  2. Hi everyone, I'm new to this site, and the street bike world. I was hoping to get a little help for a couple problems I'm having. This April, I bought an old 81 400 that somebody stopped caring for about 8 years ago. I've taken the time to go over almost everything, with the exceptiption of tearing down the motor. I have it running, and shifting, tuned up, carbs cleaned etc. But one of my problems seems to be the motor speed when pulling in the clutch to shift through the gears. When the bike is in neutral, the throttle seems to snap right back along with the rpms. When riding though, the rpm's seem to not want to drop right as I'm going through the gears. Anyone kn…

I did some searching on here and didn't see any threads where we all shared the places we have found good parts for our classics! Obviously e-bay, but I am wondering about other places you have that aren't stupid expensive. I currently need to replace my mirrors & levers, as I put drag style bars on it and now the stock fitments don't hold the mirrors out far enough to be real effective lol. The problem is, the levers and mirrors both attach to the same fitment...so I need to replace both. Has anyone found websites that cater to hard to find parts? Online junkyard type places would be cool too, but I haven't found any like there are for cars...

Here's the background~ 1981 xs 400 SH, 17k original miles I've used two old Mikuni carbs for their parts to make one good set. I also bought and installed kits in both sides, and otherwise have not made any internal adjustments so far. The problem~ She fires right up, and idles perfectly at 1200 rpms without using the choke. The speed limit on my highway is 60mph, which is pretty fast for this bike. The tach shows just over 5k rpms at that speed in 6th gear. After only a few miles at that speed, the rpms won't come back down when I let off the throttle. I've checked the throttle cable and it's sitting right where it should be. I'm going out right now to take…

Deaos anyone know how I can use my engine / frame number to get a full history of the bike? I have recently purchased a 1973 rd350 (V5) however quite a few of the bits seem to be off of a later B model, so I want to be sure that the engine / frame numbers (which are the same) c0rrespond to the year that it says on the V5. The number is 351-505413. Cheers Mark

I just went to my local thief cycle center, and they want $36 a piece for the air filters. Is there a good on-line place for ordering them? Has anyone ever used pod filters, or are they a joke?

According to the wiring diagram I can find for the XS400, it has no clutch switch. Meaning that you need to be in neutral to start the bike. That's fine when you are getting going from a parking lot, but what if you stall it in an intersection - you'd have to fiddle with the thing to get it in neutral so you can hit the starter instead of just pulling the clutch and starting it. So, did the XS400 come with a clutch switch or no? I have one (not hooked up) on the XJ550 front end that's on my bike. I'm trying to decide if I should try to wire that in or if I should just bypass the neutral switch. How dangerous would that be? (bypassing the neutral switch)

question for the masses... Is it possible that the measuring lines on the oil dipstick for my bike to be incorrect? Prior to changing the oil, the level on the dipstick was about right at the bottom line, which I assumed was a quart low. After changing the oil and filter, it was half way between the top and bottom lines (1/2 qt low)..... I topped it off to the full line, and now the engine seems to be working quite a bit harder. Is it possible that I was a dipstick and just misread the other dipstick, or could it actually be inaccurate? Any suggestions as to how to remove oil from the engine without draining the whole thing again? Perhaps I could take it ou…

Does anyone have experience swapping out sprocket sizes? I want to put bigger sprokets on my 83 XS400. I have stock 16 tooth and 35 tooth sprockets now. I'm rapping 5000 rpm at 55mph. I don't neccessarily wan't to go faster. I just want to run lower rpms at 55mph on the highway. I'm thinking of just getting a 45 tooth rear sprocket from an XS550. Will this sprocket fit on my XS400 wheel, or will I need an xs550 wheel too? My stock chain has 100 links. I'm thinking I will need 104 links, since the xs550 has the 16/45 combo and 104 links. I have found the proper chain and sprocket on ebay for a good price. The listing ends in 1 day. I have also found an 83 xs…

  11. I'm having a problem locating where the turn signal relay is on my 82 xs400 Seca. I have looked through the service manual and it states that it is located near the tank, but I can't find it, need to replace it. Is it located somewhere inside the frame? Thanks for any help in advance.

I have a 1982 XS400S w/XJ550 front clip (it came to me this way). When I hit the rear brake the headlight dims and the turn signal indicator (in pod, not the turn signals themselves) lights up dimly. What does this mean? I would assume there is a short somewhere?

Hello. I bought a 1983 RD350 LC2 a few months ago and have been slowly re-building it and checking everything over. Talking to few older people i know i have been advised to fit a steering damper but i haven't been able to find any anywhere. So i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where i may be able find one. Thanks.

recently I replaced the instrument cluster on the bike and everything work out great. Then about a week later I turned the ignition on and nothing happened. turned it on and off a few times and then finally got power (to the neutral indicator and instrument cluster). Them on the next outing tried it again same thing, no power to the instrument cluster. wiggled the wires in the headlight and suddenly got it to work, but now wiggling the wires does work. any suggestions as to what to check. I recently replace the ignition switch and the battery. thanks Brian

Hi - I'm new on here and looking for some info on a 1980 XS 250. I've bought this ole' thing with intentions of restoring it back to new/original condition - it seems pretty complete, and apart from not running since 1986 doesn't seem in bad nick. I've spent a few hours looking through the net but there doesn't seem to be much info on this particular model, or XS 250's in general. Front disc, rear drum - it's not the US custom/cruiser type or the square one! niether is the model launched in 1980 which had the typical modernistic 80's styling!!! ( any of that make sense?) As far as I know it's a UK spec bike. I've read a few conflicting things about what was mad…

hello all, just bought my first bike so I will have some questions for you experts out there as I tweak the bike to perfection. I am the proud owner of a '77 xs400d with a little less than 6000 miles on it. it has sat in storage for about the past 15-20 years. it only needs a few minor things before I can put it on the road this fall. first off- can anyone recommend new air filters for this bike. i would like to put some K&N style filters on but only if they will fit under the original cover. if anyone can send me some info I would greatly appreciate it.

This is my new to me 1977 XS360. With 6,653 miles on it, its been in storage for the last 3 years. So I have a few questions to ask now. 1 Is there any precautions that I should take before starting the motor? 2 It is not locked up, and I think that by turning it with out sparkplugs in place, with a few squirts of oil down the cylinders it should pre lube it to be ready to start. 3 Anyone know of a Disk Brake upgrade to these? Any other info you know that you wish to share to a new owner? Story of the bike is pretty cool. My buddy moved and left me his ATV. I was too lazy to fix ATV so I put it up on Craigslist for sale or trade. Th…

Hello All! This is my first post on my first motorcycle: When we recently bought our 1981 Yamaha XS 400 the previous owner mentioned that he had put a newer battery in it b/c the old one seemed dead. It became appearent as I began to ride it at home that the battery seemed o be draining everyday. When we first got it the electric start butto worked like a charm. Days later the electric start would hesitate and dim the hell out of the dash lights. After awhile I would have to kick start it. ....It got to the point where if I had my foot on the brake (activating the break light) and the turn signal on-the bike would shut down completely, leaving me kick starting…
