For the Vintage Yamahas

Hi folks, I need to top up the oil. My bike manual says my 1986 XJ900F needs 20W/40 oil. It's really hard to get that exact spec. Would 10W/40 be ok? Also should it be semi synthetic? Cheers

After 8 months of hard work i have finished one of my favourite bikes which is a late 1975 xt500C Hope you like the pics. The hardest thing to get hold of was the rear silencer which in the end i was forced to make one myself. TTB

Hi there I have been working on my SR for a while now, its now finally getting to the MOT stage. the previous owner put a larger back wheel on, I have the original wheel which I wanted to put back on the bike as the larger wheel looks silly. But while unbolting the back sprocket one of the 4 bolts holding it in place sheered off!, this is probally a daft question but im new and in experienced with these matters but I was wondering if those 4 bolts are changable? the ones that hold the sprocket.

I have started from the back, tail light, fuse box ect. graham just put new clutch plates in, and re-zinc plated the kick shaft. I've spent about grand on the motor alone.

  8. hello there! i am fitting two xj600 1990 wheels (different colour..black as opposed to all silver) onto my 1989 xj600. the rear wheels goes in but when i tighten the axle with just a little torque, it stops spinning freely, ie sticks and i can hardly push it. is there something i might be missing? eg are the wheels compatible size wise. in all other respects they seems identical, although the chain/alignment adjusters took some squeezing in.. if i don't tighten the axle nut it spins ok. am thinking spacer maybe, there is one on the left side, the right side hooks into the rear brake armature. any pointers very welcome as am loath to roide it with the nut basically…

I just became the owner of a really nice 76 DT 175C. I bought it from the second owner, who bought it last year from the original owner's servicing dealer. She has never been restored and is in really good shape for her age. The gas tank is in near perfect condition. However, it does not quite fit the bike. The front mounting ears have what appear to be the correct rubber bumpers and they fit perfectly into the mounting horseshoes on the frame. However, the rear anchor hole does not line up with the rear frame mounted anchor stud. The rear of the tank also does not set correctly on the frame. The tank has the correct Blue with 175 stripe diaganal down both sides of …

I've combed the forum for topics that address the issue and made some progress, but I'm at my wits end. I have replaced the intake boots / gasket. I have pulled main jets, pilot jets, pilot screw, starter jet (Air inlet) and soaked in carb cleaner. I have replaced the rubber o ring, metal oring, and spring on the pilot screw. I upped the pilot jets to 47.5 from the 42.5 (I was going to go to 45 but I seemed to have lost one....). Main jets are still stock (135 I think). Now, the issue. About 2 years ago the bike started doing the "Stick at 4k RPM" issue. I let it sit for awhile and finally started looking at it again. What is it doing now? After ti…

  12. I thought I would start a new thread on the most stupid prices you have found for parts for your classic. Those interested in the classic bike scene know that every now and again a bargain can be found but you can guarantee that there will always be stupid priced items around. Here are 4 linky items to start the thread off 250 piston - $249.99 250 headlamp - $225 sprocket cover - $200 Knackered bolts - $36.99 - Have a look at all the pictures on this one ha ha. I know that these will eventually not be available to be viewed but thought that it may give the restorers amongst us a laugh and opportunity to post what you have found.

Hey folks, I'm new here but have been riding and playing with Harleys for over 45 years. I need some advise on an issue. Buddy of mine just purchased a 1981 XS 850 Triple. It's in rough condition (lots of fuel leaks) so he asked me to get it in shape over the winter. Got fluids changed, new fuel lines, petcock o-rings, battery, etc. Pretty straight forward stuff. Bike now runs and, so far, no more leaks. Will get new tires and other 'fixes" later on. This machine came new with the Vetter Windjammer fairing and saddlebag setup. Nice combo. For some reason the headlite is not working. Per the old Haynes manual which I have, it shows the headlite shell has a screw…

Can someone help me identify this bike ? Looks like early 80's model. My guess is that it's a 2 stroke YZ80, maybe around 1980 or so. It has a 10 digit vin. Any help would be appreciated. I want to buy parts for it. It runs awesome, just looks ugly ! The VIN and Engine numbers both start with 3R1...

Hello everyone and happy new year! I'm a newcomer in this site, and I'm pretty afraid I would immediately disgust most of you with my project (I already almost did it with oldgitonabike as soon as I introduced myself...), but I will try all the same. Here in Italy there is a pretty amousing Vintage Enduro Championship, with many classes and riders, last year I won my class riding a 1982 Kram It 250, but I really felt unappropriated with this bike, way too modern compared to the others in the other classes (up to 1973 2 and 4 strokes, up to 1977, up to 1981 and "new ones", all spared in subclasses for the engine size). I would like to race with a really vintage …

Hello from the Netherlands. I thought, let's go international today I recently finished (euh finished?? caferacers are never finished) my 1977 Xs400 caferacer. I started with just a frame and rebuild the bike till what you see on my "garage pictures". If you are interested in the rebuilding foto's, just go to this Dutch website for the report: http://www.motor-forum.nl/forum/list_messages/242933/0/0/hornix The frame and swingarm are powdercoated. It has a double disc conversion in front with steel braided lines and a yamaha R6 master brake cylinder. K&N like pods with adjusted jetting. Larger BMW Boge shocks. Clipons and Raask rearsets. And a cafeseat. The bi…

Hey Guys, Im new to this forum. I posted an intro in the newby section. Just picked up an 82 maxim 400 in pretty decent shape. Needs a few things but otherwise im a pretty happy guy. The bike came without side covers and a cover for the air filter. The filter is exposed and i was wondering if its critical to have that covered to operate? Im having alot of troubles finding any parts for this bike. Thanks for any help Steve

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I have joined as I have recently got a 1981 XS500. I have already managed to source numerous parts from ebay, however I'm having problems finding a new oil filter cartridge, either the original large size one, or the later update which I believe was an adapter seal, allowing a smaller cartridge to be fitted. Does anyone know where I maybe able to source this in the UK? Thanks Jime
