For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by dj_elite,

I have a 1981 XS850s that I purchased about a year ago. It was repainted and customized and I was told it was originally a Midnight Special. How can I tell from the VIN# if it is indeed a midnight Special or just a special???

keeping the flat track project going I've drilled, thread locked and wired my disk onto the rear wheel. Are these tensioned enough. I did pull on them hard and seeing as I used thread lock as well thought it should pass an MOT inspection!! what do you think?

I am thinking of buying a bike, it's a 1975 yamaha dt 175. The problems is that it bogs down when the rpms are under say 3 or 4k rpms, above that it's ok for WOT. If you wrap gears around shifting, you can shift through all the gears no problem with WOT if you keep the rpms on the UP thoughout the gearbox. I was thinking the needle lvl in the carb, which would be simple, and I could get this minty dt175. I would rather not deal with air leaks though for what i might pay for it. The bike was also not idling before i got there lol. I went over and it would barely run and wouldn't idle. I guess the guy didnt know much about 2 strokes which absolutely shocked me because h…

I'm hoping that someone on here can help. I've got a complete front end (Bar headstock ) from a xs750 that I'm wanting to sell, but I have no idea as to what prices to ask for the various bits. Basically I have a set of forks, front wheel, callipers, wheel spindle, speedo drive and the spacers. so what prices should I be asking for? Thanks in advance for any help. I think I have the correct front brake lever set up as well but I'm not sure on that.

This guy made his own carberator synchronization ( carb sync ) gauge. Basically, it is a very large U tube. Looks easy and cheap to me, I might even have all the materials I need laying around. http://www.powerchutes.com/manometer.asp Check it out

Hello, I am restoring a Yamaha XS250 SE Special. When I stripped the engine I discovered 2 valves were bent and one of the valve guides was damaged. Can anyone tell me where I can purchase valve guides and valves or does anyone know for a bike that is being broken and the head might be available. Any helps would be much appreciated.. Thank you Simon.

Hi Folks ... It is my first time on here, and so I thought I should introduce myself. I ride a 750shaftie Seca ... although I haven't had it on the road for long (no money) after it has been hanging around in the garage for two years. I am looking for a club in the Cheshire/Staffordshire area to join ... so, any recommendations would be welcomed. I have ridden bikes over the past couple of years, but not my own, but that is another story. Cheers, Amanda

Does anyone know if the front rotor on an 81 xs400 is interchangeable with one from an 80? I'm in need of one that isn't warped, and it looks like there is one on ebay. Just want to make sure it will work before i buy. Thanks, Pete

Am restoring 74 Dt 125 and it has a compression release---the valve at the head with cable and little lever. Looks aftermarket to me. I have Yamaha factory manual and the Clymer manual and neither mentions this as a part or evenan accessory. I understand what compresion release is--or thought I did--and can't see why a dinky 125 two stroke would have it. It occured to me maybe for the electric start. I have the incorrect battery--very weak power, but good enough to check my so far electrical connections--it will almost turn the motor over but just one or two chugs and that's it. But with the little lever engaged it turns over great--but no spark --cus no compressio…

I was hoping someone would be able to help me. I purchased a 79 750 this past winter and have been working on it ever since. I recently ran into an issue with the headlight unit. When I took off the headlight I found that the guy had hard wired the "high" beam directly into the battery so I was not able to shift from high to low beam. After redoing a majority of the wiring I was able to battery test the headlight and it still works great. Now, my high beam indicator is connected, but the plug that goes into the headlight has a yellow and green coming off of it (I am assuming a low and high beam) that needs power. Unfortunately there are no other wires in the head li…

I just bought a 1974 DT125 Enduro with 3.00x19 front and 3.25x18 rear tires. It's in great shape but the tires (dated 1993) are dry and cracked. My first try at orderiing tires did'y come up with stock sizes so I might have to go one size up. I don't have a manual yet. Can anyone tell me the rim sizes on this bike and does anyone know where I can buy new Trials tires in this size? I want to keep the bike stock an ride it. Thanks

So it warmed up enough today for me to try to start the toys. Got a can of starter fluid, charged the battery and tried to start the Maxim. It was cranking and firing off starter fluid but just wouldn't get to idle on its own. After a few tries it just quit responding to the "start" button. It wasn't a gradual quit, just stopped at once. I push it and the headlight dims but it doesn't attempt to turn the motor. No sound. I also noticed that when I flip the kill switch I don't hear the little "click" right now that I usually hear. I'm guessing I fried something but don't know much about motorcycle ignitions or wiring. I checked the fuse box and there are 4 fuses in there, …

Hello- I just started work on a 1975 xs650. It's been sitting for god knows how long and I am in the process of replacing the fork seals. Got my new seals today and went to install them (tap them in with a large socket) and oops! cracked the lip where the seal sits. Can't figure out how this happened. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't put any lube on the seal before I tried to install it. The seal was not cockeyed and I wasn't reefing on it. Once I find a replacement lower fork leg I want to avoid repeating this blunder, anyone have any hints/suggestions for installing fork seals without destroying the fork. thanks
