Hello to all. I have returned to the two wheel world after a 5 year absents. In 2005 I was involved in what should have been a fatal hit and run. By the grace of god, I came out pretty good. I was on my 50th motorcycle, a 2003 heritage soft-tail classic. Well a few weeks back I started itching, so to scratch it, I returned to my high school years, I am 52 now. I picked up a truly cherry 74 Rd 350 and a very nice 77 XS 400. Well while talking to a local around here about old bikes he related this story to me."In about 1983 I went down to this road between X and Z to buy a starter for a Honda 350. The guy had a bunch of bikes, but told me I had to buy them all, no singl…

I need a little help with the clutch on my '81 xs250. My clutch was slipping and no amount of adjusting would fix it so I ordered new EBC friction plates and clutch cable. When I removed the existing clutch I discovered that it only had 5 friction plates and 4 plain plates. According to the Haynes manual there should be 7 friction and 6 plain plates. Should I just replace the 5 friction plates or get another 2 plain plates so I have the full pack as per the manual? All feed back is really appreciated as this is my first bike and I want to get it back on the road ASAP.

Hi all New to this site and new to the restoration lark. Ive just bought myself an XT 250 which for years has been used as a feild bike. my first thing to do was send off for the V5, all I had though was the frame number 3Y301..... is this enough? I havent a clue about what the reg ever was but I was hoping DVLA would tell me this. dont know if i should have had the full VIN but I dont have it!! Second thing was taking it appart. Very easy I must say. But... revealed lots of horrors on the way. Wheels are battered but I`m sure can be made good, repaint hubs, new bearings, spokes pads etc. air box is a gonner, but thats no problem as I`m going with the K&N l…

Hello, I am new to the Forum so here goes nothing.. I have been working on restoring a 1975 Yamaha TX 500 for quite sometime now. I had it fully operational until i noticed I had a leaky head gasket. So, with much contimplation I purchased all new head gaskets and pulled the Motor and opened her up. With buckets of degreaser and a Clymer manual i went to work. I pulled the head off and the cylinder block replaced the gaskets and through it all together. Now, I read in my clymer manual that to install the cam chain you need to set the governor plate to "V" and match the punch marks on the cams to the mark on the head. This seemed very suspicious to me because i thou…

I purchased a pair of Mikuni VM34 carbs for my 1975 XS500B. The new carbs do not fit into the stock intake gaskets. Would something like this work My link or do I need to do something custom? Thanks, Jason

Hey all, It's been a while since I was on here, but I've still been wrenching on the bike! Finally have her in a state I'm happy calling finished, and just wanted to share some updated pics. Since I was last on here, she's gotten new rearsets (Tarozzis), new mini speedo/tach, a larger-piston master cylinder for the dual discs, and a new 2-2 exhaust. One of the pipes on the old exhaust cracked through during a ride, so I started from scratch, picked up some ss tubing, and bent/welded it together. Oh, and I did end up rejetting the carbs for the pod filters and exhaust. I went with 145 main jets and it's running perfect. old exhaust: new exhaust:

Just bought a 1980 XS400, and it runs...sometimes. It cranked today relatively easily with the choke all the way out. I let it warm up for a few minutes, then pushed in the choke. It seemed to be idling around 1400. I ran it around the block for about 30 minutes and it was fine. Went home and turned it off. About 20 minutes later I started it up again, but it was having a hard time idling. RPMs dropped several times before it just died. I kick-started it , and revved the throttle. When it dropped to idle, it would die again. Sometimes when it was trying to die, I revved the throttle, but that just made it die quicker. I adjusted the idle stop screw between th…

My XS 400 runs well and has a good rev range, so that is good I have found that if i use the side-stand that one of the carbs (Right) will drain a little making starting harder until it`s filled again when I put the bike upright. That`s not a problem as I can use the center stand! But no matter what I do to my bike, my idle is ALWAYS lumpy. I have had them balanced , sonicly cleaned, new jets, diaphrams, ect, ect! while looking at the mounts, I am thinking that the small brass tubes that are blocked off on mine should maybe be linked?? by a small length of rubber tube?? Any advise is greatfully recieved........ thyank you

So I need a new set of taillights, and considering integrating the taillight to the seat assembly. I'm a fan of LEDs, but how will the electrical system play with such type of lighting? For reference, I ride a XS400D And also an aftermarket tach, since the one I have is probably not so accurate (very sticky)

got permission to post this xs400 bobber on here from "the chopper underground" cracking bike and used spray paint in the tank and "fenders" what the owner said... Headlight is a Unity Spotlight with a sportster bulb -21" front wheel from a yz125(i think) -Pipes are stock but have had extentions welded on to delete the mufflers -rear fender is a late 30s ford spare ring. Struts made out of flat stock from Menards with bends to conform to the fender and bottom mounts. -Model A light -Split HD tank that had but insides cut, trimmed and welded back together -Duplicolor rattlecan tins and frame. Spraymaxx clear for the tank for…

Hi all, help needed again, I am planning for the rebuild of the engine(78 xs), and wont to get every thing ready before I start. I love using a locking adhesive on nuts and bolts. So the question is; what do you use , if anything at all, on con rods, and any other engine nuts/bolts,(crank case).

I've tried searching but usually its someone who can't kick but can roll, and the electric is never mentioned. Just taking a wild guess, but is it the starter gears that need to be looked at? And which side is it on? Just to be clear: YES Electric Start NO Kick start NO Bump Start

I just picked up a working 77 XS400 and took it for a hell of a ride. Unfortunately, it got pretty hot and i think it warped/shook some screws off. I believe it is the stator cover, its right above the gear shifter. I noticed oil spilling onto the exhaust pipe and steaming, and my foot was also covered in oil. I let it cool down a bit, and now I'm back home, but I don't think i have enough battery for an electric start and the kickstart seems to be not working as well as it did this morning. The oil completely drained, so I put new oil in, and it ran for another hour or so, and then after it started, it would not idle, even with the choke pulled all the way out. Any …

Alright I hate to beat a dead horse....and by dead....I mean nothing left but bones since all the flesh is LONG gone. It's just that I've spent HOURS reading through these forums about carb issues/information and can't seem to nail down what I need to know. The bike. 1977 XS400D. The carbs. Mikuni BS32 I think. The issue. Cold bike, pull the slide choke or enricher or whatever all the way out. Start bike. Revs spike and then slide the choke in half way and revs go down and then spike again. Choke is all the way in now and revs seem to be okay around 1500. Take the bike on the road and hit a stop light. Revs hold steady at 3000+. The only way I can get them down i…

Pretty cool if I say so myself. Hopefully the welds hold up. People on a welding site I posted on think it'll break. Pedal is off my mountain bike, finish is gun blue, no paint, no clear.
