HI all, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I have been riding for about a year now (BMW K100 RT) and I just acquired an 1976 XS 360. I was wondering if it had any quirks? I also need some specs for the plugs, where to buy a proper stator and if anyone know if a "cafe" style seat available.

Hi I'm looking for suggestions as to where I could buy a valve adjuster screw and locknut for a 1978 XS400? I've tried my local Yamaha dealer but no joy there. On a ride last weekend the engine started running roughly, once home I went to check it over and re-set the valve clearances and I found one of the adjusters had vanished! I tried draining the oil and removing the sump plate, taking off the cam cover and poking around with one of those useful magnet on a telescopic rod thingys, but there was of sign of it. Thankfully no metal particles either. Next I took off with the head and barrels and removed and up ended the engine, thankfully that did the job and …

Will the xs400 tank from normal model fit specail frame? Or maybe tank from RD200 looks very similar to the tank from xs400 square type tank. Also I want to fit 2 in to 2 exhaust, my bike came with 2-1 motad exhaust, where can I find 2-2 pipes? Will pipes from another model fit xs400? Thanks in advance Gaz

**Edit** Well well I should have looked through the rest of the forums first. I just found the workshop one. Hiya all. This is my first post. I have a 77 DT-400 This is the first 2 stroke bike I've ever owned. It has 8k miles on it and it looks to be in pretty good shape. I want to get it looking and running great. I would like some help in locating repair manuals or repair procedures so I can start getting it in tip-top shape. Right now it starts great (now that I learned the trick to a kick start) and runs strong. When I'm driving it, unless I'm actually advancing the throttle, it makes a banging/knocking sound and it kind of jerks forward (like wh…

Hi, I am new to the club. I have been looking through the forums and can't believe the amount of help you all are willing to give. I just purchased a 1970 CT1 175 Yamaha. I owned one back in the 70's and just loved that bike. I am looking forward to tearing it down and rebuilding it. I can't wait to start. Can anyone help me with access to a shop manual? I would be a great help. Bob

Hi all, what are peoples opinions on "What is a classic"? My personal view is that it is something special that no body else had done or a new innovation that everybody else followed. My TR1 is classed as a classic by insurance companies but only because of it's age. I though age related to vintage? The bike itself is based on ideas taken from "Vincent" which in my mind built a few classics that are now vintage!!!! I hope you see where I'm coming from? just something to mull over this wintery weekend!! By the way, any more TR1 owners out there? Gary

As the title says, just want to make sure the crankcase, heads and all covers but the starter motor cover are aluminum. Yes? So after sanding away blemishes I shouldn't have to worry about corrosion/painting.

I'm about to buy a 1964 Yamaha yds3 for $1600. It is all original and complete, no dents in the tank, original paint is in nice shape (3.5 out of 5). Motor was professionally rebuilt and is a 4.5 out of 5 in appearance, 5 out of 5 mechanically. All the electrical works perfect, has new tires, and the seat is flawless. Overall I would say it is in very nice un-restored condition, and a great candidate for a full restoration Here are the negatives: -Chrome is not rusted at all, but has some dull spots where someone took a wire wheel to it. I would re-chrome everything -Pipes are structurally solid and aren't rusted at all, but do have some dings. They look nice ov…

I'm very happy to find this forum and the wealth of information it contains. Unfortunatley, the search engine won't allow 3 character searches, so CT3 and 175 are not pulling anything up. I've just been given a 73 CT3 175 that has resided in a neighbor's basement for the last 30 years or so. Cosmetically, other that filth, it is quite nice, but we have no idea yet of it's mechanical condition. I'm proficient in maintenance and repair of current day motorcycle internal combustion engines (you can see how many I have to deal with from my signature) but have little experieince with older bikes, especially 2-strokes. If anyone has experience with restoring this genr…

While I have the carbs open I was wondering if y'all thought it would be necessary to rejet seeing as I'm going to be sticking with the pod filters and gutted 2-into-1 exhaust. It has the stock 135/42.5 jets on right now. On a side note I found a pair of oem carb diaphragms for $20ish. (cheapest I found was $150 EACH on ebay) Might be able to get a couple more...anybody need any?

So I bought the bike with the crankcase and associated covers painted black. No bueno. I have since picked up an unpainted crankcase and all needed covers, unpainted. But they're all filthy, not to mention, my heads are very dirty as well. Any recommendations for cleaning said parts? Drewpy- how did you get your restored XS to look so perfect? (she's a beaut by the way!) Was the engine painted after cleaning? If so, what paint? Thanks all!

Hey guys, I have been buying up and restoring/selling vintage Jap bikes for a little bit now and I need to know exactly what I'm working with here. I picked up a 1979 Yamaha XS400 roller (complete frame/engine/wheels/brakes) without a tank or seat/seat pan. I'm thinking its a XS400 Special which is sort of a bummer because I want to build up a plain XS400 for a sportier bike. I can't complain though, I scored the whole thing for $60. I disassembled the bike before ID'ing it exactly but here is a picture of the bare frame. My main concern here is this: If I source the seat pan and tank from a regular XS400 will I have to heavily modify the frame to fit those pie…
