I need to swap out? I tried running it before to see if the engine is proper and it would never idle without full choke and goes really high in rpms. Any help is appreciated, I would really want to get hands on with this to save money and gain experience in the long run.

Hi, I'm about to overhaul my carbs and I'm not sure what main jet sizes to use. The stock jetting for my Maxim is 115 right and 125 left but I can't figure out why the sizes would be different because the engine is symmetric. Even the intake cams appear the same. From what I have read, upping the main jet a size should help a stock bike and I'm not sure if I should try 117.5 right and 127.5 left or just 127.5 for both. A stock Seca also uses a 117.5 and 127.5. All of the 650 carb diagrams I have seen show the same size main jet for both cylinders. Has anyone experimented with using the same main jet on a Maxim or Seca 400? Thanks

Hi Everyone, I rode my '76 xs500 almost every day last summer, and I didn't stop riding unti december 1st 2009 (thats quite a feat for wisconsin!). All through the winter (december - february) I would start the bike up and let it run for a while, every couple of weeks. Usually the battery was dead, and I would kick it a couple of times and it would fire right up. The most recent time I started it was about 3 weeks ago, and it ran like a champ. Well I started to get the itch to ride again since it's beginning to get warm again, in order to do so I needed to replace the chain, and front and rear sprockets, they were pretty worn from the previous owner (they might have been…
