Hi, it has been a long while since I have been on but here is my question; My 1983 maxim 400 has blueed exhaust pipes where they hook up to the engine. Could this be because of sticking exhaust valves or timing? I have been thinking of getting a new exhaust but dont want to if they are just going to over-heat. My other question is that between 3k - 4k RPM it hesitates pretty hard going up small hills. Is that normal, or is there a problem with the carbs? Let me know guys. Thanks!

Hey i just bought a DT 175 locally for 140 bucks. It's missing quite a bit. Here's the quick run down list that i made. Oil Injection cap Mounting bolts Injection lines Rear Fender bolts Kick stand Left foot rest Rack bolts Ignition switch screws Shifter seal Kickstart seal Handle bar bolt Handle bar grips Brake lever Chain guard "Exhaust Guard" air box screws and filter Front shock seals flywheel cover screws So not all that bad. Also been trying to narrow down why i don't have spark. I just ordered a manual, and i'm already leaning towards points and condenser. I unplugged the kill switch, tried a few different plugs, wiggled every wire ima…

I was thinking about going up one jet size for the pilot and main. At this point it would be for running stock set up. Anyone think this will cause the bike to run too rich? As it stand now I have the mixtures turned out about 4.3 turns. I figure that if I get the new jets, I still have quite a bit of wriggle room with the mixture screws. Thanks

Well there I was wondering if anybody had bypassed the Ignition box on a 1981 xs400s (or the like)? I just found a few prices that are more than the bike itself for a new unit lol! Being an electronic ignition can I use say like a Pertronix box maybe and some aftermarket coils? Anybody have any thoughts on this? thanks - Mike

Hello all. New guy here. Im going to be picking up a 82 XJ550 this weekend and figured this would be a good place to get info on it. Im getting it for $400 and it seems to be in pretty good shape. The guy parked 15 yrs ago and says he hasn't driven it since. The only real damage I've seen is a spot on the muffler that has rusted through. The tires are still in pretty good shape and don't seem to be dry rotted. I figure Ill have to change out the fluids and do a bit tune up work to it. Does anyone have any tips for dealing with one of these bikes such as things to watch out or where to find a manual for it? Ill try to post up pics when I can.

Would like some clarification about exhaust pipes on the XS400 series. The pic below is of the muffler on my son's '81 XS400. The muffler on my '80 XS400 does not have the four holes in the end. I have seen pics that look the same as that of my son's as well as ones that look like mine. Was one optional or were these holes drilled after the bike was bought to make the exhaust freer flowing? They look to perfect to be done later, though. Would the carb jetting then be different on bikes w/holes in the muffler end? Thanks!!

I bought a 100/90-18 a while back for my wife's 82 xs400. It won't fit on the stock 1.60x18 rim so I'm going to relace it with a 2.15x18 rim. I know that it will be a tight fight, width, and height wise. I also know it's going to throw the speedo off a little. Do I need to worry about handling though? Will the extra 18mm on the diameter change the handling characteristics? Thanks In Advance!!

Hey guys, I need your advise on updating my disc brakes. I have been tinkering with the idea of applying some Brembo front and rear discs and caliper kits on my bike build, but I'm really not that crazy (or financially able) to buy them at the price they go for. Does anyone know of a kit that is similar or equivalent to the Brembo's that I can use to upgrade my brake set-up? I thought about drilling my current discs but I am not sure how cool that would really look. Any help or leads would be appreciated. Thanks Christian BTW, this was my inspiration Wrenchmonkees XS500

I have been seaching the net, and getting mixed results. Some verbal advice which is "iffy". With respect to an XV920 roadster i.e. NON Virago. I think I have learnt there was a "TR 1" which displaced 981cc and the XV920 which is a 920cc bike. Correct? Also that the 920 was not imported to Australia only the TR1? However, I'm looking at an XV920 with a kilometres speedo, despite the fact the bike seems to come from Canada? Also it has an Australian compliance plate. A local boffin told me "these 920's were 1000's anyhow"? Doesn't seem logical to me. Yamaha Australia have confirmed it's 'not Australian', and suggested maybe an independent state distributor imported the bike…

