For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by Skunkyd,

Help needed please, I've recently purchased an RD350 (as above), on a recent ride out the oil late flashed and then stayed on solid obviously telling me I needed to top up the oil tank. I stopped for a cuppa, leaving the bike on the sidestand, when returning to the bike still leaving it on the sidestand the engine would not fire up when kicked (oil light was on), however, when I then uprighted the bike and put the sidestand up (oil light went out) the bike then kicked immediately. Although I cannot find a sidestand switch as you'd have on a modern bike, if the oil light is on when the engine is switched off does this actually prevent you from starting the bik…

Hi all. I have a euro spec dt125 that was reg'd Feb 74 in cheshire. I think it's a 73 though as it has the earlier style curved exhaust. I have been looking for ages for a replacement seat, or even just the seat pan. The one on the bike had disintegrated to the point that I only have the back part (plus foam and cover of course). I bought a couple of single seats from the USA from at3 and ct3, in an attempt to just to get the bike rideable, but the hinge and lock points are in different places. If it helps, the rear part of my pan has a single indent in the centre to clear the rear light loom. Most of those I have seen aren't like this. If anyone can help me wit…

  3. Went for a test ride after tightening a few bits up, seemed ok, but I haven't got used to the backwards gears yet. Over revved the bike and heard a pop. Lost dipped beam. Switched to high beam to ride home, but shortly after lost this too. Then the back light died. Can I assume these basic bikes don't have a regulator on the lighting circuit? And why did the lights not all die at once?! Quite keen to get this fixed for Xmas as it's a present... But work is pretty mental ATM. Any help much appreciated. Ta in advance!!

Hi all first time on forum, I need a bit of help acquiring parts to renovate a c reg DT125LC apparently it is an 1983 model. Parts needed heat sheild for front silencer, and original rear silencer with sheild ( been on Internet for days no joy) also the front of the bike is missing all brackets to hold headlight on,and the manual I have is pooh! So it doesn't show how it all goes together, so advice or close up photo would be greatly appreciated

  6. Hello friends-- I'm trying to understand my newest bike the 1968 YR1.. whilst doing this, I've been thinking CDI ignitions to replace the stock system. as the YR1 grand prix is referenced as "the grand dad to the RD350" I'm wondering how much changed in 5 years. does anyone know the engine number/ designation? i also read from the R5 wiki: "The engine cases are similar enough that with modifications, they can be interchanged" Im wondering if this applies to the YR1? without seeing an RD350 I've established they have a different port map, as well as reed valve intake. but are the cases different? is the crank different? I've seen this ignition which seem…

  7. Trying to get insurance for the above, but most companies don't either A. Go back to 1980 or B. list the MX version....lol....been quoted £155 for a classic policy which is taking the pi$$ Swintons were quoting £63 fully comp etc for the DT175 but when I rang them about the MX bit they went all shy and said they could not quote as it wasn't listed ?..... Do I just say it's a DT175 which they say goes from 1978-1985 which covers my bike anyway ?...

Found a '68 YL-1 that seems to be in good shape and is complete. I'm trying to find what the value is, as well as whether or not parts are available. Seems its been sitting for some time, so I'm thinking carbs will need to be rebuilt/cleaned, etc. Are there other things I should be aware of with this particular bike? Links specific to it or other similar classics? How can I find out what to offer the guy (its at a garage sale)? All I can seem to find with searches are pictures (which are helpful but not enough). Any help or pointers would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks, Lon

seems like the EU are banning it Chrome plating as we know it will disappear forever if new European Union regulations come into operation, classic experts have warned. The problem centres around the use of hexavalent chromium which is on the list of substances banned under EU regulation 1907/2006. It is acknowledged by the EU as a carcinogen, and chronic exposure has been linked with lung cancer – affecting those who work in the plating industry. However, chrome plating experts have spoken to CCFS about their concerns over switching to the proposed substitute trivalent chromium. The problem with this substitute is that the peculiar blue brightness associated…

Hello friends- i have a technical question. I have slowly been getting ready for a fire up of my YR1(twin cylinder 350cc) and i have approached the throttle section- obviously there are two throttles for two carbs but i noticed a third cable connected to the clutch side of the crank case. for your viewing pleasure, its #30 on the attached schematic its labeled as, "WIRE PUMP" can someone please explain this to me? is it for the oil delivery system? if so, i have that system deleted and plan to premix. if its for some reason transmission fluid- can you please advise? slightly confused- just curious. Thank you!

  16. Hey classics fans. I'm hoping to get my DT175E restarted and out for a break in ride today and I'm not quite sure on a few things. Here's where I'm currently at: -All new electrics back on the bike and a quick check shows that when I turn the key, my tail light light and rear turn signals work along with the flasher light on the tach, and horn just makes a click when I press the button. I'm guessing that I need to create a better ground for the front flashers as I only grounded them to the handlebars and not the frame like I did on the rear, and the horn is probably dead from rust. -New piston and rings in a freshly honed cylinder. I put a new cylinder base gasket…

Me again. Just started the175 rebuild, well I say rebuild , more like a quick clean up and get her running. This is not going to be a origonal restoration. The plan is to use this in the classic enduro class of the SEEC rounds. C2 class, C1 is aircooled, twin shock , drum brake. C2 is any two of that three. Going to be a bit of a shock after my normal ride of a 12 300 xc KTM. Swing arm, chain tensioner and connected stuff is out , swing arm sandblasted and awaiting etch primer. Picked the bike up last week, it's done about 23,000miles and shows it. Although it was looked after to some degree. The few remaining cross head screws are not chewed out, the tabs on the r…

This is driving me bonkers have searched for 2 days trying to find the right ones, which I might say is very hard almost impossible..WHY doesn't Yamaha or another company make these?? Does any one know if you can get them. Talked to a few places and search on here for websites. Would like to have factory fit, if possible. At the top below the tre the white bushing has a groove where the top connects I measured 48-49mm and the bottom on the fork itself there is another groove that measured 41mm. All the aftermarket ones seems to be close but once again have to zip tie or clamp. If someone could give me some insight would appreciate it. Thanks

But the tranny only seems to shift 1st N 2nd now that it's back together.. Does the shift shaft need to be aligned in a certain spot or the star peace on the end of the shift drum need to be set in a right spot with..?
