For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Howdy folks. Just joined the club... And I have a few questions... I just got my hands on a nice FZ 750. I'm wondering; how does one upgrade the running gear on these easily? Are there any fatter rear wheels, shocks, forks etc. that fit with few or no mods? It's an '89 model, with the 3 spoke wheels. Here's pics: http://www.skoop-tech.co.uk/pics/fz Also, I'vce noticed that (especially with a cold engine) the gearbox is a right b!tch. Can barely get her from 1st to 2nd, etcetera, until she's properly warmed up. And even then, she's a wee bit clunky. She prefers shifting on slightly elevated revs, so not at fully closed throttle? PO said she needed …

hey guys i justed joined the site in hopes that someone could help me out. last year i was rewarded with my dads 78 SR-500. its an awesome looking bike, the deal was if i could get it to run then it was mine. long story short it took replacing the battery, a new spark plug, cleaning out the carb and buying a new needle valve to get it to turn over and run. so i once i get it running it was blowing out black smoke. my dad suggested let it run for a while and just in case its needs to get all the old junk out.(it hadnt been started in 10+ years) so i thought it might be old gas so i drain the tank and carb to fill the bike up with some new gas. well its still running…

Hi! I keep reading you can improve performance on a RXS100 by fitting a K&N air filter. I email them and they say they don't make one for the RXS100 - it obviously can be done tho... does anyone know which K&N filter to choose and how exactly you'd fit it as never done that before.... any help appreciated... 8. Hey all, I recently picked up an 81 xs400 that the previous owner had begun converting to a cafe racer. I'm continuing with the conversion, but need to straighten out some other issues first. One cylinder will fire when in higher rpms but not while idling. I thought this would be an issue with the main jet, but after a thorough cleaning of the carbs, it still happened. Then I turned to the leaky exhaust, fixed the leaks, and it still happened. I have noticed that the diaphragm of the corresponding carb has some pinhole leaks, so maybe at idle there isn't enough vacuum for it to run? Anyways, replacement diaphragms are as expensive as complete used carbs, so i was cons…

  9. Started by CT1,

I am in the process of restoring a 1971 CT1. I am lubricating all the cables with a cable luber tool and fluid. The problem I am having is separating the connector (plastic cylinder) where the throttle cable goes in and it splits into 2 cables; 1 for the carburetor and the other for the oil injector pump. I cannot open the plastic cylinder to be able to lube the cables individually and I am afraid by forcing it I will break it. Any thoughts/help with this? Thank you.

  10. Started by mtnmason,

I heard about this dreaded affliction awhile back on another forum. I wondered if anyone here was familiar. The beautiful cocktail shakers on my 77 rotted through after 15 years dormancy in a barn. That is the only rust whatsoever on the bike. There is one hole in the bottom of each one, the left being worse. I patched that with Quicksteel and it worked to some degree. It pops and spits in quite an unbecoming way when I pull to a stop - sounds great under load. I cant bear the thought of having to replace them, but they need to go. I dont have the equipment or technical ability to cut them open and weld them back together. Has anyone used these? They're a tad pricey…

I Just got a 78 xs750 and it did not come with an air box. I was concerned and wondenring if anyone know if this bike will start and run without the air box connected. I can seem to get it to, I dont know if it is the actual carbs or the box I just wanted to be sure before I just dove in. If anyone has had the bike running with the box off or if it does not run please inform me so I can start this project. Thanks Bryan

  15. Started by plain old dave,

Just spent @45 minutes or so trying to kick the ol' XS through. Got completely out of energy, and all of a sudden I noticed the Neutral light was dim. Cut the headlight off and it got brighter. Took the thing down to Auto Zone and turned out to present 11.5 volts with no load, and I learned HERE that that means the plugs will not fire. Right now I am charging the new battery (the old one was a Wal-Mart EverStart, probably the worst battery made for any motor vehicle), and I should be able to go for a jaunt later this afternoon. Thanks again to the best source for vintage Yamaha info on the Web.

Has anyone ever seen a mono-block 440 cc yamaha from the mid 1970's I am looking for one.

I hope someone can help me with this wiring nightmare. When I was removing the front end off of the bike I marked and labeled everything with numbers on bright green tape as you can see in the pictures. I ended up missing one since it was getting dark (few days before not in the pic) and when I try to figure out what goes where I cannot find the missing link. It is a black wiring that is coming from the left side and I believe it is for the blinkers/headlight. I have dotted it yellow, so where does this go? How can I organize this mess?

the saga of me putting together an XS400 out of junk bits continues!!!! However i had a bit of luck today ... i thought that i was going to need to replace the fork-seals.. but i dont need to. i pulled the fork-leg dust covers off today and the seals were nice and clean & dry. most of it`s there now such as a running engine in the frame, all the electrics appear to work, both brakes function, seat, tank, carbs, exhaust...i`ve even changed the oil & filter!!!!and no swarf in the spent oil she will never win a beauty contest, but i will feel an enormous sense of achievement if i get her to the MOT station under her own steam NOW does anybo…
