For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by davomoto,

Hi, new member here. I have been restoring old Hondas for 15 years. I am very active on the honda305.com forum, and have many 60s Hondas. I live in Nor Cal. I was recently given a 69 DT1 250. I got it running on starting fluid yesterday, and today I'm working on getting her running on petrol. I am in the process of rebuilding the carb with the keyster kit that came with the bike. I have a couple questions for the more knowledgable folks on the site. On the 305s, I avoid using most of the brass in the keyster kits, as I find the tolerances are not always as exact as the OEM parts. Is this true for the Yamaha kits as well? In the kit is a new needle jet, is this part replac…

-I recently acquired a 74 dt360 that had no spark. Was running well till it just died and wouldn't start. Found a used CDI for it and it then had spark. I pulled the flywheel and cleaned everything up under there and then had a better spark. Cleaned up the mess of a wiring harness, made sure the cdi was grounded well and taped everything up to look pretty. -Ran a bunch of compression tests which showed between 115psi-125psi. Usually around 119-120psi. -Carb is clean and float valve seating well, airbox open. -Cant see any gaps between the reeds and the cage, got a new cage and reeds on the way however. -Using new spark plugs, I get the best spark with a NGK B8E…

  8. Started by armpit,

I bought a 72 RT1 360 with 4800 miles for $120 from a guy that rode it all the time, then 8 years ago, drained the tank and parked it in the shed. It has no key, so he said (from what I could understand) that he was able to get it running by cutting the entire cluster of wires that went to the switch, then just stalling it out to turn it off. I got the carb cleaned, and I am getting fuel and oil into the engine, its got great compression, but I cant get any spark. Wiring diagram: http://www.slimduck.com/rt1360_wiring.htm I tried connecting the red to brown, but still no spark. Any ideas? That dang spark is all that's keeping me from having this baby ru…

I'm going to hack my wifes XS400 this winter, and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the top tubes under the seat are. I know they're 7/8" tubing, but does anyone know what the wall thickness is? I could just order .120 wall tubing, and it should work, but there's a couple spots that I'm going to have slugs in, and would rather use the same tubing as the stock frame. Thanks In Advance.

  10. So I picked up a 1978 xs500 on the super cheap, ready to get my hands dirty. After getting the engine off the frame, I am up to my eyes in it and think it would be best to just replace the engine (the top end is stuck and is looking to be pretty costly to get moving again). I've found an xs 500 parts bike for sale in the area, but its a 1975- and I'm not sure if they will match up. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!!!

My 1979 XS750F runs perfectly with the recommened K&N Filters. Only when I pull out the plugs they are white/grey (must be running lean right?). I haven't yet increased the jetting in the carbs. The 79 XS750F comes with Mikuni Carbs which are factory set to 130 on the main jets. How much of an increase would you recommend. If you are a stickler for accuracy, I live in Toronto, Canada where the average height above sea level is 500ft and the temerature during riding season varries from 10 to 35 degrees celcius. Thanks, Mark

Does anyone know any good frame mounted fairing for a 79 xs750. I have a vetter package but find it too heavy. I'm looking for a fairing that doesn't turn with the steering.

looking to get a nice new halogen bulb for my weak stock headlight so night riding won't be so scary. I read on a couple other threads that some1 was successful in shoving a 7" replacment everything into the 6" stock housing.. mighty tempting to get a nice 7" led setup and shoving it in. Other then that the stock lamp seems like its all one piece with the bulb sealed inside.. can that seal be broken and the bulb easily swapped out or is the fixture toast if you break the seal. whats everyone else running these days?

  15. Started by IndigoSlowx,

I just recently joined this forum, and I have a 1979 XS 750 Special that I am rebuilding. The bike did not run when I bought it but it only has 2k miles on it and is locked in second gear. My dad and I have taken it apart and aside from a broken bolt in the bottom of the transmission it looks brand new. I was just wondering where I could find some parts and info on these bikes, they seem few and far between and I really have no idea what I am doing with it. I will try to post some pictures of it later.

  16. Ok, i know this is normally a simple fix with a screw extractor. but what about when you cant get to it with a screw extractor. i'm currently taking my carbs apart from my 81 XS400 and so far about 95% of the screws it it i've had to drill out and use a screw extractor to get out because their all stripped out. I finally get to my carb slide to replace the slide needle with one that has adjustable grove things. but then as i try to take the top part thats hold the top down...they won't come out, i don't wanna just start poking down there with a drill cause i don't want to mess the diaphragm up and put me back 100 bucks ( 50 for each). I've looked at the hayn…

Hey Guys, I need to buy some gaskets after discovering an oil leak but I'm unsure which exact model I have. All I know is that it's an 81 XS250. I don't believe it's a C model as I think that had drums on the front and rear. Where as mine has drum on the rear and disc at the front. So was wondering if anyone had a list or knew what the differences were. thanks Ben

hello, As I ordered new spark plugs for my 81 xs400 i used what was listed in the Haynes manual, BP7ES spark plug, and used Z1's spark plug guide to find the right spark plug cap to use, used this to get 2 LBO5F caps. here lies the problems...when i got these in, the spark plug caps wouldn't fit on the spark plug ends, then when i went to look at the bike i realized the spark plugs on the bike are BR7ES. So i was wondering if the Haynes manual is incorrect (since from what I've read through on other forums is that it sometimes is incorrect) and i should use BR7ES spark plugs instead of BP7ES. also, doesn't anyone know how to match spark plugs to spark plug caps so they…

I just wired a set of LED tail lights to my 78 XS400E. Just removed the old tail light and spliced in the wires for the tail where there used to be 3 wires meeting. Not a problem with the key on and the engine off. Works as a running light, lights up bright with the brakes applied. And then I go to start the bike. Starter clicks, the bike dies completely. I go to unscrew the negative terminal on the battery and the moment the screwdriver hits it, there's power again. Any ideas...?

Hello all, Just needing a bit of help, I am making a super simple custom loom for my XS250 and I was just trying to work out what the wires coming out of the stator do. There are 4 coming off of the outer coils and 2 coming off of the inner. Would anyone mind explaining what all of these do? Regards, Joel
