For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by mackeil,

Hello, I have a 1980 Yamaha XS400 Special that I have owned since 1986...Lately, it has started this irractic idling and racing engine, I have narrowed it down to a vacuum leak from a shaft seal on the carburator...On each carb there is an E-clip, fibre washer and behind a small black seal which is old and dried out, the source of my vacuum leak..I went to our local Yamaha dealer to try to order replacement seals but was told that the there was no parts listing for that seal because it was a factory installed part and I would have to order an entire new carb to fix my problem...Does anyone have a more realistic solution to my vacuum leak? Is there an aftermarket seal ava…

I took apart, cleaned and reassembled my carbs today to see if i could get it running again, was just running fine about a week or so ago. Before and after i cleaned them when i would try to start it after a while fuel would come out of the inlet where the air cleaners would hook up, whats the cause this?

I bought a 71 yammy 200 2-stroke today with 300 miles on a Rebuilt engine, tranny, new tires, brakes, electrical, wheels, ect. for 1100 dollars! I LOVE this bike It idles and runs great but The second I flick on the light/hit the brakes/turn on the blinkers it dies. I looked at the bike and I just ran a test the bike had 11.4 volts before start up while idling with no lights it had 11.0 with the headlight on it had 10.5 with the headligh and brake on it had 10.3 shouldnt it be around 13/14 volts with a good generator? The battery looks new so I think it has a bad generator/ regulator. How can I test the regulator and stator? Thanks -Brian

So i was looking at my air filters (r and l) and the previous owner ghetto rigged a new filter with new material and hot glue... So i was thinking is there any one that has seen some sort of mod i can do so i dont have to go buy the stock air filters (which are impossible to find, or realllly expensive) I was thinking of using pot filters and just strapping them to the carbs, but i have that whole battery separating the two air filter gaps. any one got any ideas?

This may be a silly question but i have been looking all over the place and I cannot find a 77 xs500 specific rebuild kit for the carbs. I believe I have the 38mm mikunis in it. I have also seen that there are oversized jet rebuild kits that i think fit the 38's is this a good idea? I am planning on putting a higher flow exhaust and air filters on the bike which I have heard you need to make the higher flow jets work properly.

Will the stock Mikuni VM34 carbs be alright for my xs500. I need new carbs and these are what i have found. I have mikuni's on my bike now and i am pretty sure they are 34mm.

  10. I do not think there is any vacuum being created on the left side because with all the lines hooked up and with the bike running fuel will not flow on the left side. I can see both side because there is a clear filter on each side. If i take the line off on the petcock side of the filter fuel will run out of the tank no problem. But when the bike is on and running with everything hooked up there is no fuel flowing on that side. The other side is perfect. Is this an issue with the carb not producing vacuum? Or something weird with the petcock? Or possibly a problem with another part?

  13. Hello. I just changed the handlebars on my 78 XS750 from the origional chrome ones to a pair of black painted ones, and it wont electric start. The following have all been checked and DO WORK> lights, kick start, kill switch, and blinkers. I also shaved off all the paint under the throttle grip incase it was a 'bad ground' problem. Any suggestions?

Hi all my names Mike from Canada and am now the very proud owner of of a 1981 XS400S. I have plans for the bike involving a cafe style setup. I have a problem with parts up where I live and am needing to know how interchangeable are the XS650 parts to the 400's. The parts needed are; -Master cylinder (whole thing is buggered) -Front Caliper and Rotor -Engine parts (What I am asking here is if the 650 is just a bored and stroked 400?) -Starter Thanks all, I'll post some pics up when I get the machine in the works. P.S. - What are some good online sites you guys buy from for parts, I found mikesxs, partsNmore and ol Bike bandit. Nice to meet you all and thank…

Hi people! how are you. I am changing the oil from the front fork of a yamaha fzr 90' (3he). I changed the oil for the mililiters that told me my mechanic but I think that the fork is even too weak. Do you know the exact mililiters that have to be in the front forks of that bike? thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english, see you soon! Jordi

  19. my xs500 wont charge the battery. The PO checked the stator and regulator/rectifier before he sold it and they checked out fine. So he said it was something in the wires. I have checked the wires and everything is connected and where it should be except on solid yellow wire going from the front of the bike and ends just before the starter solenoid. It doesnt reach the solenoid though, its a few inches too short. the only wire i found that had the insulation kind of torn was the rear left turn signals. Those are now fixed and no more wire is showing. could it be that those where hitting the fender or something and shorting making the battery drain? I dont have a volt meter…
