Hey All, I just bought a Yamaha XS400 1980. I need to replace the air filters that are inside the air boxes. I was thinking about getting air pod filters but I read that I would have to re-jet the carburetors. I am trying to make this as simple as possible so I would just like to purchase the stock air filters. I do not believe that stock air filters are made anymore so I was going to get a sheet of UNI air filter paper and make my own. I do not think it will be difficult because I still have the metal frames that go inside the air boxes so I just need an exacto knife and a glue gun. Does this seem like an OK idea? What type of UNI Air Filter paper should I purc…

  3. I saw MikesXS had BS34 carb parts (for their 1980-84 xs650 models though). And was just curious if they are interchangable since my 1978 xs400E i believe is the same Mikuni carb model? Here are the links to their main/pilot jets... http://www.mikesxs.net/products-38.html#products http://www.mikesxs.net/products-39.html#products Also Do you guys usually buy 1 jet size smaller and bigger so you can jet? or it isn't unusually to get 2 sizes bigger/smaller if you re-jetting. Thanks, Arian

  4. Hey guys, I posted in an old thread bout other coils, but thought I'd create new thread as no one responded.... Saw someone bought mikesxs coils to replace their old 78 XS400 coils, which is my bike (think mine and mikesxs coils are both 4ohm resistance so think they should work fine?) ... Product 17-6805 here: http://www.mikesxs.net/products-27.html#product-17-6805 ... What wire and cap from that site should I buy to make it work? I saw some 5K Ohms and 1K Ohms caps there and I dont got a clue about the electronics aspect. Also the stock 78 xs400 condensor is fine with those new coils? Thanks!, Arian

Hello, Thought I'd say hello, just picked up a neglegted, but complete V plate DT-e125, only one owner, bit of a barn find (leaky barn by the looks of it) The bike is only showing 3 thousand on the clock. Will be on the hunt for a replacement tank and seat for certain, (are they the same on the 175?) When I remember my photobucket login, I will post some pics My missus is gonna kill me!

Hi, I'm having problems with the Carbs coming away from the boots thus letting in air. I can't tighten the sercuring ring any tighter as this distorts to boot creating the same problem. Anybody got any ideas? Cheers Gary

Anyone know what I have to do to remove the throttle cable from the handlebars of the XS? Do I need to remove the grip first? It appears from the outside to only be held in by a screw, is this true?

  12. Started by SirBieber,

So i bought a new taillight to replace that huge one in the back. The new one only has one bulb and requires 3 wires instead of the orignial one having 2 bulbs and six wires. I rerouted the wires under the fender to the end, and hardwired 3 of the original 6 wires to the new taillight. The taillight works fine now, but somwhere along the way (dont know when wasn't paying attention) i lost my headlight. My bike also originally had a light to light up the license plate, and i have just taped that off. Along the way I also blew through 2 fuses but those are now replaced. Its not the bulbs becuase neither high or low beams will work. the headlamp light on the dash is lit up. …

I got my new shift shaft, and i for the life of me cant get the old one out. The right side(if youre sitting on it), is giving me some trouble. I got everything removed(covers, pedals etc) and i see both sides of the old shaft, but I cant get it out. I think I need to remove the clutch?.. its a cylinder lookin thing with teeth and has a bunch of plates that alternate between having teeth and not having teeth in it, and its blocking the removal of the shift shaft. advice?

sad day, my clutch is strating to slip in the higher revs. when im in 5th gear and at 5k if i go WOT it jumps from 5 to 7k still holds its own speed wise just seems to get to top rev a bit faster than before. so i figured that i may need a new clutch. or parts therein. it started out when i put fresh oil in the box and yes im sure that i used the right stuff. its the same stuff i have been using for the past year and a half. while i was at it i put in a new spark plug, at first i thought that it was just running better, but the gearbox is getting kinda hot. i dont smell burned oil when i take off teh fill cap, but.. anyway, i know that many of my friends here with dt'…

  16. hello, my name is Derek but call me Dirka. ive been riding since i was about 12, started out beating around in the dirt on the farm with a '86 KDX 80, then a '89(i think) YZ80, and finally a '91 YZ125. that satisfied me till i turned 16 and could hit the streets legally. so thats when i got me a 79 honda CB500 custom. i rode that thing as often as i could till '04 and sold it back to the guy i bought it from for the same price i paid. in '02 i went a little crazy and bought a new CBR 600 F4i. that thing was a blast to ride especially in the twisties. they dont call them rockets for nuthin. i ended up selling that one too back in '04. then i went the next 5 years bikeless.…

  18. What would be the biggest issue with adding a new exhaust, probably just mufflers, to the bike? I've been looking at some of the mufflers on MikesXS, and was wondering how much work would be involved. Thanks again.

Hi, New to the forum and first post. Just got a 1980 XS400 Special a week and a half ago. Had a Baby Honda Dream 150 more than 40 years ago then a few scoots during the past few years - last one a Linhai Mainstreet 300. My son bought an '81 XS400 Special II about a month ago and I fell in love with it when I first saw it. Found a decent one in N. Central PA almost immediately. Went to see it and ended up hauling it home. I wanted one that was in fairly decent condition, not needing a total restoration before I could ride it. The bike had 14,2xx miles on it and was kept in nice condition for a 30 year old motorcycle. It is in good enough shape that I can ride it as is wi…