Projects are back on hold for a bit, and i suspect that over the winter i'll be finishing both 500s. I'm curious about batteries, and how small i can go. My specific idea at the moment is to create two separate systems for the cafe bike. There would be one system for running the engine, and one to run the lights and gages. so for running the engine, how small of a battery would be acceptable? Obviously 12V, but what amp/hr rating. No electric start, just kick start. Recharge system obviously will be retained. My logic here is to then convert every light on the bike to LED and be able to run a lower voltage system for all lights and gages, and just have to recharge the…

Hey all. Has anyone heard if there is a hydraulic clutch kit for the xs models? I can find kits for the FJ series but not the XS. Would it be worth the time and money for the kits or is there any way to make the clutch engage more smoothly. It feels like I am pulling a 20 pound weight when I pull the clutch lever. Any help would be awesome.

Hi All, I am working on an 82 XJ 650 and having an issue I cant seem to figure out. Before I start tearing things apart I thought to check here. The #1 cylinder is dead. The bike will only run when choked and is very rough. If you pull the plug caps off while running they all have an effect on the idle except #1. Also gas is spewing from the exhaust on that side of the engine, lots of it. So far what I have done: Changed plugs -- no change Checked compression -- fine Checked for spark on #1 wire and plug -- it has it The bike has only 8500 miles on it and is in other wise very good shape and seems to be well maintained, only ridden by a woman. Could …

Hey, I'm newly registered here but I've been looking around a lot and you seem like a helpful bunch so I thought I'd bring my troubles here so please bear with me. I just recently acquired a 1982 Yamaha XS[XJ maybe?] 400 Maxim. I believe it's actually an XS400J but I'm not 100% positive on this. Anyway, this is the first bike I've ever had and it didn't start when I got it. I bought a new starter because the old one was shot. Now the starter works but it still doesn't run. Electrical system seems to be working fine and all that but I took the carbs out to clean them as the bike had been sitting a while with fuel in it. They didn't really seem dirty at all but I cleaned…

Hi everyone! This is my first post here- I've been reading threads for a while, and I've been really impressed with the helpfulness of the answers. Hopefully my problems aren't too terrible... prepare yourselves. About a month ago, I bought a '78 XS400 in okay condition. When I got it, it would run if it was choked all the way, and after it warmed up you could let the choke back in to about halfway. It had a pretty rough idle, and it would stall out if you left it for too long. I didn't know it (it's my first bike), but it's also pretty sluggish - I have to really let in the choke slowly when I'm starting out in first gear to avoid bogging the engine down, and it takes…

Hey everyone. New to this site but the info i've seen has been priceless. Here's my problem. I rebuilt this bike from the ground up. It had sat for years in an old barn. I rebuilt the motor, carbs and pretty much everything else. I put everything back together and it ran great for about a day or two. No whenever I turn the key on the main fuse blows. I read on one of the threads here to hook up a 12v light to the main fuse and if it lights up it is still shorting. I got the light to shut off but any time i hit the brakes or turn on the turn signals it trips the fuse. Once i shut the turn signal off or let off the brake the light goes off. I've taken the wiring harness of…

I have been looking for some new mufflers for my 1976 XS 360. I found this site http://www.procycledepot.com/content/p/8/catid/9516/pid/85406/LEO_VINCE_SITO_MUFFLERS?item=1698453 that has a set of Leo Vince Sito mufflers for the 1977 XS 360. My question is: Does anyone know for sure that the 1976 and the 1977 XS 360's are compatible? Does anyone know where else I could look to find some new mufflers for a 1976 XS 360? I have done a lot of searching on my own, but I wasn't able to find much. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony

I was lookin at a few bikes on ebay. 3 seperate auctions. one auction for two 70's dt 100's, one auction for 2 suzuki rms and one for 3 part bikes with out motors, or much else really. Those were a 70's kx 250 from the looks of it, and maybe two dt's. I lost the 3 But won the rm's and the dt's. My plan was to try and get one running bike out of each pair and then part out the rest of the other one. I'm going to get them on sunday, i gotta rent a uhaul and drive about 500 miles to get em but i'm down for an adventure! and the price was definately right for all 4. The zuk's are a litle odd by looking at the pictures, First off the guy said that they looked like a 175…
