i've only had this bike for about 2 months, so i still don't know alot about it. seems when i drive uphill the oil light comes on. this could just be a poorly placed sensor. [same thing happened on a chevy truck i had, fuel gauge read empty eveytime i drove downhill] i recently changed the oil and filter; the oil level is good, and there are no leaks. something i have to live with? or sign of a problem.

Hi YOC, 1st post in the community. Name's Jack and I live in Brooklyn and through a stroke of luck I just picked up a 1981 XS400 Special II for a steal. I'm fairly new to bikes (my other bike's a Buell Blast, it's my 2nd "first bike"... long story) and this is going to be my first real project. She's definitely not in the best shape, but she's definitely got life left in her. Currently she's not running but that's half the fun isn't it. Here's a crappy cell phone pic from the dark garage: I'm looking to do either a street tracker or cafe build as I feel the bike's not in good enough shape to warrant restoring to original condition. Currently the list of …

I've narrowed the problem down a bit: The bike runs great when the air boot between the carburetor and filter box is disconnected, but runs like crap past 3,000rpm when the boot is connected- with or without the foam air filter inside. It starts cutting out, smoking, and will not accelerate- and will stall at WOT. I'm not really sure what the deal is. I've soaked the carb in carb cleaner, blasted out all the fuel circuits and air passages with compressed air, adjusted the mixture screw, the floats, timing, etc. It is something to do with the air filter box. Anyone have any ideas why it is behaving like this? I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out what …

Does anyone know if the At series (125cc) and the CT series(175) have the same bore sizes? I often see pistons advertised for both models.

I just picked up a near basket case XS400RK - 1983. I would like to get as much info on this bike to prepare me for the restoraton and conversion to a cafe/streetfighter look. Please share what you know or have done to this model. A couple of questions; 1. Is there another Yamaha that used the same fuel tank? Mine's got a rust hole and it might be better to replace than weld a patch 2. I need a tray for the battery and did not see one on the parts diagrams - anyone know what to use? 3. Is there another model that uses a wider rear wheel that will be a direct swap? Mines 2.15" I like at least a 3.0" My plans are to install a dual Dominator headlight, bar en…

Hello All. Hope all are well. Does anyone know the size of the spacer used on the RSX100 bike. I had to fit rsx forks as no RS forks available. Difference is the spacer is clamped at the end of the RS forks and the RSX sits between the fork and the wheel hub. If I could find the original spacer I could work it out or cut it down to size or make one up. Regards CRaig and Rachel

My wife's Grandfather just gave me an old 1965 yamaha yg1 he picked up years ago as a project. He's lamented the fact that he never got around to restoring it and just started a really nasty battle with colon cancer. I've been working hard to get it up and running so that he can see his project finished should he take a turn for the worst. Here is a list of Parts I am looking for. Front Fender Turn Signals left side cover, knob, and ignition switch Rear Shocks taillight front controls and Levers Thanks for looking, and if you can help out it would be greatly appreciated. And Obviously I will pay fair prices for parts. Andrew [email protected] Lehi Uta…

I have an 81 XS400 Heritage that I hardtailed and bobbed. I am wondering if there is another alternative to the stock 33mm forks and wheel on my XS400. I want to put a spoked front wheel with drum brake on the bike instead of the heritage special mag wheel and rotor. Either want to find a wheel assembly that will work with the current forks, or better yet, a fork and wheel assembly that will fit in the triple tree clamps. I don't need the speedo. I can get a new axle machined with spacers if it is close to the proper width. Any ideas? For instance, I know that the old CB350 and others had 33mm forks.

LED tail light update: I posted this info in the headlight upgrade thread where this was discussed but thought it was important enough to start a new thread: Just received the pair of super bright LED #1157 tail/stop bulbs I ordered from Ebay. I have used the seller in the past with good results. Installed the bulbs and they are practically as bright as the filament type - only a very slight difference. Far better that the other, flatter style you usually find in auto parts stores. I am totally satisfied with the results. They are a little pricey but they are high quality. Power test: with engine running and headlight on high beam (60w), no headlight dimming when the…

Hey Guys, I had my xs400 apart this morning as I was checking the valves; I wanted to check the condition of the points as I have never done this before, but was unable to remove the cover...I was able to remove the screw on the bottom left of the cover, but it seemed like there was something holding it on the right side even though there is no visible screw...it looks like just a big metal plug and I could not figure out how to remove it. Also, while I had the spark plugs out I figured I would snap a couple pictures of them...seems to me that there is a bit of carbon fouling on them...is this indicative of an overly rich mixture? After I had the carburetors apart…

Hey guys, I'm new here. I bought an 81 XS400 Special off of craigslist a few weeks ago and been having a ball with it so far. Unfortunatly I'm rather short (5'3) and cannot flatfoot the bike. I wanted to know if anyone could give me ideas for lowering the bike anywhere from 1 inch to 2 and 1/2 inches? The shocks are already set at the lowest setting (the stock ones I believe) Also, I've noticed some issues I've had, and I'm just learning about mechanics so I don't know fully how to address them on my own without just taking it to a shop. But I really want to learn as I plan to keep this bike for quite a while. Here's what I've noticed... : If I get under 1/3 of …

I am struggling to find new needle jets for my 77 XS400. Yamaha part number 2A2-14941-04-00. PO really messed them up. I tried Mikesxs thinking that Mikuni parts were interchangeable but they are not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Right now this is the only thing keeping me from rebuilding the carbs. Jay
