Hi all, I recently purchased an 81 xs400 special, runs pretty good, but I wanna see what I can do to it. I've been looking around but there isn't very many resource websites for the xs400. Does anyone know of any good websites for parts, original or aftermarket? Also any websites that have a lot of pictures which can help me decide how I want my bike to look? Im new to the forum and I'm glad you guys are here.

Looking for the thread about replacing the stock oil filter with a removable can filter that is worked into one of the side cases. Saw it on here a week or so ago in one of my searches but can't seem to find it again. Thanks

Hey all, well as the title states I just picked up a 77 xs 400. I'm really digging the styling of this little machine. Here is a bad cell phone picture of the bike, I was surprised when I saw she had discs front and rear. the best part is I only paid $200 for it. Currently, I'm struggling to get it running. I've had it going a few times but it seemed to be lacking fuel and one cylinder was having trouble firing. So I pulled the carbs and noticed that one of the screw like pins was overtightened and the needle tip had broken off, jamming the hole shut. So now I'm looking for another set of carbs and I'll strip them all down and try to assemble a best p…

Hello, I seem to have a problem with my charging system. At idle, 2000 RPM and everywhere in between, my bike just isn't charging the battery. So, I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies... I've got the Haynes manual (terribly inadequate), the XS360_400 manual from the Service Manual link (not terribly explicit), and the 82 XS400 Seca manual (great, but not terribly applicable). From crossing these references against each other, I've come up with the following for an 1981 XS400H: Any bike, with the engine running at around 2000-3000RPM, you should have about 14.5V across the battery. I do not, too low and drops as the battery discharges... …

OK, I've ridden the bike a couple hundred miles now, and have got several problems I need tips with. -Really hard starting when cold. Even if it sits for only a couple hours, I've gotta crank on it a while. Kick starting is sometimes a bit easier, but not after the first couple kicks fail to keep it going. Then I just gotta spin the starter and choke it for a really long time. I think its because the left cylinder doesn't want to get going, and exhaust pipe stays ice cold for quite a while, and doesn't get firing until I warm it up and ride it like 100 ft. You can really feel a POOF as it finally kicks in and gets going. When its cold there's spark and theres fue…

Alright, so I have had some issues with my wiring, but I ordered a new harness and I have everything ALMOST fixed. Just a couple small errors I was hoping someone had some suggestions on. 1) All of my signals work (Front/Back - Left/Right) , but they won't flash when signaling... could this be an error with my flasher relay? 2) All of my gauges (neutral/oil/signal) etc work when the key is turned on, but the headlight will not turn on.. Neither high beam/low beam. Now I know the head light works because I attached it to the battery and I got a high and low beam to turn on. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Hello All- Just joined the group and had a question on changing the oil on my 73 rt1 360. I finally found a dipstick/ cap at the junk yard so I can now check the oil. Should I check the oil with the bike on the kickstand or level? Should I screw the cap all the way on or not to check it? Does anyone know about how much the bike will take, the book said 40 oz, that seemed a little high. Thanks Bill

78 xs400. I possibly have a starter solenoid/relay prob. With it hooked up I push the the starter button and I get nothing, not even a click. Fuses are good and battery is charged. I have power to the solenoid/relay (blue/wht....red/wht. ) I can cross the main terminals with a screwdriver and the motor turns over. Call me stupid, but would this a defective solenoid/relay?

I couldn't find a particular place on the list for intros or if it's expected, customary, etc. I'm older, live in north central VA, and have owned two XJ 550's and an XJ 650 in the past. My wife and I currently own the several bikes you see on my list. I do wish I'd held on to at least one of the 550's. Those are fun bikes! I just acquired an inexpensive '82 XJ 400 this weekend to have around as a UJM garage bike for the several friends of ours who want to learn to ride. I'm planning a lowering project which I assume will involve a shorter shock and dropping the triple clamps a bit. I've done this several times in the past on other bike models for my shorter wife…

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas if any other exhausts would fit a 1981 SR250. Have recently required the bike and the exhaust is rotten to the core and am finding it difficult to find a repacement. Thanks, Lynn

So I was adjusting the points on my xs400, and discovered to my dismay that one of the screws (the one for adjusting the right point, if it matters to anyone) seems to be at least partially stripped - still some resistance as I turn it, but it just keeps turning and turning without quite cinching down. As it's the first time I've been at these screws on this bike, I'm cursing the PO a bit, and looking at my options - do I replace the whole piece that the points assembly screws into, or see if I can come up with some way to restore the threads. I'm leery of drilling out the hole and just tapping it to the next size bigger screw, it's all a little too close to the things…

Hi all! I just got a 1970 CT1 175cc. It's my first bike, and the first bike I've ever worked on, so I'm feeling a bit in over my head. Anyway, I need a new carburetor and I'm having trouble finding a stock carb. Could I get a carburetor from any other 175cc yamaha 2-stroke and use that? Would a new mikuni round slide work? I'm not sure what size to get. I don't know if this matters but the engine is on 5th overbore. Thanks! I doubt this will be my last posting looking for help with this bike

The existing seal reads S7 14 - 27 - 6 HS. The seal seems to be the original. It has the right specs, but has been inserted in the wrong way. If installed the right way one cannot read the specs. The nearest replacement that I could find is TC 14 - 26 - 7 and looks like having two lips. The head gets oil when running. But the filter cavity has no oil after a few days not running! Is that normal? What to do? Replace with the wrong new one or should I just pry out the old one and turn it around? The lip seems to be undamaged but might be worn. The rubber casing has some damage from priying out before. How to fill up the missing 1 mm on the outside diameter at…
